Mitchell Football picks up #5 seed, at #4 Yankton in the Quarterfinals

The Mitchell Kernels jumped from the #7 seed to the #5 seed in the 11AA Playoffs with an overtime win last night at Huron, along with loses by Aberdeen Central and Watertown.

A goal line tackle on Huron RB Jayden Beck stopped the Tigers 2-point conversion attempt at the end of OT to secure the win for Mitchell, 21-20.

The Kernels received the ball first in OT, scoring on a 4th and Goal from the 5 on a Josh Grosdidier run. Grosdidier had career-highs with 39 carries, 245 rushing yards and scoring all three Mitchell touchdowns.

Huron would quickly respond with Beck scoring from 1 yard out just two plays later to get within one. The Tigers decided to go for the win with a 2-point conversation, but ultimately fell just inches short. Huron ends the season with a 2-7 record and will not qualify for the 11AA Playoffs.

Mitchell got some help last night with Yankton winning at Watertown 20-13, and SF Roosevelt winning at Aberdeen Central 41-14 to drop both the Arrows and Golden Eagles down a spot for playoff seeding.

#5 Mitchell (3-6) will be at #5 Yankton (5-4) next Thursday night, October 28. Yankton defeated Mitchell earlier in the season, 45-0, on October 1st in Mitchell.
