
HURON — The Mitchell Kernels turned in a strong, balanced performance to win the team championship at the Huron Invitational gymnastics meet Friday, finishing with a meet-best score of 146.25.
Sioux Falls Lincoln placed second with a 144.35, followed by Watertown in third at 141.30. Brookings (139.40) and Estelline/Hendricks (139.35) rounded out the top five in a competitive 10-team field.
Mitchell’s depth was on full display throughout the meet, highlighted by Kyanna Gropper’s all-around victory. Gropper posted a winning score of 38.45 to lead the Kernels individually. She placed first in vault (9.55), bars (9.6) and floor (9.8).
Abby Hohn took home a second place finish in vault (9.35), while Olivia Prunty (2nd at 9.5) and Abby Jo Helleloid (3rd at 9.4) had top three finishes in bars
Lauryn Gohl of Sioux Falls Lincoln finished second in the all-around with a 37.45, while Estelline/Hendricks’ Maggie Hausman placed third at 36.45. Baya Carlson of Sioux Falls Jefferson and Watertown’s Macy Olsen tied for fourth with scores of 36.30.
Watertown had one of the deepest individual showings, placing multiple gymnasts in the top 10 of the all-around, including Olsen, Shauna Evenson (36.15) and Ashlynn Andrews (33.85).
Host Huron finished eighth with a score of 121.25. Sioux Falls Washington placed ninth, followed by Sioux Falls Jefferson in 10th.
