After finishing in second place two years in a row, Mitchell girls golf won its first ever Class AA state championship in Pierre on Tuesday with a +40 (616), while Allison Meyerink took home second individually with a two day total of +1 (145).
The Kernels had a seven shot lead over Aberdeen Central after Monday’s first round and held on to win the team title by three shots over the Golden Eagles. One day two, Mitchell was +19 (307), one shot shy of tying the school record set exactly seven days prior at the same Hillsview Golf Course in Pierre.
Meyerink was +3 (75) on the day and finished tied for first with Bryn Huber of Huron with a two day total of +1 (145). Huber would win the state championship with a birdie on the first playoff hole.
Quinn Dannenbring led the Kernels on Tuesday with an even par-72, ending her round with five birdies and five bogeys. Dannenbring finished in fourth place at +5 over the two days, just four shots back of the leaders.
Maddie Childs rebounded from an 83 on Monday to shoot +3 (75) on Tuesday to finish tied for 13th.
