MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell baseball team stayed perfect on the season, going 3-0 at the Border Battle tournament in Sioux Falls over the weekend to improve to 5-0 overall. Mitchell opened with a 4-3 walk-off win over Fargo Shanley, then beat West Fargo Sheyenne 5-2, and closed the event with a 13-1 five-inning victory over Grand Forks Central. Mitchell travels to face O’Gorman on Tuesday in Sioux Falls.

— Mitchell senior Alexier Padilla won the 400 meters in 50.10 seconds on Friday at the Huron Invitational, leading the field by more than two seconds. He also led Mitchell’s 4×400 relay team to a first-place finish in 3:31.42. Logan Bessler placed second in both the shot put and discus, and Gage Schmidt finished third in the javelin. On the girls side, Mitchell relay teams had runner-up performances in both the 4×100 and 4×800. Mitchell’s next meet is Tuesday at the Yankton Triangular.

— Mitchell Kernels boys tennis team picked up a pair of road dual wins Friday, defeating Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens at Kuehn Park in Sioux Falls to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Kernels defeated Central 8-1 and Stevens 5-4. Mitchell returns home Tuesday to host Brookings and Aberdeen Roncalli in a triangular at Hitchcock Park.

— Mitchell Kernels softball is scheduled to open the season on Monday at Sioux Falls Lincoln at 6 pm. The Kernels have had their first three games of the season postponed due to weather vs. Watertown, Pierre and Aberdeen Central.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan softball extended its winning streak to 12 games on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Doane, winning 3-1 and 8-0 to remain alone in first place in the GPAC. The Tigers improved to 30-11 overall and 13-1 in league play, maintaining a two-game lead over Dordt in the league standings. In Game one, Dakota Wesleyan had 11 hits and had a complete-game performance from Alison Ernsberger, who allowed just one run while striking out seven. In game two, the Tigers broke things open with a seven-run second inning. DWU will return home Friday to host Mount Marty for a conference doubleheader.

— Dakota Wesleyan Baseball split a four-game GPAC series with Dordt with the Tigers winning both games on Friday 13-11 and 20-7. Dordt took both games on Saturday 7-6 and 3-0. The Tigers will host Concordia on Friday for a doubleheader at 2 pm at Drake Field.

— Taliyah Hayes won both the long jump and triple jump as Dakota Wesleyan Track & Field competed at the Sioux City Relays on Saturday. DWU will be back in action at the Bauer Open on Friday.

— Dakota Wesleyan golf will host the Dakota Wesleyan Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course starting on Sunday in Mitchell.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State softball picked up a pair of wins over Power Four conference opponents over the weekend in Iowa City. On Saturday, the Jackrabbits shut out Georgia Tech 6-0 and then defeated Iowa 3-2 in extra innings. On Sunday, SDSU lost 10-1 to Georgia Tech before rebounding with a 7-4 win over Iowa to finish the weekend. The Jacks jump back into Summit League play at Omaha on Friday to begin a three-game series.

— South Dakota State baseball earned a Summit League series win over St. Thomas, taking two of three games over the weekend road. The Jackrabbits opened with a 7-2 win on Friday, then clinched the series Saturday with a 13-2 run-rule victory. SDSU hosts Midland on Tuesday at 2 pm in Brookings.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD softball lost all three games over the weekend to North Dakota State by a combined score of 35-8. The Coyotes will be at Iowa State on Tuesday at 4 pm.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
— Nebraska volleyball swept Iowa State 4-0 Saturday at the Sanford Pentagon, winning 25-17, 25-16, 25-16, 26-24 in front of 3,376 fans. Nebraska hit .360 for the match. Bergen Reilly, playing in her hometown, combined with Campbell Flynn to lead the offense with 35 total assists.

HIGH SCHOOL
— The spring high school golf season opened Friday at Lakeview Golf Course with the Class B Classic tournament, where Miller picked up both individual and team honors. In the girls division, Miller’s Jayce Pugh captured medalist honors with a 5-over-par 77.  Miller also claimed the girls team title with a 255, edging Dell Rapids St. Mary by two strokes. On the boys side, Miller’s Derek Brueggeman earned individual medalist honors with an even-par 72.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Tristan Gray hit a three-run home run, while Kody Clemens added a solo shot as the Minnesota Twins beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-2. Taj Bradley allowed one run and five hits in five innings to win his third straight start as the Twins took two of three from Toronto. Minnesota has won six of seven. The Twins host the Boston Red Sox on Monday at 6:40 pm.

GOLF
— Rory McIlroy has gone back-to-back at The Masters, joining exclusive company with Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods as the only repeat champions at Augusta National. McIlroy took control in Sunday’s final round with a birdie at the par-3 12th. He followed that with a 350-yard drive on the 13th that set up another birdie. He closed with a 1-under 71 to finish at 12-unde, winning by one shot over Scottie Scheffler.

MLB
— Phil Garner, a three-time All-Star infielder who managed the Houston Astros to their first World Series appearance, has died at age 76 after a more than two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Garner played 16 seasons in the majors with Oakland, Pittsburgh, Houston, the Dodgers, and San Francisco. He was a key contributor to the Pirates’ 1979 World Series championship and earned All-Star selections in 1976, 1980, and 1981. Garner later became a manager, spending 15 seasons in the dugout and finishing with 985 wins. His most notable run came with the Astros, whom he led to their first World Series appearance in 2005.

— Drew Rasmussen allowed one hit in six scoreless innings as the Tampa Bay Rays completed their first three-game sweep of the Yankees since 2021, holding on to beat New York 5-4.

— Shohei Ohtani connected off Jacob deGrom for his second straight leadoff home run, but the Texas Rangers rallied to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 and avoid a three-game sweep. Evan Carter hit a tying home run off Roki Sasaki and Brandon Nimmo drove in two runs for the Rangers.

— Tanner Murray hit his first major league home run as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-5 after the first pitch was pushed back 3 hours because of rain. Chicago tied a team record by using nine pitchers in a nine-inning game.

— Jorge Mateo had four hits and Dominic Smith had a two-run homer as Chris Sale cruised to his third win of the season as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Cleveland Guardians 13-1.

— Nick Kurtz hit his first home run this season, sending the Athletics to a 1-0 victory and a three-game sweep of the New York Mets.

— Tarik Skubal outpitched Sandy Alcántara in a matchup of Cy Young Award winners, while Dillon Dingler, Kevin McGonigle and Kerry Carpenter homered as the Detroit Tigers earned a three-game sweep with an 8-2 win over the Miami Marlins.

— José Soriano struck out 10 over seven shutout innings to become the major leagues’ first four-game winner as Los Angeles Angels beat the Reds 9-6. Soriano allowed two hits and three walks, lowering his big league-best ERA to 0.33.

NBA
— The Minnesota Timberwolves rested almost all their regulars for the playoffs during a 132-126 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

— Nikola Jokic scored 23 points in the first half of his 65th game to become NBA award eligible as the Denver Nuggets beat the San Antonio Spurs 128-118 to secure the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.

— Bennedict Mathurin had 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists off the bench as the Los Angeles Clippers defeated the Golden State Warriors 115-110 to set up a rematch in the play-in tournament. The Clippers claimed the No. 9 seed and will host the 10th-seeded Warriors on Wednesday after Portland beat Sacramento 122-110 to claim the eighth seed.

— LeBron James had 18 points, six assists and four rebounds in the first half as the Los Angeles Lakers picked up a 131-107 win over the Utah Jazz.

— Baylor Scheierman scored a career-high 30 points as the Boston Celtics’ reserves defeated Orlando 113-108, sending the Magic into a road play-in tournament game.

— LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller and Coby White each scored 19 points as the Charlotte Hornets beat the New York Knicks 110-96 to clinch the No. 9 seed in the Eastern Conference.

— Paul Reed finished with 26 points on 11-of-11 shooting leading the Eastern Conference’s top seeded Detroit Pistons past the Indiana Pacers 133-121. Detroit finishes the regular season with a 60-22 record.

— RJ Barrett scored 26 points, while Scottie Barnes had 18 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists for his ninth career triple-double as the Toronto Raptors clinched their first playoff berth in four seasons by beating the Brooklyn Nets 136-101. Toronto will be the fifth seed in the East with a first-round matchup with fourth-seeded Cleveland.

— Ryan Nembhard broke Dallas coach Jason Kidd’s team rookie record with 23 assists as the Mavericks beat the Chicago Bulls 149-128.
