MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell baseball won two of three games over the weekend in Sioux Falls as part of the Border Battle Classic. On Friday, Mitchell lost to Grand Forks 3-2. On Saturday, Mitchell picked up a pair of wins defeating Fargo Shanley 7-2 and West Fargo 12-7. Against West Fargo, Mitchell scored 10 runs in the fifth inning after trailing 6-2. Mitchell is back in Sioux Falls on Tuesday when they take on Jefferson at 6 pm at the Sanford Sports Complex.

— Mitchell boys tennis defeated Rapid City Central on Friday 8-1 at Hitchcock Park. The Kernels will be in Brookings on Tuesday for a triangular vs. the Bobcats and Aberdeen Roncalli at 11 am.

— Mitchell softball, 2-2 on the season, will host Watertown on Monday at 5:30 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels track and field will host Yankton and Brandon Valley for a triangular on Tuesday in Mitchell at 4 pm on Joe Quintal Field. The Kernels will then host over a dozen schools for the Corn Palace Relays on Thursday afternoon at 2 pm.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan softball split a doubleheader on Saturday vs. No. 7 Northwestern, losing the first game 5-4 before winning game two 6-4. The Tigers improved to 29-12 on the season and 10-6 in the GPAC. DWU hosts Doane on Thursday for a 3 pm doubleheader with just six games left in the regular season.

— Dakota Wesleyan baseball went 1-3 at home over the weekend splitting a Saturday doubleheader vs. Northwestern, winning game one 4-2 and losing game two 10-3. The Tigers lost both games on Sunday to Morningside 11-1 and 12-8. DWU falls to 12-25 on the season and 11-9 in the GPAC. They will be at Dakota State on Tuesday for a single game at 5 pm before going to Briar Cliff for a doubleheader on Thursday.

— Dakota Wesleyan women’s golf will compete at the Doane Invite in Lincoln, Nebraska, starting on Monday.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State softball lost two of three games over the weekend at St. Thomas. The Jacks split a doubleheader on Saturday losing game one 6-0 before winning game two 8-5. St. Thomas won on Sunday 6-2. SDSU falls into a second-place tie with St. Thomas at 6-3 in the Summit League. The Jacks host North Dakota State for three games this weekend starting with a doubleheader on Friday at 2 pm.

— South Dakota State baseball won two of three at home over the weekend vs. Omaha. The Jacks won on Friday 7-5 and again on Saturday 13-3 in eight innings. Omaha won the series finale on Sunday 19-5 in seven innings. SDSU will be at Minnesota on Wednesday at 6 pm. The Gophers defeated the Jacks on April 8, 4-3.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD softball swept a doubleheader on Sunday vs. Morningside with a pair of shutouts winning 6-0 and 8-0. The Coyotes are back in Summit League play this weekend with three games at Omaha starting with a doubleheader on Friday at Noon.

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF
— Hanson boys golf won the Class B Classic at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell on Friday, finishing six shots ahead of Wall and Sully Buttes with a team score of 227. Ben Wilber finished fourth overall with a +3 (74). Will Jarding shot +4 (75) to place fifth.

GOLF
— Rory McIlroy turned another major collapse into his first Masters victory, hitting a wedge into 3 feet for birdie in a sudden-death playoff Sunday to defeat Justin Rose and take his place in golf history as the sixth player to claim the career Grand Slam. McIlroy shot a final round 73 after a double-bogey on the first and 13th hold, while having a bogey on the 18th hole. Rose shot a 66 in his final round, including six birdies over his final eight holes.

MLB
— Chicago Cubs ace Justin Steele will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his left elbow, It was unclear whether Steele, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017, will need another full ligament-replacement procedure or a Tommy John revision with an internal brace. The 29-year-old left-hander will be sidelined until 2026.

— Edouard Julien homered off former Auburn teammate Casey Mize and Byron Buxton also went deep as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 5-1. Simeon Woods Richardson allowed one run and five hits with five strikeouts over five innings. The Twins host the New York Mets for the start of a three-game series on Monday at 6:40 pm. The Twins unveiled a bronze statue of Hall of Fame catcher Joe Mauer at Target Field before Sunday’s game. Mauer spoke as the statue was unveiled outside a gate beyond right field. He joined Rod Carew, Harmon Killebrew, Kirby Puckett, Tony Oliva, Kent Hrbek, manager Tom Kelly and owners Carl and Eloise Pohlad with a statue outside the ballpark.

— Garrett Crochet struck out 11 in 7 1/3 innings in his first start against his former team as the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1. Crochet lost his bid for a no-hitter when Chase Meidroth hit a one-out single in the eighth.

— The Cubs Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his first two home runs of the season, including a go-ahead solo shot in the seventh inning, while Michael Busch homered against his former team again as Chicago beat the Dodgers 4-2. L.A. is 3-6 since their 8-0 start.

— The Giants Jung Hoo Lee homered in consecutive at-bats off Carlos Rodón for his first career multi-homer game as the San Francisco Giants rallied from a three-run deficit to beat the New York Yankees 5-4. San Francisco has won nine of 12 games.

— Cole Ragans managed to pitch through a left hamstring cramp for 7 2/3 innings leading the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Guardians 4-2 . Ragans struck out 10 and walked none while allowing one earned run and four hits.

— Michael King threw a two-hitter for his first career complete game as the San Diego Padres shut out the Colorado Rockies for the third straight game, winning 6-0 on Sunday. It was the first time the Padres had shut out an opponent in a series of at least three games. Colorado dropped to a major league-worst 3-12, including a 1-8 record on the road.

— Kodai Senga became the first Mets pitcher to threw seven innings this year as New York beat the Athletics 8-0 Senga allowed four hits, throwing a season-high 79 pitches and lowering his ERA to 1.06.

— Isaac Paredes hit a three-run homer to cap Houston’s five-run second inning, while Hayden Wesneski struck out a career-high 10 as the Astros beat the Angels 7-3.

— Cal Raleigh homered for a third straight game to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 3-1 win and a sweep of the Texas Rangers. Raleigh hit a two-run shot out to right field off Texas starter Nathan Eovaldi in the first inning. The Mariners never trailed in their fourth straight victory.

— Myles Straw drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 7-6 over the Baltimore Orioles.

— Junior Caminero hit a three-run homer as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Atlanta Braves 8–3. Atlanta finished with four hits while dropping to 1-9 on the road this season.

— Matthew Liberatore pitched six shutout innings, while Willson Contreras and Jordan Walker homered as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-0.

— Josh Naylor hit a go-ahead single in the seventh as the Arizona Diamondbacks overcame a two-run, first-inning deficit to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2.

NBA
— Anthony Edwards had 18 of his 43 points in the third quarter to help the Minnesota Timberwolves pull away from the Utah Jazz for a 116-105 victory to clinch the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Rudy Gobert had 19 points and 18 rebounds and Donte DiVincenzo added 16 points/

— James Harden hit consecutive 3-pointers in overtime, a pair of free throws and scored on Jimmy Butler’s goaltending to finish with 39 points and 10 assists as the Clippers secured the fifth seed in the Western Conference playoffs by beating the Golden State Warriors 124-119. Steph Curry had 26 points for Golden State.

— Michael Porter Jr. scored 19 points, while Aaron Gordon and Nikola Jokic added 18 each as the Denver Nuggets clinched the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference with a 126-111 win over the Houston Rockets. The victory gives the Nuggets homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs and puts them in the postseason for a seventh straight season.

— The Oklahoma City Thunder wrapped up the best regular season in franchise history with a 115-100 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. The Thunder finished the regular season with a 68-14 record.

— Pat Connaughton had a career-high 43 points and a season-high 11 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Detroit Pistons 140-133 in overtime to close the regular season on an eight-game winning streak. Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, Detroit’s Cade Cunningham and several other regulars didn’t play with both teams already locked into their playoff positions.

— The Portland Trail Blazers ended their season with a 109-81 win over the playoff-bound Lakers, playing without Luka Doncic and LeBron James. The Lakers had already locked up the third seed in the Western Conference with a 140-109 win over Houston on Friday.

— Kevin Huerter hit five 3-pointers and scored 18 points as the Chicago Bulls defeated the 76ers 122-102. The Bulls are the No. 9 seed in the Eastern Conference for the second straight season and will make their third straight appearance in the play-in tournament.
