MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell boys tennis placed third at the Rapid City Invitational over the weekend, finishing with 117.5 points. Brandon Valley won the team title, followed by Rapid City Stevens. Mitchell’s Cooper Star took second place in Flight 3 singles, while Simon Wiese and Patrick Morgan each finished as runners-up in Flights 5 and 6. In doubles competition, Asher Dannenbring and Dawson Adams led the way by winning the Flight 2 championship.
— Mitchell baseball hosts Sioux Falls Lincoln on Tuesday for a 5 pm doubleheader at Drake Field. Mitchell is coming off an 11-6 loss vs. Rapid City Stevens on Friday night, after Stevens scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning. The KORN pregame show starts at 4:45 pm.
— Mitchell girls golf returns to the course on Tuesday at the Pierre Invitational at 10 am.
— Mitchell softball returns to action on Tuesday on the road at Yankton at 5:30 pm.
— Mitchell track and field hosts a triangular vs. Huron and Aberdeen Central on Thursday at 4 pm at Joe Quintal Field.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan baseball ended the regular season by sweeping Mt. Marty on Saturday in Yankton, winning 8-5 and 6-5. The Tigers won a four-way tiebreaker with Mt. Marty, Hastings and Dordt to claim the No. 6 seed for this week’s GPAC Tournament. DWU will face No. 3 seed Morningside on Wednesday at 3 pm, hosted by Concordia in Seward, Nebraska.
— Dakota Wesleyan softball split a doubleheader at Morningside on Saturday, winning game one 12-6 before losing game two 7-3. The Tigers are tied with Morningside for the No. 3 seed in this week’s GPAC tournament with a 17-5 conference record, with the tiebreaker yet to be announced. DWU will be on the road for the GPAC Tournament that starts on Wednesday.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State baseball split a pair of games over the weekend vs. Northern Colorado before Sunday’s series finale was cancelled due to weather. On Friday, the Jacks won 7-6 in 11 innings, before Northern Colorado won on Saturday 19-2 in seven innings. SDSU will host Buena Vista on Tuesday at 3 pm, followed by Minnesota-Morris on Wednesday.
— South Dakota State’s softball Senior Day and home finale against St. Thomas was canceled Saturday due to rain. The game began in Brookings but was halted during the first inning after multiple delays and ultimately ruled a no contest. The matchup will not be rescheduled. The Jackrabbits will close the regular season on the road with a three-game series at North Dakota State beginning Thursday.
— South Dakota State’s women’s sprint medley relay team set a school record on Saturday at the Drake Relays in Des Moines. The team of Erika Kuntz, Grace Erick, Story Rasby and Reese Luze posted a time of 5 minutes, 56.12 seconds to finish sixth.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— Madison Evans delivered a career-best performance with 12 strikeouts as USD softball beat Kansas City 5–3 on Sunday to win the weekend series. The Coyotes scored four unanswered runs after falling behind early and added insurance in the seventh. The win moves South Dakota into fourth place in the Summit League with one weekend left in the regular season.
— USD’s track and field teams turned in several strong performances Saturday at the Drake Relays, highlighted by a school record in the women’s distance medley relay. The team of Jade Ecoffey, Berkeley Engelland, Ellie Thomas and Geneva Timmerman set the new mark at 11 minutes, 33.63 seconds. On the men’s side, South Dakota won the university division 4×400 relay in 3:11.93, the program’s fastest time in more than two decades and fifth-best in school history.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Yandy Diaz homered as part of a four-run third inning as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Minnesota Twins 4-2 to complete a three-game series sweep. Tampa Bay has won four straight and is five games above .500. The Twins’ slide continued with their fifth consecutive loss and ninth defeat in their last 10 games. Minnesota returns home to begin a three-game series vs. Seattle on Monday at 6:40 pm.
NBA
— Amen Thompson scored 23 points as the Houston Rockets avoided elimination with a 115-96 rout of the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of the Western Conference playoff series. Game 5 is Wednesday night in Los Angeles. The Rockets got their first win in the series after falling into an 0-3 hole despite missing Kevin Durant, who sat out a second straight game with a sprained left ankle after missing Game 1 with a bruised right knee.
— Payton Pritchard made six of Boston’s 24 3-pointers and scored 32 points, while Jayson Tatum had 30 points and 11 assists to help the Boston Celtics spoil Joel Embiid’s return from an appendectomy and beat the Philadelphia 76ers 128-96 for a 3-1 lead in their first-round playoff series. Game 5 is Tuesday night in Boston. Embiid scored 26 points in 34 minutes just 17 days after having an appendectomy.
— Victor Wembanyama returned from concussion protocol with a dominant performance as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Portland Trail Blazers 114–93 to take a 3–1 lead in their first-round series. Wembanyama finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocks after being cleared just before tipoff. De’Aaron Fox led the Spurs with 28 points as San Antonio overcame a 17-point first-half deficit. San Antonio now heads home for Game 5 on Tuesday with a chance to close out the series.
— The Toronto Raptors evened their first-round playoff series at two games apiece with a 93–89 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram led the way with 23 points each, with Barnes also hitting the go-ahead free throws in the final minute. RJ Barrett added 18 points as Toronto overcame a rough shooting night from beyond the arc, hitting just 4 of 30 three-pointers. Cleveland was led by Donovan Mitchell with 20 points and James Harden with 19. The series now shifts back to Cleveland for Game 5 on Wednesday.
— Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards is expected to miss multiple weeks after suffering a bone bruise and hyperextended left knee in Game 4 of the first-round series against Denver. Team doctors confirmed the knee is structurally intact, but the injury occurred when Edwards landed awkwardly while contesting a shot in Saturday’s 112–96 win that gave Minnesota a 3–1 series lead. The Timberwolves also lost guard Donte DiVincenzo in the same game to a torn Achilles tendon, ending his season and likely impacting next year as well.
— Denver’s Nikola Jokic was fined $50,000 and Minnesota’s Julius Randle was fined $35,000 for their roles in an altercation near the end of Game 4 of the teams’ playoff series on Saturday. Both will be eligible to play when the series resumes Monday with Game 5 in Denver. The incident was sparked when Minnesota’s Jaden McDaniels took an uncontested layup with 2.1 seconds left as the Timberwolves were already leading by 14.

— Carson Hocevar earned his first NASCAR Cup Series victory at Talladega Superspeedway, making a last-lap pass to edge Chris Buescher. The 23-year-old became a first-time winner in his 91st start after a massive multi-car crash eliminated much of the field. The win capped a chaotic race marked by aggressive drafting and a 26-car wreck involving several top contenders.
GOLF
— Nelly Korda dominated the Chevron Championship in Houston to win her third major title and return to No. 1 in the world rankings. She never let anyone get closer than four shots the entire weekend, closing with a five-shot victory at 18-under par for her 17th LPGA win.
MLB
— Chase Dollander held the Mets to five hits over seven innings in his first start this year as the Colorado Rockies beat New York 3-0 in a doubleheader nightcap to complete a three-game sweep that sent the Mets to their 15th loss in 17 games. Colorado won Sunday’s opener 3-1.
— Chris Sale shut down the Phillies for the second time in nine days and won his 150th career game as the Atlanta Braves beat Philadelphia 6-2. Sale threw six shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a season-high nine.
— Justin Wrobleski tossed six scoreless innings to become the first Dodgers pitcher since 2009 to win his first four starts as L.A. defeated the Chicago Cubs 6-0. Shohei Ohtani hit an opposite-field home run in the seventh, going 3 for 4 with a walk and two runs scored.
— Willson Contreras hit his sixth home run of the season and second in as many games as the Boston Red Sox responded to the firing of manager Alex Cora on Saturday with a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Boston parted with Cora and five assistants following a 10-17 start to the season.
— Milwaukee’s Kyle Harrison had a career-high 12 strikeouts and allowed just one hit and one walk in six shutout innings as the Brewers avoided a sweep by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0.
— Houston’s Spencer Arrighetti allowed one run over seven innings, while Christian Walker homered and drove home a season-high four runs as the Houston Astros beat the Yankees 7-4 to snap New York’s eight-game winning streak.
— Seattle’s Rob Refsnyder successfully challenged a third strike, and then hit a go-ahead solo home run in the ninth inning to lift the Mariners to a 3-2 win against the St. Louis Cardinals.
— Pinch hitter Hao-Yu Lee hit his first MLB home run and Spencer Torkelson homered for the fifth straight game as the Detroit Tigers avoided a series sweep with an 8-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
— Jesús Sánchez hit a two-run home run to take the lead, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-2.
— Ildemaro Vargas had a home run and four RBI’s, while Tim Tawa hit a grand-slam in six-run seventh inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to defeat the San Diego Padres 12-7 to split the two-game series played in Mexico City.
— Carlos Cortes had a two-run triple in the first inning, while reliever Justin Sterner escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam to preserve a one-run lead in the sixth as the Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 2-1.
— The Giants Landen Roupp held Miami to two hits in 7 2/3 innings, while Casey Schmitt hit a go-ahead home run for the second straight game as San Francisco beat the Marlins 6-3. The Giants have won three consecutive series and seven of their past 10 games.
