MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell baseball outscored Sturgis 22-0 in a home doubleheader at Drake Field on Friday night to improve to 9-6 on the season. Mason Herman threw a shutout in game one, allowing only four hits and no walks with six strikeouts on 90 pitches. Mitchell scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, added four more in the fourth and made it 7-0 with another run in the fifth. Mitchell made quick work of Sturgis in game two, winning 15-0 in three innings. Mitchell scored eight times in the second inning and six more in the third to invoke the 15-run rule. Mitchell hosts O’Gorman for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 5 pm. The pregame show starts at 4:45 pm on KORN News Radio FM 101.3/AM 1490 and KORNRadio.com.

— Mitchell track and field will host O’Gorman and Yankton on Tuesday at 4 pm at Joe Quintal Field. On Friday, Mitchell had four top-five finishes at the Legion Relay in Pierre and also four top-five finishes at the Greenway Relays in Mt. Vernon.

— Mitchell Kernels softball, 4-4 on the season, will be at Brookings on Monday at 4 pm, followed by a home game vs. Yankton on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels girls golf will be at the Pierre Invite at Hillsview Golf Course on Tuesday at 10 am.


DAKOTA WESLEYAN

— Dakota Wesleyan softball split a home doubleheader on Saturday vs. Morningside, as the Tigers won game one 4-0, then lost game two 3-1. DWU ends the regular season with a 33-14 overall record, 14-8 in the GPAC. The Tigers will be the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament and face No. 5 seed Concordia on Wednesday at 2 pm in Orange City, Iowa.

— Dakota Wesleyan baseball ended the regular season with four home losses to Concordia on Friday and Saturday, losing the games by a combined score of 63-16. The Tigers have lost 13 games in a row as they will be the No. 8 seed for the GPAC baseball tournament that starts on Wednesday. The double elimination format sees DWU play No. 1 seed Concordia at 6 pm.


SOUTH DAKOTA STATE

— South Dakota State softball lost two out of three games vs. Summit League leading Omaha, with the Jackrabbits winning game one of the Saturday doubleheader 7-6, before losing game two 9-8. SDSU sits in third place in the Summit League with a 10-5 conference record. The Jacks wrap up the regular season this weekend with a three-game series at North Dakota starting on Friday with a 2 pm doubleheader.

— South Dakota State baseball took three out of four games over the weekend from North Dakota State, winning on Sunday 9-6. The Jackrabbits host Northern Colorado for a three-game series starting on Friday at 3 pm.


SOUTH DAKOTA

— USD softball won at North Dakota State on Sunday 5-2 to avoid a three-game sweep vs. the Bison. The Coyotes end the regular season with three home games vs. Kansas City starting on Friday.

— Jaden McDaniels converted a three-point play with 39 seconds left for the lead and stole the ensuing inbounds pass from LeBron James, leading a rally by the Minnesota Timberwolves for a 116-113 win over the Los Angeles Lakers that put them up 3-1 in their first-round series on Sunday. Anthony Edwards had 43 points to lead Minnesota and drew a foul on James during a drive to the lane with 10 seconds left and hit both free throws. Julius Randle added 25 points and McDaniels had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who trailed by 12 points late in the third quarter.

— New York’s Karl-Anthony Towns made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 46 seconds left and finished with 27 points, while Jalen Brunson had 32 points and 11 assists as the Knicks beat the Detroit Pistons 94-93 on Sunday to take a 3-1 lead in their first-round playoff series. The Pistons Tim Hardaway Jr. shot a 3-pointer just before the buzzer and drew some contact from New York’s Josh Hart that wasn’t called a foul at the end of the game. David Guthrie, the crew chief for the game, said afterward that the officials made a mistake. Had the foul been called, Hardaway would have gone to the foul line for three free throws that could have given Detroit the lead.

— Jayson Tatum had 37 points and 14 rebounds, while Jaylen Brown added 21 points and 11 rebounds as the Boston Celtics took a 3-1 series lead with a 107-98 win over the Orlando Magic.

— Myles Turner scored 23 points as the Pacers shot 60% on Sunday night while winning 129-103 over the Bucks, who lost Damian Lillard to a lower left leg injury midway through the first quarter. The preliminary examination of Lillard indicated a possible Achilles tendon injury.

— Joe Ryan struck out a season-high 11 in seven shutout innings as the Minnesota Twins beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-0 for their first three-game win streak since August. Ryan allowed four hits and a walk. Ty France had an RBI double and Ryan Jeffers doubled in two more runs, all in the sixth inning. The Twins are 12-16 on the season and have won five of their past six games. They start a three-game series at Cleveland tonight with first pitch at 5:10 pm.

— Yordan Alvarez’s long home run backed a solid start by Hunter Brown as the Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3. Alvarez snapped Houston’s 26-inning scoreless streak with a three-run homer and a 3-0 Astros lead in the third inning. Brown allowed one run on seven hits with nine strikeouts over six innings. His 28-inning shutout streak ended in the fifth inning on a two-out single.

— Andy Pages hit a home run, drove in a career-high four runs and tied a career best with four hits as the Dodgers defeated the Pirates 9-2. L.A. overcame the departure of right-hander Tyler Glasnow, who left after one inning with right shoulder discomfort.

— Austin Wells capped a six-run third inning with a three-run double off as the Yankees routed the Toronto Blue Jays 11-2 in game one of a doubleheader. Aaron Judge broke a sixth-inning tie in the second game with his eighth home run this season as the Yankees swept a doubleheader from the Blue Jays 11-2 and 5-1.

— Alec Bohm hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 3-1. Trea Turner had three hits and two RBIs for Philadelphia, which took two of three in the weekend series.

— Christian Yelich had two hits and two RBIs as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 to avoid a three-game series sweep.

— Tarik Skubal struck out a season-high 11 batters in six innings as the Detroit Tigers finished off a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with a 7-0 victory. Skubal held the Orioles to four hits without a walk.

— Washington’s CJ Abrams scored the winning run on Pete Alonso’s throwing error with one out in the ninth inning as the Nationals rallied from a six-run deficit to defeat the New York Mets 8-7.

— Heliot Ramos circled the bases on an infield single and two Texas errors in the ninth inning as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Rangers 3-2. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, Ramos led off with a soft dribbler to the right of the pitcher’s mound. Rangers reliever Luke Jackson threw the ball wide of first base, and then Jake Burger, after retrieving the ball in foul territory, threw wide of third. The errors allowed Ramos to score the winning run.

— Cal Raleigh tied for the major league lead with his 10th home run as the Seattle Mariners beat the Miami Marlins 7-6.

— Josh Naylor hit a two-run double in the seventh as part of a three-hit day as the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Atlanta Braves 6-4.

— Tampa Bay rookie Chandler Simpson raced home to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and had his first three-hit game for the Rays, who beat the San Diego Padres 4-2 for their first sweep of the season.

— Luis Urías hit a two-run homer with one out in the 10th inning help the Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2.
