Freeman 19, Burke 4 (5 innings) – Baily Sage with five hits and six RBI’s. Rocky Ammann and Jackson Fiegen added four hits, while Avery Mellman had a HR.
Dell Rapids Mudcats 7, Winner/Colome 2 – Grant Olson was 2-for-4 with a solo HR, while Jake Goble had a two-run HR. Ty Hoglund finished 4-for-5.
SECOND ROUND – SUNDAY
Alexandria 6, Parkston Mudcats 5 – Bradley Dean with the game winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Jerrod Zens from second after Alexandria trailed 5-0 in the sixth inning. The Angels would get a three-run HR from Ben Wilber and a two-run shot from Pierce Smith in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at five. Jeff Harris was 3-for-3 with two walks for Parkston. The Mudcats have now lost 27 straight games to Alexandria dating back to the 2015 state championship game.

MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis starts its season on Tuesday when they travel to Huron to face St. Thomas More at Noon, followed by Aberdeen Roncalli at 2 pm. The Kernels will head to Sioux Falls later in the week to compete in the Sioux Falls Christian Invite on Thursday and Friday.
— Mitchell Kernels soccer starts its season on Friday when they travel to Harrisburg. The girls varsity match is at 4 pm, followed by the boys at 6 pm. The Kernels host Tea Area in their home opener on Saturday with the girls match at 11 am, followed by the boys at 1 pm at Joe Quintal Field.

— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer will host Gillette Community College in an exhibition match on Monday at 3 pm at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer defeated Iowa Lakes Community College on Friday 11-0 in their final exhibition match before starting the 2025 regular season this Thursday at Missouri

— USD women’s soccer start the regular season on Thursday, August 14 vs. Northern Iowa.
LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES
— The Sioux Falls Little League team is heading to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, representing South Dakota after a 6-0 win over North Dakota on Friday. This marks their fourth trip to the tournament. Sioux Falls will face Pennsylvania in their first game on Wednesday.
HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
— Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal announced her verbal commitment to play for the Nebraska Cornhuskers over the weekend. Koupal, a 6-foot-3 guard/forward, is ranked No. 9 nationally in the Class of 2026 and chose Nebraska over Duke, Kansas, Michigan State, and TCU. She averaged 22 points, 10 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.5 block as a junior this past season, being named the South Dakota Gatorade Player of the Year.
GOLF
— Jeremy Nielson and Josh Hartman won the 55th annual Corn Palac Invitational two-man golf tournament at Wild Oak Golf Course on Saturday. The duo finished with 21 points for the tournament under the scoring system, one point better than second place Justice Morrison and Cade Carpenter.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Luke Keaschall hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning, while 31-year-old rookie Ryan Fitzgerald homered for his first career hit, as the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3. With two outs, Keaschall hit a fastball from Royals closer Carlos Estévez to the first row of seats in right-centerfield for Minnesota’s ninth walk-off win of the season. It was the third hit of the day for Keaschall, who has reached base in 12 straight games to start his career. The Twins start a three-game series in New York tonight vs. the Yankees. Zebby Mathews gets the start with first pitch at 6:05 pm on MLB Network.
MLB
— Jen Pawol became the first female umpire to work behind the plate in a major league game on Sunday between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves. Pawol made history in Saturday’s doubleheader as the first female umpire to work a regular-season game in the majors. She moved behind the plate for the Braves’ 7-1 win on Sunday.
— San Francisco’s Justin Verlander struck out the side in the first inning against the Washington Nationals to become the 10th pitcher in MLB history to reach 3,500 career strikeouts. The Giants dropped an 8-0 decision to Washington in front of 40,000 fans at Oracle Park. Washington scored four times in the second inning and five overall on 11 hits against Verlander.

— The opening night of the 2025-26 NBA season will feature the Houston Rockets at the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder and the Golden State Warriors at the Los Angeles Lakers. The games will be played on Oct. 21 and will be televised on NBC. Additionally, there will be five games on ABC on Christmas

— Detroit Lions safety Morice Norris was at the team’s training facility with teammates on Sunday, two days after he was taken off the field in an ambulance late in a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. Norris was released from an Atlanta hospital and returned home on Saturday. Norris shared a social media post the day after he was injured, saying he’s OK and thanking people for their support.
GOLF
— Justin Rose produced a stunning rally with four straight birdies to make up a three-shot deficit with five holes to play. He made two birdies in a three-hole playoff to beat U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Rose shot 67 and wound making six birdies on his last eight holes. Tommy Fleetwood remains without a PGA Tour victory after losing a two-shot lead with three holes left. He tied for third with Scottie Scheffler. Rickie Fowler and Bud Cauley were among five players who moved into the top 50 in the FedEx Cup to advance.
NASCAR
— Shane van Gisbergen continued his march into NASCAR history and set a Cup Series rookie record with his fourth victory this season, blowing out the competition again at Watkins Glen International. Van Gisbergen joined 2020 champion Chase Elliott and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon as the only drivers to win four consecutive Cup races on road or street courses. The New Zealand native cruised to a big lead Sunday and led the final 17 laps, beating Christopher Bell by 11 seconds
— Sporting a smile with his left elbow in a black sling draped around his neck, Connor Zilisch was back at Watkins Glen and recounting his scary fall in victory lane a day earlier. Zilisch took a nasty fall while attempting a celebratory perch on his No. 88 Chevrolet after winning Saturday’s Xfinity race at the road course. The 19-year-old Zilisch was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a broken collarbone.
WNBA
— A’ja Wilson become the first player in WNBA history to have a 30 point, 20 rebound double-double as she finished with 32 points on 13-of-25 shooting, to go along with 20-rebounds as the Las Vegas Aces defeated the Connecticut Sun 94-86.
