MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell girls soccer is off to a 3-0 start after a pair of home wins this weekend. The Kernels beat Spearfish 2-1 Friday, then shut out Douglas 8-0 ON Saturday. Emilie Ellis scored four goals in Saturday’s win. Mitchell has outscored opponents 19-1 through three games. The Kernels will be at Brookings on Tuesday at 6 pm
— Mitchell boys soccer improved to 2-1 with a 4-3 win over Douglas on Saturday. Kerim Ical scored on a penalty kick, while Gavin Zilla and Evan Mitchell also scored for the Kernels. Mitchell lost to Spearfish 4-2 on Friday. The Kernels travel to Brookings on Tuesday at 4 pm
— Mitchell girls tennis split two duals Saturday in Sioux Falls, falling to O’Gorman 7-2 before bouncing back to sweep Sioux Falls Roosevelt 9-0. Mitchell improved to 7-2 in duals and will compete at the Rapid City Invitational starting on Thursday at 1 pm.
— Mitchell boys golf competes at the Pierre Invite on Tuesday starting at 10 am at Hillsview Golf Course.
— Mitchell cross country will host the Mitchell Invite on Thursday at Wild Oak Golf Course at 4 pm.
— Mitchell volleyball starts its season on Friday at home vs. Sturgis at 5 pm. The Kernels will compete at the Huron Invite on Saturday with four matches on the schedule.
— Mitchell football starts its season on Friday at home vs. Brookings at 7 pm. The KORN Booth pregame show starts at 6 pm on KORN News Radio.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— No. 16 ranked Dakota Wesleyan volleyball went 3-1 at the Siouxland Invitational in Sioux City, improving to 7-1 on the season. The Tigers opened play on Friday with a four-set loss to fifth-ranked Corban of Oregon, then responded with three straight sweeps over Mayville State, Nelson (Tex.) and Valley City State. Lizzie Tyler recorded 74 digs over the weekend, while setter Kayleigh Hybertson had 152 assists. DWU travels to Madison on Wednesday to face Dakota State.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer played to a 2-2 tied in its season opener on Saturday at Jamestown. The Tigers’ Aliana Nolasco tied the match with a goal in the 89th minute. DWU will be at Bellevue (Neb.) on Saturday at 4:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball has released its 2026-27 schedule, featuring six nonconference games, two exhibitions and 22 GPAC contests. The Tigers open with an exhibition against Northern State Oct. 25 at the Corn Palace. DWU then hosts the inaugural CorTrust Classic, facing William Penn Oct. 30 and Valley City State Oct. 31. Conference play begins Nov. 14 against Hastings. The Tigers are coming off a GPAC Tournament championship and a trip to the NAIA national semifinals.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball has released its 2026-27 schedule, featuring 28 games and an exhibition against South Dakota State. The Tigers open the season Oct. 30 at the Corn Palace against Bethany (Kan.), in the inaugural CorTrust Classic, followed by a matchup with Valley City State Oct. 31. DWU heads to Miami, Florida, for the Cruzin Classic in December. The Tigers begin GPAC play later in November and will host Morningside Jan. 20 and defending conference champion Northwestern later in the season.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer opens the season on Saturday at Jamestown at 3 pm. The Tigers were picked to finish seventh in the GPAC preseason coaches poll released earlier this week.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer is back in action on Friday at Nebraska Wesleyan at 7 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan football starts its season on Saturday at Dakota State at 7 pm.
HIGH SCHOOL
— Huron’s Tiger Stadium will reopen for activities Monday following repairs from the July storm. Huron athletic director Scott DeBoer says the damaged turf has been repaired and the remaining light poles have been removed. The stadium will remain without lights, but activities can resume during daylight hours until the lighting system is restored. Tiger Stadium had been closed since the July storm because of damage to the field and light structures.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s soccer suffered its first loss of the season, falling 2-0 at Kansas State on Sunday. The Jackrabbits played a woman down for more than 70 minutes after goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart was issued a red card in the 20th minute. Leah Bacon took over in goal and made a career-high five saves. Kansas State scored in the 28th minute and added another goal early in the second half. SDSU falls to 3-1 on the season as the Jackrabbits return home Thursday to host Western Illinois at 7 p.m.
— South Dakota State volleyball starts its season on Friday vs. Sacramento State at 5 pm CST. The Jackrabbits will play three matches as part of the Pepperdine Tournament. SDSU plays the host Pepperdine on Saturday at 7 pm CST, followed by Villanova on Sunday at Noon CST.
— South Dakota State football starts its season on Saturday vs. Stetson at 6 pm. The Jackrabbit pregame show starts at 4 pm on KORN News Radio.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s soccer scored three goals in just over four minutes in the second half to beat Morningside 3-0 on Sunday in the Coyotes’ home opener. The Coyotes improved to 2-1-1 on the season at they will be at Northern Colorado on Thursday at 8 pm.
— USD volleyball starts its season on Friday at the Drake Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, facing the host Drake at 6 pm. The Coyotes take on Milwaukee on Saturday at 3 pm, followed by DePaul on Sunday at 11 am.
— USD football starts its season on Saturday vs. Central Connecticut State at 1 pm.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Fernando Tatis Jr. hit two homers and drove in four runs as the San Diego Padres beat the Minnesota Twins 8-1 for a three-game sweep. San Diego won for the 11th time in 14 games and for the 21st time in 28. The Twins came into the series tied with Texas for the American League’s third wild card but have dropped two games back of the Rangers and Cleveland. Minnesota, at 63-68, starts a three-game road series against the Athletics on Monday at 8:40 pm.
GOLF
— Wyndham Clark won the BMW Championship, holding off Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay for his third PGA Tour victory of the season. Clark closed with an even-par 70 and finished at 17-under, winning by three shots. McIlroy was third, one shot behind Cantlay, who finished runner-up and moved into the top 30 of the FedEx Cup standings. Gary Woodland tied for fourth and also qualified for next week’s Tour Championship. Clark also moved into the top six automatic spots for the U.S. Presidents Cup team.
NASCAR
— Ryan Blaney won his second straight NASCAR Cup Series race at New Hampshire, overcoming a pit-road mistake to beat Bubba Wallace by just over half a second. Blaney led a race-high 115 of 301 laps for his 20th career victory and third win this season. Josh Berry finished third, followed by Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson. NASCAR’s regular season ends Saturday at Daytona.
TENNIS
— Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz will open the U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament against a team that advances from Monday’s eight-team qualifying event. Williams is returning to the U.S. Open for the first time since 2022, while Alcaraz is a two-time men’s singles champion. The first round and quarterfinals are Tuesday, with the semifinals and final Wednesday. The winning team will split a $1 million prize. Williams and Alcaraz received a wild card into the 16-team event.
WNBA
— Caitlin Clark scored 37 points and Kelsey Mitchell had 30, helping the Indiana Fever pull away from the Chicago Sky for a 113-90 victory on Sunday night. Clark made a career-high eight of Indiana’s franchise-record 18 3-pointers. She also had 10 assists.
NFL
— The Cleveland Browns are waiving tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who has an agreement to return to LSU for the 2026 season if he clears waivers. Wright is believed to be the first player to sign with an NFL team and then return to college. He signed with Philadelphia after going undrafted before Cleveland claimed him off waivers. Wright played for new LSU coach Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss the past two seasons, catching 39 passes for 635 yards and five touchdowns last year. Wright gained eligibility for another season after joining a group of athletes who received court orders allowing them to return to college.
MLB
— Kyle Schwarber’s MLB-leading 39th homer of the season was a two-run shot with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Philadelphia Phillies scored six runs in the ninth to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4. The win was the Phillies’ ninth straight and gave Philadelphia its third consecutive series sweep.
— Blake Snell threw six scoreless innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers won their sixth straight game by defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0.
— Ian Happ and Pedro Ramírez each hit grand slams and had five RBIs, while Pete Crow-Armstrong also homered as the Chicago Cubs blew out the Seattle Mariners 19-2.
— Michael Harris II hit a solo homer, while Tyler Mahle allowed one run over five innings as the Atlanta Braves beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 in the Little League Classic on Sunday night.
— Nick Sogard hit his second career homer, while Jake Bennett struck out six in seven innings as the Boston Red Sox finished a sweep of the San Francisco Giants with a 5-4 win. Boston finished their homestand 5-1. They are 7-3 since a five-game losing streak.
— Chase DeLauter had two triples and drove in two runs as the Cleveland Guardians rolled past the Colorado Rockies 7-2 to finish a sweep of their three-game series. The win was the fourth in a row and sixth in the past eight games for the Guardians, who remain tied with the Texas Rangers for the American League’s third and final wild-card spot.
— Ezequiel Durán and Elias Díaz hit solo homers, while Cal Quantrill worked six scoreless innings as the Texas Rangers beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-3. With the win, the Rangers moved into a tie with the Houston Astros for first place in the AL West with records of 65-66.
— Max Muncy hit a go-ahead solo homer in the seventh inning as the Athletics rallied from a six-run deficit to beat the Houston Astros 7-6.
— Ben Rice hit a bases-loaded single to score two runs and cap a three-run sixth inning, as the New York Yankees pulled away for an 8-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
— Nick Loftin and John Rave homered, while Kyle Isbel drove in three runs as the Kansas City Royals extended their winning streak to eight games with an 11-7 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The Royals’ winning streak is their longest since May 2024.
— Tristan Peters homered with one out in the ninth inning to give the Chicago White Sox a 2-1 victory over the New York Mets.
— Ildemaro Vargas hit a go-ahead, two-run triple in a four-run seventh inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Arizona remains two games behind San Diego for the final NL wild-card spot.
— Xavier Edwards hit a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning as the Miami Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 6-2 to complete a three-game sweep.
