MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell’s gymnastics season ended Saturday at the Class AA Individual State Competition at Mitchell High School with two athletes placing in the top three of the all-around standings. Harrisburg’s Katelyn Maeschen won the all-around title with a score of 39.1. Mitchell’s Kyanna Gropper finished second at 38.4, and teammate Olivia Prunty placed third at 37.6. Maeschen claimed event titles in all four events: vault, bars, beam and floor. Gropper recorded three runner-up finishes; beam (9.8), vault (9.4) and bars (9.5), and placed fourth on floor (9.5). Prunty finished third on bars (9.5) and third on vault (9.3).
— Mitchell Kernels basketball takes on Sioux Falls Washington on Tuesday. The boys will be in Sioux Falls, while the Kernel girls will be at home vs. the No. 3 ranked Warriors. Coverage of the girls game starts at 6 pm with the KORNer Booth pregame show with tip-off at 7 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels girls wrestling will compete at the Region 3A Tournament on Friday at 3 pm at Mitchell High School. The boys also host the Region 3A Tournament on Saturday at 10 am at Mitchell High School.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball had its 15-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday with a 75-63 loss at Mt. Marty. The Tigers were held to just 34% shooting and 4-of-19 from three. Taliyah Hayes had a game-high 18 points off the bench, Emma Yost finished with 15 points and Avery Broughton had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Tigers, 21-5 on the season and 17-3 in the GPAC, host Dordt on Wednesday at 6 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball lost at Mt. Marty 88-76 on Saturday. Steele Morgan had a team-high 18 points of 6-of-7 shooting, while Tyson Stevenson added 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The Tigers host Dordt on Wednesday at 7:45 pm for their final home game of the season.
— Dakota Wesleyan softball split a doubleheader on Saturday at Northern State, winning game one 9-3, before losing game two 8-0. The Tigers, now 5-1 on the season, heads to Jamestown, N.D., this weekend for four games. DWU takes on Minot State on Friday at 3:30 pm, followed by Dickinson State at 6 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan baseball swept Dickinson State in a four-game series over the weekend winning both games on Saturday 6-3 and 5-4 and both games on Sunday 4-3 and 5-1. The Tigers, now 6-2 on the season, will be at York (Neb.) for a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday starting at Noon.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s basketball defeated Kansas City 93-40 on Saturday afternoon. The Jacks went on a 22-3 run in the first quarter and had a 54-17 halftime lead. Emilee Fox set a new career high with 26 points on 7-of-9 shooting from three. Madison Mathiowetz added 18 points, with 14 of those in the first quarter. Brooklyn Meyer had her seventh double-double of the year, finishing with 11 points, 13 rebounds and a career-high seven assists. SDSU will be at Oral Roberts on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State men’s basketball used a dominant second half and red-hot 3-point shooting to pull away from Oral Roberts on Saturday and earn an 87–69 road win. After taking a 36–29 lead into halftime, the Jackrabbits erupted for 51 second-half points, shooting 60% from the field and 63% from three over the final 20 minutes. SDSU finished the night 12-for-23 from three. Kalen Garry led five Jackrabbits in double figures with 18 points, while Jaden Jackson was 5-of-8 from three with 15 points. SDSU hosts North Dakota State on Wednesday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State softball went 3-1 over the weekend in Stephenville, Texas, with a pair of wins over Colgate on Saturday and Sunday, 11-3 and 11-1. The Jackrabbits improved to 9-3 on the season. They travel to Murray, Kentucky, this weekend for four games. SDSU takes on Green Bay on Friday at 10 am, followed by Murray State at 3 pm.
— South Dakota State baseball were swept in a season-opening three game series at UTSA losing by a combined score of 43-10, including a 13-1 loss on Sunday. SDSU takes on Incarnate Word on Tuesday and Wednesday for singles games at 2 pm in San Antonio.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD softball lost all five games over the weekend at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona. The Coyotes lost three games to Sacramento State and one each to Northern Colorado and Grand Canyon, USD, 2-8 on the season, travels to Arlington, Texas this weekend with five games on the schedule. The Coyotes face Wichita State on Friday at 10 am, followed by Creighton at 12:30 pm.
— USD women’s basketball, 20-6 on the season and 10-2 in the Summit League, host Omaha on Thursday at 7 pm.
— USD men’s basketball will be at Denver on Thursday at 8 pm CST.
AMATEUR BASEBALL
— Mitchell’s Dan Sabers has been elected president of the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Association. He was chosen Sunday during the group’s annual meeting, winning a 6–3 vote. Sabers replaces Dale Weber, who stepped down after the 2025 season following nearly four decades in the role. At the meeting, officials confirmed Mitchell will host the state amateur tournament in 2026 and 2027.
NASCAR
— Tyler Reddick won the Daytona 500 on Sunday after a last-lap crash took out leader Chase Elliott. Reddick, driving for 23XI Racing, co-owned by Michael Jordan and driver Denny Hamlin, led just one lap all day, the final one, to claim the victory. The win snapped a 38-race drought for the 30-year-old Reddick and gave Jordan his first Daytona 500 win as a team owner. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished second and Joey Logano was third. Reddick’s teammate Bubba Wallace led a race-high 40 laps and ended up 10th.
NBA
— Anthony Edwards won the Most Valuable Player award while leading his “Stars” team past their fellow Americans on the “Stripes” team 47-21 to win the final of the NBA All-Star Game. The Minnesota Timberwolves star claimed his first All-Star MVP award with a tying 3-pointer in the first round-robin game followed by eight points in the final, which was the only game without a dramatic late finish in this year’s mini-tournament comprising the main event of All-Star weekend at the Los Angeles Clippers’ Intuit Dome. The slightly older Stripes had beaten the slightly younger Stars on De’Aaron Fox’s 3-pointer at the buzzer two games earlier.
— LeBron James still hasn’t decided whether his 23rd NBA season will be his last. The 41-year-old James again confirmed he is not on a farewell tour this season with the Los Angeles Lakers, even tough he teared up during a tribute to his career in Cleveland last month. James repeated his regular declarations that he hasn’t made a decision and he is focused on the final 28 games of the regular season with the Lakers. James could be a free agent this summer.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— Kansas State fired head basketball coach Jerome Tang on Sunday night, four days after many Wildcats fans showed up with bags over their heads for a home blowout. Athletic director Gene Taylor announced the move in a statement, saying: “Recent public comments and conduct, in addition to the program’s overall direction, have not aligned with K-State’s standards for supporting student-athletes and representing the university.” Kansas State is 10-15 overall and 1-11 in the Big 12. In four seasons at the school, the 59-year-old Tang was 71-57 overall and 29-39 in the conference, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2023.

— The Seattle Seahawks are expected to hire San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach and run game coordinator Brian Fleury as their new offensive coordinator. Fleury has been a member of San Francisco’s coaching staff since 2019. He has spent the last four seasons as the 49ers’ tight ends coach.
