AMATEUR BASEBALL – SUNDAY

Kimball/White Lake 3, Chamberlain 2 – Ethan Price with five shutout innings with 10 strikeouts, allowing just two hits.

Wessington Springs 5, Burke 1 (7 innings) – Five runs in the second innings for Wessington Springs. Parker DeJean allowed one run and three hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings.

MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell’s 18-and-under baseball split a doubleheader with the Sanford Sports Academy’s 16U Red team on Sunday at Cadwell Park. Sanford won the first game 20-8 in five innings, while Mitchell responded with an 8-5 win in the second contest.

— Mitchell 16-and-under baseball split a home doubleheader against Rapid City on Friday night at Drake Field. Mitchell won 11-5 in the first game, before the Bullets answered back with a 9-6 win in the nightcap. The doubleheader was the regular-season finale for Mitchell (19-10), which now awaits the Class A 16U state tournament July 25-27 in Yankton. Mitchell will begin state tournament play at noon Friday in Yankton against Harrisburg Gold in pool play.

— Mitchell 14-and-under baseball team fell twice in a pair of games Sunday against Brandon Valley at Drake Field. Brandon Valley won 10-9 in six innings in the first game and won 14-1 in four innings in Game 2. Mitchell (17-16) faces Tea Area for a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday in Tea.

The teams will play a best-of-three series, beginning on July 23 and with games two and three on July 24.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Royce Lewis hit two home runs, his first career multi-homer game, and Joe Ryan struck out 11 in seven innings as the Minnesota Twins beat the Colorado Rockies 7-1 to prevent a three-game sweep. Coming off his first All-Star appearance, Ryan gave up one run and five hits with no walks. Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Twins. Matt Wallner hit a two-run homer in the third and Harrison Bader added a solo shot. Minnesota starts a three-game series in Los Angeles tonight vs. the Dodgers at 9:10 pm.

PGA
— Scottie Scheffler dominated the British Open on Sunday at Royal Portrush leading by as many as seven shots to shoot a 68 to win by four shots at -17. Scheffler won his second major of the year after the PGA Championship. Now he goes to the U.S. Open next year with a chance to complete the career Grand Slam. Harris English was runner-up at -13.

NASCAR
— Denny Hamlin won for the second straight year at Dover Motor Speedway, holding a late lead through a rain delay and an overtime finish on Sunday for his series-best fourth win of the season. Hamlin won in the No. 11 Toyota for the second straight time at Dover to add to wins this season at Martinsville, Darlington and Michigan. Hamlin has 58 NASCAR Cup Series victories, leaving him two short of Kevin Harvick for 10th on the career list.

NFL
— NFLPA chief strategy officer JC Tretter is resigning from his position and has withdrawn himself from consideration for the NFLPA’s interim executive director position. Tretter, 34, had been in the role since October 2024. He was the player president from 2020 to 2024 and reportedly was a candidate to serve as the interim executive director following Lloyd Howell’s resignation last Thursday.

— The Kansas City Chiefs and defensive end George Karlaftis have reached an agreement on a four-year, $93 million contract extension that includes $62 million guaranteed. With two years left on his rookie contract, the 24-year-old Karlaftis made a long-term commitment to the Chiefs with the new deal, which runs through the 2030 season. In his three years with the Chiefs, Karlaftis has recorded 24.5 sacks.

— A New York City pawn shop owner has pleaded guilty to buying and selling luxury items stolen by a national burglary crew whose victims include Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Burrow was playing a road game in December against the Dallas Cowboys when items were stolen from his home. An FBI complaint unsealed in February listed the total value of items stolen at around $300,000.

NBA
— A professional bettor placed 30 wagers in 46 minutes, all involving Terry Rozier in a 2023 NBA game, according to documents that reveal new details about the suspicious betting under scrutiny by federal investigators. On the morning of March 23, 2023, a bettor at a sportsbook in Biloxi, Mississippi, placed $13,759 in bets on the unders on Rozier’s stats in a game that night between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans. All 30 bets won, after Rozier, an eight-year veteran with the Hornets at the time, exited 10 minutes into the game, citing a foot issue. In all, at least six sportsbooks in multiple states detected suspicious betting on Rozier props that day, with the bulk of the activity occurring in Louisiana and Mississippi. The NBA investigated the unusual activity in 2023 and found that no league rules were violated. Two years later, Rozier is one of three NBA players known to have been under investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. Rozier has not been charged or accused of any wrongdoing.

— Veteran guard Marcus Smart will sign with the Los Angeles Lakers after receiving a contract buyout from the Washington Wizards. Smart, who excelled for the Boston Celtics for nine seasons, has spent the past two years with Memphis and Washington. Smart will get a two-year, $11 million deal with L.A.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Authorities say an Ole Miss freshman football player has been killed in a shooting in Tennessee. Polce found 18-year-old Corey Adams with a gunshot wound late Saturday in a vehicle in Cordova on the outskirts of Memphis. Four other unidentified men were injured in the shooting. Authorities are investigating the death as a homicide.

MLB
— Abner Uribe retired Mookie Betts with the bases loaded for the final out as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 for their 10th straight win. Shohei Ohtani hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers, but Isaac Collins snapped a sixth-inning tie with a two-run single as the Brewers finished 6-0 this season against L.A. The Dodgers have lost 10 of 12.

— Detroit’s Matt Vierling hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the eighth inning as the Detroit Tigers snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak by beating the Texas Rangers 2-1. Tarik Skubal allowed only four hits and one run over 6 2/3 innings with 11 strikeouts in a no decision.

— Aaron Judge hit his 351st career homer in a 4-2 win over the Braves, moving into a tie with Alex Rodriguez for sixth place in Yankees history. Judge’s homer was his 36th of the season.

— Wilyer Abreu homered twice and drove in three runs as the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs 6-1.

— Juan Soto scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, beating a throw to the plate on a sharp grounder to second base, as the New York Mets avoided a three-game sweep with a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

— Kris Bubic pitched five shutout innings for Kansas City, while Salvador Perez homered and doubled as the Royals beat Miami 7-4 to the Marlins’ winning streak at four.

— Christian Walker hit a go-ahead solo homer in the sixth inning as the Houston Astros rallied from an early three-run deficit to beat the Seattle Mariners 11-3.

— Miguel Vargas and Mike Tauchman hit back-to-back homers in a four-run first inning, as the Chicago White Sox cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates for their first series sweep this season. The White Sox became the last major league team to sweep a series this season as they sent the Pirates to their 11th loss in 12 games.

— Jose Soriano limited Philadelphia to two runs in seven innings, while Taylor Ward had a three-run double as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Phillies 8-2 for a series victory. The Angels scored five times in the second inning.

— Toronto’s Addison Barger hit a two-run home run, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer added hit solo shots as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the San Francisco Giants 8-6 to match a franchise record with their 10th consecutive home win. Toronto also won 10 straight at home in 1985.

— Arizona’s Eugenio Suárez homered twice for the second consecutive day and Merrill Kelly allowed two runs in six innings to help the Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3. Suárez leads the National League with 35 homers, one more than Shohei Ohtani, and his 85 RBIs are best in the big leagues, two ahead of Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh.

— San Diego’s Xander Bogaerts hit a grand slam in the first inning as the Padres beat the Washington Nationals 8-1.

— Cleveland’s David Fry had a career-high four RBIs, while Gavin Williams struck out 11 as the Guardians defeated the Athletics 8-2.

— Jackson Holliday, Alex Jackson and Ryan O’Hearn homered to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a rain-delayed, 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. The game was delayed for 2 hours, 36 minutes before the seventh inning.
