MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Black 14-and-under baseball finished second at the Cubby’s Classic, held over the weekend in Volga and Brookings. Mitchell went 3-0 in pool play, with wins over Watertown (14-7), Tri-Valley (9-1), and Yankton (4-2). They then defeated Brookings Black 9-6 in the semifinals before falling 3-1 to Pierre in the championship. Mitchell Black (8-5) will play at Sioux Falls Post 15 14U at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
— Mitchell White 13-and-under baseball went 2-1 at the Kirley Memorial Tournament in Pierre over the weekend picking up a 10-7 win over Bismarck and a 14-4 win over Brookings. Mitchell White (4-9) is back in action with a noon doubleheader at Brookings on Thursday.
— Mitchell will host a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) football camp on Wednesday, June 25th from 9 am to 3 pm at Joe Quintal Field. Camp is for players entering grades 5-8 this fall and the cost is $20.

— J.J. Spaun shot a 2-over 72 on Sunday to finish 1-under for his first major title at the U.S. Open at Oakmont. He won by two shots over Robert MacIntyre. He was the only player under par. Spaun birdie his last two holes of the day, including a 65-foot put on the 18th hole. The win vaults Spaun from World No. 119 last year to No. 8 in the rankings. It marks just his second PGA Tour victory and first top-20 finish in a major.

— The Boston Red Sox have traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster deal. The Giants sent right-hander Jordan Hicks, lefty Kyle Harrison, outfield prospect James Tibbs and minor league righty Jose Bello to the Red Sox for the 28-year-old designated hitter. Devers is hitting .272 with 15 homers and 58 RBIs in 73 games.
— Shohei Ohtani is going to be the starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night against San Diego, 21 months after elbow surgery. Ohtani likely will be used as an opener as the Dodgers start a four-game set against the visiting Padres. Ohtani has not pitched in a game since Aug. 23, 2023.

— The Orlando Magic have acquiring guard Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, and four future first-round draft picks, plus a pick swap option. Bane averaged over 19 points per game last season, while Orlando struggled with 3-point shooting last season, ranking last in the league.
WNBA
— Caitlin Clark returned from injury, scoring a season-high 32 points with seven 3-pointers, leading the Indiana Fever to a 102-88 win over the previously unbeaten New York Liberty on Saturday. Clark also added nine assists and eight rebounds, helping the Fever set a franchise record with 17 made three-pointers. Indiana improved to 5-5, ending the Liberty’s 9-0 start. New York’s Sabrina Ionescu scored 34 points, while Breanna Stewart added 24.
NASCAR
— Shane Van Gisbergen won NASCAR’s first Cup Series points-paying race outside the United States of the modern era as The New Zealander led 60 laps to win Sunday in Mexico City. It’s his first Cup victory since he won in his NASCAR debut at the inaugural 2023 street course race in Chicago The win earned Van Gisbergen an automatic spot in NASCAR’s playoffs.

— Mauricio Dubón delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning, giving the Houston Astros a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Twins and a sweep of the three-game series. The Twins have now lost four games in a row and eight of 10. Minnesota will be at Cincinnati on Tuesday at 6:10 pm.

— Ian Happ delivered a game-ending single in the 10th inning, giving the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Chicago improved to 12-6 in one-run games this season.
— Nick Kurtz hit a solo home run in the ninth inning, rallying the Athletics to a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals and completing a three-game sweep at Kauffman Stadium, their first there since 2016.
— Christian Yelich’s 14th homer helped the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2.
— Boston Brayan Bello struck out eight over seven innings, and Rafael Devers hit a homer as the Red Sox shut out the Yankees 2-0, completing a three-game sweep.
— Ryan McMahon’s go-ahead homer in the seventh inning helped the Colorado Rockies to a 10-1 win over Atlanta. Braves pitcher Grant Holmes struck out a career-high 15 batters before Colorado erupted for six runs in the seventh inning.
— The Dodgers Andy Pages hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning, while Shohei Ohtani had three hits and scored two runs as L.A. beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4.
— Elly De La Cruz drove in three runs, scoring three times, and hitting a two-run homer as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Detroit Tigers 8-4. De La Cruz extended his career-best homer streak to four games.
— Shane Baz pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings, combining with three relievers on a five-hitter as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the New York Mets 9-0.
— Nick Castellanos hit a grand slam as the Philadelphia Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays with an 11-4 win.
— Nick Pivetta held Arizona to two hits over seven innings and Jake Cronenworth homered as the San Diego Padres defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-2.
— J.P. Crawford hit a grand slam and Emerson Hancock threw seven scoreless innings as the Seattle Mariners beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-0.
— Rookie Kumar Rocker pitched five scoreless innings as the Texas Rangers completed a 2-1 series sweep of the Chicago White Sox. The Rangers have now won seven of eight games, climbing back to .500 for the first time since May 21.
— Gary Sánchez hit a seventh-inning grand slam as the Baltimore Orioles rolled to an 11-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
— Miami’s Eric Wagaman drove in two runs and Dane Meyers hit a solo home run as the Marlins beat Washington 3-1 to complete a three-game series sweep.
