MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell baseball swept Brookings on Sunday afternoon at Cadwell Park winning both ends of a doubleheader, 10-5 and 6-5. Mitchell took an early 3-2 lead in game one, responding after Brookings scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Five consecutive Mitchell hitters reached base with two outs in the bottom of the first to take a one run lead. Mitchell never trailed the rest of the way, scoring at least one run in all six innings. Parker Mandel was the KORN Player of the Game, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. All nine Mitchell hitters had a least one hit. Mason Herman picked up the win going six innings, allowing two first inning runs on seven hits. In game two, Mitchell would score three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead thanks to a two run double from Mandel and an RBI single from Jaxson Hartman. Mandel finished 2-for-3 with three RBI in game two. Tyler Christensen went six innings for the win giving up three earned runs, three hits and six strikeouts with five walks. Mitchell (12-7) enters the final week of the regular season with six games remaining and three doubleheaders. It starts on Tuesday at 5 pm when Mitchell hosts SF Washington for two games. — Mitchell’s Audry Miller won the triple jump on Friday at the O’Gorman Invitational at 36 feet, 2 inches. The Kernel boys 1,600 sprint medley team of Mason Kempf, Luke Van’t Haaff, Adam Kampshoff and Ben Gerlach finished first in 3 minutes 55 seconds.

— At the 100th Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls on Saturday, Corsica-Stickney’s Paige Timmermans, Remi Nelson, Hadynn Johnson and Braylee Bordewyk won the girls sprint medley relay in 4 minutes, 18 seconds. The Mitchell boys (Carter Lee, Miguel Vizcarra, Sam Mullenmeister and Hunter Patton) placed sixth in the Class AA boys sprint medley relay with a time of 3 minutes, 35 seconds. The Mitchell girls finished fourth in the girls sprint medley relay with a time of 4 minutes, 14 seconds (Lainee Forst, Addie Siemsen, Carsyn Weich and Emerson Smith).

— Mitchell Kernels softball lost on Friday to Brandon Valley 16-3 in five innings after the Lynx scored 13 runs over the final two innings. The Kernels travel to face Rapid City Stevens on Friday at 3 pm, followed by a game vs. Rapid City Central at 6:30 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels boys tennis, 10-5 on the season, host Pierre, Vermillion and Yankton on Monday at Hitchcock Park at 10 am.

— Mitchell girls golf will be at the Huron Invite on Tuesday at 10 am at Broadland Creek Golf Course.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan’s Abby Magnuson claimed all-conference honors this weekend in the discus and shot put. Magnuson placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 136 feet, while also taking fifth in the shot put at 43 feet, 10 inches. Max Raab finished fourth in the men’s javelin at 168 feet, 1 inch. Doane won both the men’s and women’s team titles, while the DWU men were 10th out of 11 teams and the Tiger woman were last among 12 GPAC teams.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State softball ended the regular season with a three-game sweep of North Dakota sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday 3-1 and 2-1. SDSU will be the No. 2 seed after a 13-5 conference record. The Jacks face the winner between USD and Kansas City in the Summit League Tournament. First pitch is at 1:30 pm in Brookings.

— South Dakota State baseball took two over three over the weekend from Northern Colorado, including a 10-2 win on Sunday and an 11-2 win on Saturday. The Jackrabbits start a three-game series at home on Friday as they improve to 10-13 in Summit League play.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD softball ended the regular season with three straight wins vs. Kansas City, winning on Saturday 7-0. The No. 3 seeded Coyotes face No. 6 seed Kansas City on Wednesday at 3:30 pm in Brookings

NBA
— Stepn Curry scored 14 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and Buddy Hield made nine 3-pointers and scored 33 points as the Golden State Warriors advanced to the Western Conference semifinals with a 103-89 win over the Houston Rockets in Game 7. The Warriors will face the Timberwolves Tuesday night in Minnesota.

— Tyrese Haliburton finished with 22 points and 13 assists for the Indiana Pacers, who defeated the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers 121-112 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Andrew Nembhard added a playoff career-high 23 points and made five 3-pointers for the fourth-seeded Pacers, who finished 19 of 36 from three. Cleveland, which was second in the NBA during the regular season with 15 3s per game, was just 9 of 38. Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 33 points.

— Scottie Scheffler matched the PGA Tour’s 72-hole scoring record on Sunday, finishing at 253 (-31) and running away with an eight-shot victory at his hometown CJ Cup Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas. Scheffler closed with a 63 to finish at 31 under par, tied the mark set by Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open.

NFL
— The 2027 NFL Draft will be held in Washington, D.C., according to an anonymous source speaking to the Associated Press. The announcement, set for today at the White House, marks another victory for the Washington Commanders, who recently secured an agreement with the D.C. government to build a new stadium in the city, pending council approval.

MLB
— Harrison Bader hit a go-ahead double off the Green Monster in the eighth inning as the Minnesota Twins took the weekend series against the Boston Red Sox with a 5-4 win on Sunday. Byron Buxton hit a game-opening homer on Garrett Crochet’s first pitch for the Twins, who won consecutive road games for just the second time this season. The Twins are off today before returning home for a three games series vs. Baltimore starting on Tuesday.

— Maikel Garcia hit two of Kansas City’s franchise-record seven home runs as the Royals beat the Baltimore Orioles 11-6. Kansas City entered with a major league-low 18 homers in its first 34 games.

— Freddy Peralta pitched six shutout innings to help Milwaukee beat the Chicago Cubs 4-0.

— Austin Riley hit two two-run homers as the Atlanta Braves end the Dodgers’ seven-game win streak with a 4-3 victory.

— Jonathan Aranda homered and added a two-run single, giving Tampa Bay a 7-5 over the New York Yankees 7-5 to end the Rays’ eight-game stretch of scoring four runs or less.

— Willy Adames homered twice and drove in three runs, helping the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 9-3. Colorado dropped to a major league-worst 6-28 overall and 2-17 on the road.

— Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee pitched five innings before leaving because of leg cramps, while Gabriel Arias had three hits and two RBIs as the Guardians beat the Toronto 5-4.

— Trey Sweeney and Kerry Carpenter each homered and had four hits as they combined to drive in 11 runs as the Detroit Tigers pounded the L.A. Angels 13-1 to win three of four in the series.

— Josh Naylor hit an RBI single in Arizona’s three-run 10th inning as the Diamondbacks defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 11-9 in extra innings. Arizona hung on after leading 7-2 after five innings.

— Willson Contreras drove in three runs on three hits, including a homer, to spark the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-5 win over the New York Mets in the first game of a doubleheader. Victor Scott II robbed Juan Soto of a three-run homer and later hit a tiebreaking double, leading the Cardinals to 5-4 win over the Mets in game two.

— Corey Seager and Adolis García hit two-run singles to highlight Texas’ six-run third inning as Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 8-1 to end a season-high four-game losing streak.

— The White Sox Luis Robert Jr. tied it with an RBI single with two outs in the sixth inning, stole second base and scored the go-ahead run on Edgar Quero’s single as Chicago rallied to beat the Houston Astros 5-4 in a game shortened to seven innings by rain. 31-year-old Lance McCullers started for Houston and threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings in his first outing since Game 3 of the 2022 World Series.

— Rookie Nick Kurtz tripled with one out in the ninth inning and scored on a pinch hit by Tyler Soderstrom to lift the Athletics to a 3-2 victory over the Miami Marlins.
