MITCHELL KERNELS
— A trip to the Class AA state volleyball tournament is on the line Thursday night when the No. 8 seed Mitchell Kernels host the No. 9 seed Spearfish Spartans in the SoDAK 16. The winner advances to the Class AA State Volleyball Tournament, set for November 20–22 in Rapid City. Mitchell enters the postseason at 15-8, its best record since 2018 — the same year the Kernels last qualified for state. They’ll look to replicate their performance from October 4, when they swept Spearfish 3-0 on the road. Since 2007, Mitchell has dominated the series, winning 20 of 24 matchups against the Spartans. Match time is to be determined.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball defeated Dordt 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 24-26, 25-20) to advance to the semifinals of the GPAC Tournament. Evy Knoblock and Lily Ranschau led the Tigers with 14 kills each, while Kayleigh Hybertson had 42 assists. DWU will be at No. 1 seed Northwestern on Wednesday at 7 pm.

— No. 9 Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball bounced back from its first loss of the season on Friday with an 82-58 win on Saturday vs. No. 18 ranked Arizona Christian. Emma Yost set a new career-high with 34 points for the Tigers on 13-of-19 shooting, along with six rebounds. DWU will be at Hastings on Saturday at 2 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan football lost to Midland on Saturday 45-7. The Tigers trailed 17-0 at the end of the first quarter and 31-7 at halftime. DWU ends the season next Saturday when they host Hastings at Joe Quintal Field at 1 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s soccer defeated No. 1 seed Oral Roberts 2-0 on Sunday to win the Summit League Tournament and advance to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. SDSU improves to 13-2-6 on the season. The NCAA Tournament bracket will be revealed this afternoon at 3 pm with first round matches starting on Friday.

— South Dakota State men’s basketball lost its first game of the season on Sunday at Northern Iowa 65-58. Joe Sayler had a game-high 16 points for the Jackrabbits. SDSU will be at Oregon on Wednesday at 8:30 pm.

— South Dakota State volleyball beat St. Thomas 3-1 (21-25, 27-25, 26-16, 25-18) Saturday afternoon. The win clinches the outright Summit League regular season title for SDSU for the second straight year. The Jackrabbits had 19 blocks as a team, a new school record for blocks in a four-set match. Sydni Schetnan had 11 block assists, which is also a school record for a four-set match. SDSU, 20-3 on the season and 14-0 in the Summit League, will be at Kansas City on Thursday at 7 pm.

— South Dakota State women’s basketball improved to 2-0 on the season with a 79-65 home win vs. Rice on Friday night. Brooklyn Meyer had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead SDSU. The Jackrabbits host Murray State on Tuesday at 7 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD running back L.J. Phillips Jr. rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns, including a 32-yarder for the only points of the second half, as the Coyotes knocked off South Dakota State, 24-17, on Saturday afternoon at the DakotaDome. USD improved to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. SDSU dropped its third consecutive game, falling to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in the MVFC. The Jackrabbits provided the opening score 11 seconds into the game as wide receiver Jack Smith lined up in the backfield and took a pitch through a seam on the right side and outraced the USD secondary down the sideline for a 75-yard touchdown run. USD also found the end zone on its first possession, stringing together a 15-play, 70-yard drive that Phillips closed out with a 10-yard touchdown run. SDSU redshirt quarterback Jack Henry was 13-of-24 for 139 yards with a touchdown and interception in his first career start. The Jackrabbits close out the home schedule Nov. 15 with a Senior Day matchup against Illinois State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Dykhouse Stadium. USD ends the regular season next Saturday at Southern Illinois at Noon.

— USD women’s basketball improved to 2-0 on the season with a 75-50 win vs. Air Force on Friday. The Coyotes host Buena Vista on Monday at 7 pm.

— USD volleyball defeated Kansas City on Saturday 3-1 and they improved to 10-4 in the Summit League and 18-8 overall. The Coyotes will be at Oral Roberts on Saturday at Noon.

— USD men’s basketball won its first game of the season on Sunday with a 121-65 victory vs. Ozark Christian College. Redshirt Freshman Porter Ihnen from Lennox, had 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Australian Freshman Jesse McIntosh also had 20 points. USD hosts Southern Indiana on Wednesday at 7 pm.

MLB
— Two pitchers with the Cleveland Guardians have been indicted on charges they took bribes to give sports bettors advance notice of their pitches and intentionally tossed balls instead of strikes to ensure successful bets. Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz have been on non-disciplinary paid leave since July while MLB investigated what it called unusually high in-game betting activity when they pitched. Ortiz was arrested Sunday by the FBI in Boston while Clase was not in immediate custody. Lawyers for both pitchers said their clients were innocent.

NBA
— Lenny Wilkens, a three-time inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame, has died at 88, his family announced on Sunday. Wilkens was honored as both a player and a coach. He was known as one of the finest point guards of his era and later became a renowned coach. He coached nearly 2,500 NBA games, a record that still stands. Wilkens was also inducted into the Hall of Fame as part of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team. He also coached the U.S. to a gold medal in the Atlanta Games in 1996.

NFL
— Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has died at the age of 84. Tagliabue helped bring labor peace and riches to the league during his 17 years as commissioner but was criticized for not taking stronger action on concussions. Tagliabue’s family informed the league of his death in Maryland. Tagliabue, who had developed Parkinson’s disease, was commissioner from 1989, when he succeeded Pete Rozelle, until 2006. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of a special centennial class in 2020.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Texas has returned to the top 10 in The Associated Press college football poll. The Longhorns, ranked No. 10, are set to visit No. 5 Georgia this week. They had dropped out of the top 25 after losing to Florida several weeks ago. Ohio State remains No. 1, followed by Indiana, Texas A&M, Alabama, and Georgia. The ACC has five teams ranked, including Georgia Tech and Miami.
