MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball hung on to win its fifth straight match on Saturday, 3-2 (27-25, 28-26, 18-25, 20-25, 16-14) vs. No. 5 Rapid City Stevens. Addie Siemsen had 53 assists for the Kernels, while Nia Talley and Audrey Miller each had 15 kills. Mitchell improves to 11-4 on the season and moves up to No. 6 in AA seed points, while RC Stevens falls to 21-4. The Kernels are back at home on Tuesday night when they host SF Jefferson at 6:30 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis finished in fourth at the Class AA State Tournament Friday in Sioux Falls. The Kernels had 287 team points, while Rapid City Stevens won the team title with 486.5 points. Sioux Falls Lincoln finished second (417.5 points) and Harrisburg placed third (381.5 points). Eliot Smith earned a third-place finish for Mitchell at No. 2 Singles, while Ava Prunty also took home third at No. 6 Singles. In Flight 3 Singles, Mitchell’s Katie Morgan finished fourth and in Flight 4 Singles Mia Larson also claimed fourth.
— Mitchell hosted the ESD conference cross country meet on Saturday at Wild Oak Golf Course. Harrisburg won the girls team title, while Brandon Valley won the boys team title. Mitchell’s Londyn Schroeder finished 18th overall with a time of 19 minutes, 34 seconds. On the boys side, Mitchell’s Hunter Patton earned all-ESD honors with a 10th place finish of 16 minutes, 29 seconds. Mitchell cross country will compete in Huron at Broadland Creek Golf Course in their final regular season meet on Thursday at 4 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels football hosts No. 1 Huron on Friday night at 7 pm. The KORNer Booth pregame show starts at 6 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan football dropped to 2-5 on the season with a 49-17 loss on Saturday vs. No. 4 Morningside. DWU WR Cole Holden had 12 catches for 233 yards and two touchdowns, while QB Jed Jedson was 21-of-31 for 293 yards and two scores. The Tigers have a bye this week before hosting Waldorf for homecoming on October 25th at 2 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball won at Hastings on Saturday 3-0 (28-26, 27-25, 25-11). Lily Ranschau had a match-high 16 kills for the Tigers with a .371 hitting percentage. DWU improves to 12-8 on the season and 6-4 in the GPAC. Up next, the Tigers host Morningside on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer defeated No. 24 Midland on Saturday 2-1 to improve to 4-1-1 in the GPAC and 6-6-1 overall. The Tigers are now tied with Midland for second place in the GPAC with five matches remaining. DWU will be at last place Waldorf on Wednesday at 5 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer defeated Midland on Saturday 2-0 to improve to 2-1-3 in the GPAC and 3-2-6 overall. DWU will be at Waldorf on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State football won its 33rd consecutive home game on Saturday with a 31-3 Hobo Day victory over Northern Iowa. SDSU forced five turnovers and QB Chase Mason accounted for all four Jackrabbit touchdowns. Mason was 19-of-31 for 251 yards and two touchdowns, while also running for two scores on seven carries. SDSU, 6-0 on the season, will be at Murray State next Saturday at 6 pm. The Jackrabbit pregame starts on 4 pm on KORN.
— South Dakota State volleyball improved to 5-0 on the season in the Summit League with a 3-1 (25-15, 27-25, 15-25, 25-23) win on Saturday vs. St. Thomas. Sylvie Zgonc had a match-high 22 kills for the Jackrabbits, while setter Rylee Martin finished with 45 assists and 16 digs. SDSU, 11-3 on the season, host North Dakota State on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer defeated Omaha on Sunday 3-1 to stay undefeated at home on the season. The Jackrabbits improved to 9-2-4 on the season and 6-0-2 at home. SDSU will be at USD on Saturday at 3 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 19-14 win on Saturday at Indiana State. The Coyotes, 4-3 on the season, had another big day for RB L.J. Phillips Jr., who ran 34 times for 187 yards and a touchdown. USD will be at Northern Iowa next Saturday at 1 pm.
— USD volleyball won in five sets on Saturday at Omaha (21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 15-9). Lauren Medeck had a match-high 23 kills, one short of her career-high, while Avery Van Hook matched her career-high with 58 assists. The Coyotes will be at Kansas City on Wednesday at 7 pm.
— USD women’s soccer lost at Oral Roberts on Sunday 2-1. The Coyotes fall to 6-4-5 on the season and 2-2-1 in the Summit League. USD hosts SDSU on Saturday at 3 pm.

— Cal Raleigh homered and Jorge Polanco drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth-inning single as the Seattle Mariners beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series. Toronto’s George Springer homered on the first pitch of the game for the Blue Jays only run. Anthony Santander singled in the second for Toronto’s only other hit, as Seattle pitchers retired 23 of the Blue Jays’ final 24 batters. Bryce Miller threw six innings for Seattle, allowing only one run on two hits.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Indiana moved up to No. 3 in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll Sunday for its highest ranking in school history and Texas was among five teams entering the Top 25 after eight ranked teams lost over the weekend. Ohio State and Miami remained the top two teams while the Hoosiers earned a four-spot promotion for their 10-point win at then-No. 3 Oregon. No. 4 Texas A&M and No. 5 Mississippi traded places after the Aggies’ 17-point home win over Florida and the Rebels’ three-point home win over Washington State. Alabama moved up two spots to No. 6 and was followed by Texas Tech, Oregon, Georgia and LSU. Texas moved back into the poll at No. 21 after defeating No. 6 Oklahoma 23-6. Nebraska is ranked for the first time at No. 25 after a 34-31 win at Maryland.
— Penn State has fired head football coach James Franklin after a midseason collapse, following three straight losses. The latest defeat, a 22-21 upset at home to Northwestern, effectively ended the Nittany Lions’ College Football Playoff hopes. Franklin, who spent 11 seasons at Penn State, leaves with a 104-45 record but struggled against top-tier teams. Terry Smith will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season. The move comes with a hefty price tag, as Penn State will pay Franklin a $50 million buyout.

— Former NFL quarterback and FOX analyst Mark Sanchez has been released from custody, about a week after police said he was stabbed during a fight with a truck driver in Indiana. He faces a felony battery charge and several misdemeanor charges for what prosecutors have said was a fight over parking. Police say Sanchez was hospitalized with stab wounds to his upper right torso.
NASCAR
— Denny Hamlin secured his 60th career NASCAR Cup Series win at Las Vegas, locking in his spot for NASCAR’s championship finale. Kyle Larson finished second, while reigning champion Joey Logano finished sixth. Meanwhile, Ryan Blaney’s title hopes took a blow after a tire issue led to a crash, leaving him in a must-win situation at Talladega next week, where he’s a three-time winner. Blaney started the day second in points.
WNBA
— A’ja Wilson scored 31 points, while Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young both added 18 as the Las Vegas Aces beat the Phoenix Mercury 97-86 in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals, sweeping their way to a third championship in four seasons. The Aces needed just four games to end the first best-of-seven finals in league history.
