MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball defeated Spearfish 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-17) and Douglas 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 25-2) on Saturday. Addie Siemsen led the Kernels with 50 assists over the seven sets, along with 17 kills, 21 digs and seven blocks. Against Douglas, Nia Talley had eight aces as the Kernels won the fourth set 25-2. Audrey Miller had 18 kills over the weekend, while Kenna Soulek had 28 digs. Mitchell improves to 9-4 on the season and will host Rapid City Central on Friday at 6:30 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer secured the No. 14 seed in Class AA and will face No. 3 seed Pierre on Tuesday night in the SoDak16. Pierre won at Mitchell on September 25th, 2-0. The winner advances to the AA girls soccer state tournament.
— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer secured the No. 16 seed in Class AA and will face No. 1 seed SF Lincoln on Tuesday night at 7 pm in the SoDak16. The Kernels and Patriots did not meet in the regular season. The winner advances to the AA boys soccer state tournament.
— Mitchell Kernels football lost at Aberdeen Central on Friday night 28-13, allowing three non-offensive touchdowns. Mitchell has its final road game of the season on Friday when they take on Brandon Valley at 6 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels boys golf competes at the Class AA state tournament next week at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City on Monday and Tuesday. The Kernels finished seventh at the ESD conference meet on Monday in Brandon.
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis competes at the Class AA state tournament in Sioux Falls on Thursday, October 9 and Friday, October 10. Mitchell finished second behind Harrisburg at the ESD conference meet earlier this week in Yankton.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan football picked up its second win of the season on Saturday with a 33-7 victory at Doane. QB Jed Jenson was 20-of-30 passing for 306 yards and five touchdowns. Cole Holden had three receptions, two for touchdowns, and 83 yards. The Tigers, 2-4 on the season, host No. 4 Morningside next Saturday at 1 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball swept Mt. Marty on Saturday, 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-20). DWU hit .327 as a team, led by Evy Knoblock’s 12 kills and Kayleigh Hybertson’s 29 assists. The Tigers (10-2 on the season, 4-4 in the GPAC) will be at Doane on Friday at 7:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer shutout Doane on Saturday 4-0 to improve to 5-6-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in the GPAC. DWU will be at Midland on Saturday at 5 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer played to a 0-0 tie on Saturday vs. Doane to move to 2-2-6 on the season. DWU will be at Midland on Saturday at 5 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s golf competes at the Mustang Derby at Whispering Creek Golf Club in Sioux City starting on Monday.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State football overcame an early 14-0 deficit to win at Youngstown State Saturday night, 35-30 to move to 5-0 on the season. WR Alex Bullock had a career-high 10 catches for 162 yards, while RB Julius Loughridge had 25 carries for 176 rushing yards and four touchdowns. SDSU returns home next Saturday to face Northern Iowa at 2 pm.
— South Dakota State volleyball improved to 3-0 in the Summit League with a 3-0 win Saturday afternoon at Oral Roberts. The Jackrabbits hit .369 for the match, the best single-match hitting percentage for the team since early in the 2023 season. SDSU’s defense held Oral Roberts to just .075 hitting with 20 attack errors. SDSU hosts Kansas City on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer ran its unbeaten streak to 11 straight matches with a 2-0 win vs. North Dakota State on Sunday. The Jackrabbits improve to 8-1-4 on the season with their lone loss on the season coming at Kansas on August. 17. SDSU will be at Denver on Thursday at 8 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football picked up a 49-24 homecoming win on Saturday vs. Murray State to improve to 3-3 on the season. L.J. Phillips Jr. ran for 244 yards on 24 carries, averaging 10 yards per carry. He also tied his career-high with four rushing touchdowns on the day. The Coyotes will be at Indiana State next Saturday at Noon.
— USD volleyball lost at Denver on Saturday 3-1, despite Morgan Bode’s four-set school record with 13 blocks. As a team, the Coyotes totaled 15 blocks, the second most in a match this year. Lauren Medeck led USD with 13 kills and had a double-double with 10 digs. The Coyotes fall to 9-6 on the season and 1-2 in the Summit League. They host St. Thomas on Thursday at 7 pm.
— USD women’s soccer picked up a 2-1 win over North Dakota on Sunday to improve to 6-3-4 on the season. The Coyotes will be at Kansas City on Thursday at 7 pm.

— Toronto rookie Trey Yesavage set a Blue Jays postseason record by striking out 11 batters in 5 1/3 no-hit innings, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit the first postseason grand slam in team history as Toronto took a 2-0 lead in the ALDS by beating the New York Yankees 13-7. Daulton Varsho had two home runs among his four extra base hits, and Ernie Clement and George Springer both homered as Toronto reached double figures in hits (15) and runs for the second straight game. The Blue Jays had three home runs among their 14 hits in Saturday’s 10-1 win.
— Julio Rodríguez hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning as the Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 in Game 2 of their AL Division Series to even the series. With the game tied at 2-2 and one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Cal Raleigh doubled with one out. Rodríguez then doubled home Raleigh to put the Mariners in front for good. Jorge Polanco homered twice for Seattle. Detroit’s Tarik Skubal went seven innings, allowing two runs and five hits with nine strikeouts.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Miami moved back to No. 2 in The Associated Press college football poll on Sunday, No. 9 Texas Tech has its highest ranking since 2008 and Penn State and Texas fell all the way out of the Top 25 after the two top-10 teams lost to unranked opponents. Miami moved up one spot, ahead of No. 3 Oregon, followed by No. 4 Mississippi and No. 5 Texas A&M. Texas was the AP’s preseason No. 1 team and Penn State was No. 2. Both are now out of the Top 25. Penn State lost as a 24-point favorite at winless UCLA, 42-37. Meanwhile, No. 9 Texas lost on the road at Florida 29-21.
— Deion Sanders says he’s hurting like crazy and believes he has more blood clots in his leg. The Colorado head football coach sat at times late in a loss at TCU on Saturday night. Sanders says he’s not getting blood to his leg and that it’s throbbing. He says he has a doctor’s appointment Monday to see about the issue. The 58-year-old Sanders spent time away from his team this summer as he went through treatment for bladder cancer. He had two toes amputated from his left foot in 2021 because of blood clot issues. He had a procedure in 2023 to remove a blood clot from his right leg.
WNBA FINALS
— Jackie Young set a WNBA Finals record with 21 points in the third quarter, finishing with 32 to carry the Las Vegas Aces to a 91-78 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday for a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Game 3 is Wednesday in Phoenix. A’ja Wilson scored 20 of her 28 points in the first half and had 14 rebounds, while Chelsea Gray finished with 10 points and 10 assists for Vegas.
— Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has canceled a meeting with WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert expected to take place next week. Engelbert said Friday that she had talked to Collier earlier this week after the Lynx player said the league has “the worst leadership in the world” and a commissioner who lacks accountability in a blistering assessment. The two had planned to meet next week, either in person or virtually.
NASCAR
— Joey Logano has secured the final spot in the next round of the NASCAR playoffs after a dramatic race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. On Sunday, Logano battled Ross Chastain for the last transfer position, with the two swapping spots multiple times. Denny Hamlin played a key role in the outcome when he made contact with Chastain, causing him to spin and finish behind Logano. This allowed Logano to advance and eliminate Chastain. Shane van Gisbergen won the race, while Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace, and Austin Cindric were also eliminated from the playoffs.
NFL
— Former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez has been arrested after he was stabbed in an overnight altercation in downtown Indianapolis on Friday. Sanchez was charged with battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication. Indianapolis police said that they were investigating a confrontation between two men, one of whom was hospitalized with stab wounds. Sanchez was in Indianapolis to call Sunday’s Raiders-Colts game.
