MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels football lost at Spearfish on Friday 42-16 after a 3 ½ hour weather delay. The Spartans would score two touchdowns in the final 1:14 of the second quarter to take a 28-10 lead at halftime. Mitchell outgained Spearfish 306 yards to 282 yards and had 21 first downs. Logan Bessler had a team-high 15 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown. Mithcell, 1-2 on the season, host Watertown on Friday at 7 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels boys golf finished 10th out of 16 teams on Friday in Yankton at Hillcrest Golf Club. Asher Dannenbring shot a +3 (75) to finished seventh individually. The Kernels compete at the Brookings Invite on Monday at 10 am at the Brookings Country Club.
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis hosts Yankton and SF Lincoln for a triangular on Tuesday, starting at 10 am.
— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer host Vermillion on Tuesday at 6 pm at Joe Quintal Field.
— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer, 4-5 on the season, will be at Yankton on Thursday at 7 pm.
— Mitchell volleyball, 4-3 on the season, hosts Yankton on Thursday at 6:30 pm. The KORN pregame show starts at 6:15 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan football lost at No. 21 ranked Concordia on Saturday 27-22. The Tigers held the ball for nearly 42 of the 60 minutes and had a 22-21 lead going into the fourth quarter before giving up a pair of field goals in the final 15 minutes. Cole Holden had 10 catches for 119 yards and a touchdown. DWU hosts Northwestern on Saturday at 1 pm at Joe Quintal Field. The Red Raiders lost on Saturday at Mt. Marty 24-14.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer defeated Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday 4-1. The Tigers host Mt. Marty on Saturday at 5 pm at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer hosts Dakota State on Tuesday at 6 pm at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell. The Tigers are 0-1-3 on the season.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, 7-5 on the season, host Dordt on Wednesday at 7:30 pm at the Christen Athletic Center in Mitchell.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— No. 2 ranked South Dakota State defeated Drake 37-21 on Saturday to move to 3-0 on the season. Julius Loughridge rushed for 83 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while QB Chase Mason was 15-of-25 for 225 yards and a score. SDSU hosts Mercyhurst on Satudray at 6 pm with the Jackrabbit pregame show starting at 4 pm on KORN News Radio.
— South Dakota State volleyball won two out of three matches over the weekend in Minneapolis at the Diet Coke Classic. The Jacks swept Dayton on Friday and also swept South Florida on Saturday. SDSU would lose 3-1 to No. 13 Minnesota on Sunday, winning the second set 28-26, to fall to 5-2 on the season. The Jacks hosts Boise State for back-to-back matches this weekend, starting on Friday at 6 pm.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer defeated Northern Colorado on Sunday 6-3 to improve to 5-1-3 on the season. The Jackrabbits host Wyoming on Thursday at 7 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football defeated Northern Colorado 24-17 in overtime on Saturday behind 301 rushing yards from L.J. Phillips Jr. Phillips ran for two touchdowns on 31 carries. It was also the first career win for USD head coach Travis Johansen. The Coyotes, 1-2 on the season, host Drake on Saturday at 1 pm.
— USD volleyball lost to No. 17 Kansas on Saturday 3-0 to go 2-1 at the Coyote Invitational in Vermillion. USD swept Green Bay on Thursday and defeated Florida Gulf Coast on Friday in five sets. This week the Coyotes host the South Dakota Classic with matches against Villanova, Wichita State and Drake.
— USD women’s soccer lost at Drake on Sunday 4-0. The Coyotes host Wyoming on Sunday at 1pm.
GOLF
— Retief Goosen won the Sanford International in Sioux Falls on Sunday for his fourth career PGA Tour Champions victory, closing with a 3-under 67 for a two-stroke win over Bo Van Pelt. Goosen finished at 13-under at Minnehaha Country Club. Goosen won the U.S. Open in 2001 and 2004. Ernie Els and Darren Clarke tied for third at 8 under.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— James McCann homered and drove in four runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Minnesota Twins 6-4. Matt Wallner hit his 22nd home run of the season for Minnesota to cut the Arizona lead to 4-3 in the seventh inning. The Twins start a three-game home series vs. the Yankees tonight at 6:40 pm.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Ohio State, Penn State and LSU are still the top three teams in Week 4 of the AP Top 25 College Football poll. Miami moved up to No. 4 after defeating South Florida and Georgia move to No. 5 after needing overtime to win at Tennessee. Texas A&M made the biggest jump of the week into the top 10 after its 42-41 win at Notre Dame, while the Irish became the first team since 1988 to stay in the Top 25 with an 0-2 record. Oregon slipped two spots to No. 6 despite defeating Northwestern, followed by No. 7 Florida State, Texas, Illinois and Texas A&M.
— UCLA has fired head football coach DeShaun Foster after the team started the season 0-3. The move came after the Bruins lost to New Mexico 35-10 on Friday, marking their second straight loss to a Mountain West Conference opponent. Foster, who took over from Chip Kelly in February 2024, had a 5-10 record with the team. The Bruins were also defeated by Utah and UNLV this season. Tim Skipper will serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season.
— Virginia Tech has fired head football coach Brent Pry after the program stumbled to its first 0-3 start since 1987. It came a day after the Hokies fell behind 31-0 on the way to a 45-26 loss to Old Dominion. Offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery will serve as interim coach.
MLB
— Cal Raleigh tied Mickey Mantle’s season record for most home runs by a switch hitter with his 54th as the Seattle Mariners extended their winning streak to nine by routing the Los Angeles Angels 11-2 to take sole possession of the AL West lead for the first time since June. George Kirby matched his career high with 14 strikeouts as the Mariners completed a four-game sweep and won for the 20th time in their last 23 home games.
— Toronto’s George Springer homered and drove in two runs, while Shane Bieber pitched six innings as the American League-leading Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 11-2 to complete a three-game sweep. Springer went 3 for 4 with three extra base hits and Alejandro Kirk had three hits and an RBI.
— Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs, helping the Kansas City Royals overcome Kyle Schwarber’s 52nd homer and delay the Philadelphia Phillies from clinching the NL East with a 10-3 win. Philadelphia, which entered with a six-game winning steak, leads the NL East by 12 games over the second-place New York Mets.
— Bo Naylor drove in all three Guardians runs, including a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning, as Cleveland beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 for a series sweep. The Guardians have won four straight and nine of 10. They are 2 1/2 games behind Houston for the AL’s final wild card spot.
— Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer as the New York Mets ended an eight-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers. The Mets have just a 1 ½ game lead over the San Francisco Giants for the final playoff spot in the National League.
— Teoscar Hernández had his second four-hit game this season as the Dodgers beat San Francisco 10-2 to drop the Giants 1 ½ games behind the New York Mets for the last NL wild card spot.
— Rookie Nick Kurtz hit one of the Athletics’ four home runs, a go-ahead, two-run shot in the fifth inning that led the Athletics over Cincinnati 7-4 for a three-game sweep that dropped the Reds 2 ½ games back for the last NL wild card spot.
— Carlos Narváez’s solo homer capped a six-run first inning for Boston, while Garrett Crochet matched his season high with 12 strikeouts as the Red Sox held off the Yankees for a 6-4 win to avoid a three-game sweep.
— Jackson Merrill hit a three-run home run and the San Diego Padres withstood a career-high, five-RBIs performance by Mickey Moniak to beat the Colorado Rockies 9-6 and take three of four in the series.
— Detroit’s José Urquidy got four outs in his return from Tommy John surgery, combining with three other pitchers to lead the Tigers over the Miami Marlins 2-0 as the Tigers tied Pittsburgh for the major league lead with their 17th shutout this season.
— José Fermín and Nathan Church hit RBI singles as the St. Louis Cardinals scored all their runs in the second inning of a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. The win kept the Cardinals from going winless during a six-game road trip. Milwaukee lost a day after becoming the first major league team to clinch a playoff berth.
— The Cubs Nico Hoerner had three RBIs, including a go-ahead, two-run double in Chicago’s 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3. Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero, at 22-year-old, hit his 44th homer.
— Atlanta’s Ozzie Albies drove in three runs with two hits and Sandy León homered in his first start in more than two years as the Braves beat the Houston Astros 8-3.
— Washington’s James Wood scored the go-ahead run from first base on when center fielder Oneil Cruz misplayed Dayton Lile’s eighth-inning double as the Nationals overcame a three-run, first-inning deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3.
