SDSU Defeats UND, Nations Only Unbeaten at 16-0

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State volleyball is the last remaining unbeaten team in the country.

The Jackrabbits entered the weekend as one of two teams still without a loss, then a loss by No. 1 Pitt Saturday afternoon and a 3-1 win for the Jackrabbits that same evening, the Jacks are the last team standing.

SDSU topped North Dakota 25-17, 25-20, 19-25, 25-11 in front of 1,816 fans at First Bank & Trust Arena to improve to 16-0 on the season and 5-0 in Summit League action. UND falls to 8-9 on the season and 1-5 in the conference.

The Jacks hit .298 for the match and recorded 14 team blocks, holding UND to a .126 attack rate. SDSU was dominant in the final set, hitting .400 as a team while the Hawks hit in the negative.

Sydni Schetnan was outstanding Saturday. The redshirt junior finished with 13 kills on 22 errorless swings (.591 hit percentage) and seven total blocks, good for 17 points. She had four blocks and four kills in the first set alone.

Sylvie Zgonc contributed 12 kills at a .250 clip to go with eight digs and a pair of block assists. Madison Burr, a freshman, tallied eight kills while hitting .333 and six blocks (five assists, one solo). Alyssa Groves was also errorless with six kills on 13 swings (.462). Annalee Ventling-Brown took part in six blocks and added two kills for the Jacks.

Setters Rylee Martin and Camryn Honn were the Jackrabbit leaders in digs with 10 and nine, respectively. Martin dished 23 assists and Honn had nine. Joslyn Richardson led all players with a career-high four ace serves.

North Dakota’s Paige Barber had 11 kills for the Hawks but also committed eight attack errors. Vanessa Imoh posted 10 kills at a .381 rate. Jarolin de los Santos Lagos notched three ace serves.

NOTES

  • The 1,816 fans in attendance at First Bank & Trust Arena made up the second-largest home volleyball crowd in program history. The largest crowd was the Jacks’ home opener against Kansas City October 3 (2,853).
  • The Jacks are 5-0 in four-set matches this season.
  • SDSU improves to 60-32 all-time against North Dakota.
