KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Powered by four players in double figures, the South Dakota State women’s basketball team cruised to a 72-49 win over Kansas City Thursday night at the Swinney Center. The Jackrabbits improve to 14-5 on the season and 6-0 in Summit League action.
Both teams got off to a slow start on the offensive end, but the Jackrabbits scored a combined 53 points across the second and third quarters to lead by as many as 28. Tori Nelson had an all-around night for the Jacks, tallying 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block in 26 minutes.
Paige Meyer matched Nelson’s 14 points and dished a game-high five assists. Madison Mathiowetz scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds, followed by 11 points, seven boards and seven steals by Brooklyn Meyer.
KC led 12-10 after 10 minutes of action, then a 16-4 SDSU run over the first seven minutes of the second quarter pushed the Jackrabbits out to a 26-16 lead. A 13-2 stretch to start the second half made it a 21-point game, 44-23, and SDSU led by 28 heading into the final period.
Madysen Vlastuin finished with nine points for SDSU, all from beyond the arc, and Mesa Byom chipped in six points. The Jacks shot 42 percent from the floor and connected on five 3-point buckets.
Kansas City’s Nariyah Simmons scored nine points to lead the Roos. KC was held to 31 percent shooting. Kansas City moves to 10-11 on the year and 1-5 in conference games.

- SDSU has held all six conference opponents to 55 points or fewer this season.
