South Dakota State plays in-state in the Black Hills region on Thursday as the Jackrabbits take on Northern Colorado at 8 p.m. CT in The Monument’s Summit Arena in Rapid City.
The neutral-site affair sees SDSU compete in its first game in Rapid City since 1999. The Bears last competed in the region when they took on Black Hills State in Spearfish in 1973.
The Jacks return to the hardwood after late-game heroics led to SDSU earning an 80-79 victory in its inaugural game at First Bank & Trust Arena last Friday. SDSU led by as many as 13 in the second half, but trailed Long Beach State 79-77 in the waning moments. An Oscar Cluff three-point play with 1.5 seconds left made the difference.
Cluff’s second straight double-double gave him Summit League Peak Performer of the Week accolades. Through his first two games as a Jackrabbit, the senior from Australia is averaging 18.5 points and 14 rebounds per game.
SDSU stands at 2-0 overall thanks to the contriubtions of a variety of newcomers. Joe Sayler is leading SDSU with 19.5 points per game. Owen Larson ranks among the top 100 players in DI hoops playing nearly 34 minutes per appearance. Making college debuts this year include Stoney Hadnot, Jaden Jackson and William Whorton.
UNC is 2-1 early in the season. The Bears have earned a pair of victories over Division II opponents, while they lost a double overtime thriller to Colorado in Boulder, 90-88, last Friday. The Bears have four double-digit scorers led by Isaiah Hawthorne’s 16.7 points per contest clip.
Northern Colorado finished the 2023-24 campaign with a 19-13 record and 12-6 mark in Big Sky Conference play. The Bears were picked to take third in their conference in their preseason coaches poll and fourth in their media poll.
The contest on Thursday re-ignites a series for a pair of former conference North Central Conference foes. Both institutions transitioned to the Division I level in the mid-2000s. The two teams last met in a regular season game in 2005, though their annual series within the conference ended ran from 1979-2003.
