South Dakota State Women Tops Preseason Conference Poll

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The South Dakota State women’s basketball team was picked to win the Summit League regular season trophy in the preseason poll released by the conference office Tuesday. Jackrabbit Brooklyn Meyer was named the Preseason Player of the Year.

Brooklyn Meyer is joined on the preseason first team by Paige MeyerHaleigh Timmer landed on the preseason second team.

Brooklyn Meyer, a junior, is the reigning Summit League Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. She is the league’s top-returning scorer as she averaged 18.7 points to go with 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per contest a season ago. She was .648 from the floor in conference games last season, ranking second in the league.

Paige Meyer was also Summit League first-team selection last season and is the reigning Summit League Tournament MVP. In conference games last season, Meyer averaged 13.7 points, 4.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds per contest. She was third on the conference charts in field goal percentage (.553) and second in assists (4.4) and assist/turnover ratio (1.7).

Haleigh Timmer missed the 2023-24 season with an injury but was a Summit League second-team selection and the Summit League Tournament MVP as a sophomore in 2022-23. She averaged 12.4 points and shot .506 from the field in conference games that season. Timmer also contributed 3.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists.

The Jackrabbits, who finished the 2023-24 League season with a 16-0 record, went unbeaten for the third time in four years a season ago and claimed the top spot in the poll after totaling 562 points and garnering 34 of the 36 first-place votes. Oral Roberts was the runner-up in the poll and received one first-place vote, followed by North Dakota State in third, also with one first-place vote.

South Dakota was picked to finish fourth and St. Thomas was selected fifth. Denver and North Dakota, who shared sixth place last season, were next in the poll, holding down and sixth and seventh place, respectively. Kansas City and Omaha rounded out the poll in eighth and ninth.

Points for the preseason poll were compiled on a 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, while all-league teams were compiled on an 11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. The top six vote-getters earned first-team honors and the next five were selected to the second team. The voting panel included the League’s nine head coaches, sports information directors and select media members. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes or team.
