Strong Second Quarter Lifts Jackrabbits

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State notched its seventh-straight win with a 73-55 result over South Dakota Saturday evening at Frost Arena. The Jacks remain unbeaten in Summit League action at 5-0 while the Coyotes fall to 2-3 in conference play.

Five 3-pointers in the opening quarter helped the Coyotes to a 21-14 lead after 10 minutes, but it was all Jackrabbits from the second quarter on. The Jacks put the clamps on on the defensive end and opened the second on a 15-0 run to lead 29-21 before USD’s first bucket. Ellie Colbeck drained a pair of 3-pointers during the nearly five-minute stretch.

SDSU led 36-28 at the halftime break and remained tough on defense through the second half for the 18-point victory.

Seven Jackrabbits finished with at least seven points, led by a season-best 15 from senior Tori NelsonBrooklyn Meyer added 13 and Mesa Byom chipped in 10 off the bench. Colbeck and Madysen Vlastuin each drained three 3-pointers for nine points apiece, followed by Paige Meyer with eight points and Jenna Hopp with seven.

Byom and Madison Mathiowetz paced SDSU on the glass, each posting eight rebounds. Paige Meyer tallied five rebounds and matched Brooklyn Meyer for a team-high four assists.

SDSU shot 48 percent in the contest and 41 percent from long range. Following the Coyotes’ 44 percent shooting in the opening 10 minutes, USD was held to just 23 percent the rest of the way.

Grace Larkins tallied 18 points and five rebounds for USD. Natalie Mazurek led all players with 10 rebounds.

NOTES

  • The Jackrabbits dominated the paint, outscoring the Coyotes 28-14.
  • Both teams turned the ball over 15 times, but SDSU had a 14-4 advantage over USD in points off turnovers.
  • SDSU now leads the all-time series 64-35.
