MITCHELL KERNELS
Mitchell Kernels girls tennis went 3-0 over the weekend, winning three home duals. The Kernels opened Friday with a 7-2 victory over Pierre, then returned to Hitchcock Park Friday night for a 9-0 sweep of Spearfish. Mitchell completed the weekend Saturday morning with an 8-1 win over Aberdeen Central, improving to 11-3 in duals this season. The Kernels returns to action on Thursday, hosting SF Washington at 4 p.m.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
Dakota Wesleyan football opened GPAC play with a 34-21 victory over Doane Saturday at Joe Quintal Field in Mitchell. The Tigers overcame an early 7-0 deficit and scored 34 of the final 41 points to improve to 1-1 overall. Quarterback Jed Jenson completed 19 of 25 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns, both to Caleb Kilbride. Landon Iverson added two fourth-quarter touchdown runs and finished with 70 yards on 15 carries. The Tigers travel to Waldorf next Saturday for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
No. 11 ranked Dakota Wesleyan volleyball closed its nonconference schedule with two more three-set sweeps Saturday at the College of Saint Mary Labor Day Classic in Omaha. The Tigers defeated Saint Francis (Ind.) 25-17, 25-16 and 25-18, then swept Ottawa (Kan.) 25-17, 25-19 and 25-20. The Tigers are now 11-1 with 10 three-set sweeps this season. After opening the season with 12 matches on the road or at neutral sites, DWU will make its home debut Wednesday against Dordt. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Christen Family Athletic Center
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
South Dakota State football lost at Northwestern on Saturday night 34-18. The Jacks were unable to score touchdowns in the red zone, as kicker Tristan Alvano converted on four field goals of 33 yards and under. After a 10-6 halftime lead, Northwestern scored on their final four drives of the second half, including an 80-yard TD with 1:15 remaining. SDSU QB Chase Mason was 23-for-48 for 285 yards and an interception. Grahm Goering finished with nine catches for 117 yards. The Jacks hosts New Haven next Saturday at 6 pm.
South Dakota State volleyball swept Bradley 3-0 Saturday in Brookings. The Jackrabbits won 26-24, 25-23 and 25-19 to improve to 4-3 on the season. Hannah Klein set a program record with five solo blocks in the three-set match. She also had 12 kills. Sylvie Zgonc led the Jacks with 20 kills on 38 swings and added 12 digs for her second double-double of the weekend. Rylee Martin finished with 24 assists. SDSU will compete at the Kansas Invitational next weekend starting with the 16th-ranked Jayhawks on Friday at 1 pm.

USD football won at Northern Colorado on Saturday night 38-23 to improve to 2-0 on the season. QB Austyn Modrzewski (Mud-Jet-Ski was 14-of-22 for 178 yards and two touchdowns, while the Coyotes ran for 214 yards as a team on 34 carries. USD will host Eastern Washington next Saturday at 1 pm.
USD rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Northern Iowa 3-2 in women’s volleyball Saturday in Vermillion. The Coyotes won the final two sets 25-21 and 17-15 to improve to 5-1 on the season. Sierra Pokharel set career highs with 32 digs and 11 assists for her first career double-double. USD competes at the CSU/Wyoming Tournament next week taking on Colorado State on Thursday at 8 pm CST.

The Minnesota Twins rallied from an early deficit to beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4 Saturday night. Ryan Jeffers hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth inning for his 14th of the season. Taj Bradley settled down after allowing two first-inning homers, finishing with four runs allowed on four hits in five innings. Four Twins relievers combined for four scoreless innings, with Yoendrys Gómez earning his 21st save. The win moved Minnesota within six games of Chicago in the AL Central and three and a half games of the third AL wild-card spot.
