Mitchell High School senior Asher Dannenbring staged a dramatic final-round comeback to capture the 2026 South Dakota Golf Association Junior Championship, outlasting Carter Peterson and Rylan Moran on the 10th hole of a grueling, sudden-victory playoff. Dannenbring surged from 22nd place after the opening round to shoot a tournament-low, 4-under-par 68 on Wednesday, forcing a three-way tie at 219 strokes before claiming the title. On the girls’ side, Aberdeen’s Olivia Braun secured the state championship with a three-day total of 221 strokes, sealing her victory with a final-round 2-under 70 to edge out defending champion Rylan Horning by four shots. Mitchell’s Anna Eliason (270) was 15th, while Mia Larson (272) was 17th.
PALACE CITY BASEBALL
Palace City Baseball Post 18 swept a doubleheader against Huron on Wednesday at Cadwell Park. Quinton Wilson pitched a complete game three-hitter to lead Post 18 to a 9-0 in game two of the night. Kaiden Allen and Ian Weber collected three hits each in the win. Weber drove in two runs while six other hitters had an RBI. Canon Moller and Dawson Adams had two hits apiece. Post 18 rallied to win the first game 10-4. Post 18 trailed by as many as four runs during the game. Post 18 made the score 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth after Jaxson Hartman singled, scoring two runs, Ian Weber singled, scoring one run, and Ethan Hegg drew a walk, scoring one run. Jacob Ebert earned the win allowing nine hits and four runs (two earned) over seven innings, striking out three and walking two. Hartman had three runs batted in and Carter McCormick had two hits for Post 18. Palace City Post 18 (12-11) hosts Parkston one game Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Palace City Post 18 Junior Legion lost both games at Aberdeen on Wednesday. Aberdeen limited Palace City to just two hits in an 11-1 victory in game one. In game two, Aberdeen scored nine runs in the second inning to win 17-7. A single by Oliver Raml gave Palace City a 4-2 in the top of the second. Nolan Widstrom and Madden Graves each collected two hits while Raml had two runs batted in. Palace City Junior Legion team will return to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Huron starting at 5 p.m.
Palace City Baseball 14U took both games of a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Post 15 on Wednesday. Three pitchers combined on a three-hitter in a 6-2 win in game one. Carter Buschbach had three hits including two doubles with James Klinger and Keniel Padilla each adding two hits each. Keniel Padilla drove in four runs on three hits including an inside the park home run to lead 14u to a 10-8 win in the finale. Carter Buschbach and James Klinger each had two hits in the victory. Palace City 14U will play in a tournament in Yankton this weekend.
Palace City Baseball 13U dropped two games to Sioux Falls Post 15 on Wednesday. Huntley Hillman collected three hits and two RBIs but Palace City 13u lost 7-4 on Wednesday. Post 15 was able to capitalize on 11 walks issued by Palace City Baseball. Post 15 then won the second game 13-9 after each team scored seven runs in the first inning. Palace City 13U will play in a tournament in Sioux Falls this weekend.

Registration is now open for the 2026 First Tee South Dakota youth golf program at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell. The program, open to kids ages 6 to 17, combines golf instruction with lessons focused on character development and life skills. Sessions will be held Mondays and Tuesdays throughout the summer, beginning June 29th, with class times divided by age group in the morning. The cost is $98, with financial assistance available to ensure all kids can participate. Equipment is provided, and families are encouraged to register early as space is limited.
