MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Black 14-and-under baseball swept Winner on Tuesday 9-7 and 13-2. Mitchell Black (16-11), which has now won four games in a row and six of its last eight, will compete in the Mid-Summer Classic tournament that starts Thursday in Sioux Falls.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Ryan Jeffers and Carlos Correa each had an RBI as the Minnesota Twins scored a pair of first-inning runs for the second straight game in a 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. Matt Wallner added a solo homer for the Twins in the third, which proved to be enough for right-hander David Festa, who went 5 1/3 innings and allowed a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Byron Buxton was hit in the hand in the first inning. He remained in the game initially but came out in the second inning. The Twins announced Buxton suffered a left-hand bruise. Minnesota goes for the three-game sweep of the Cubs today at 12:10 pm.

— Houston Astros starting pitcher Hunter Brown has been replaced on the American League All-Star roster with Minnesota Twins’ right-hander Joe Ryan. Brown, who last pitched Tuesday, became ineligible due to starting the Sunday before the All-Star Game. Ryan is 8-4 on the season with a 2.76 ERA, 116 strikeouts in 104 innings.

NBA
— The Phoenix Suns have signed star guard Devin Booker to a two-year, $145 million maximum contract extension through the 2029-30 season. The 28-year-old Booker has been one of the NBA’s best shooting guards, earning four All-Star appearances in 10 NBA seasons. Booker averaged 25 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds while shooting 46% from the floor last season for the Suns.

— Former Utah Jazz head coach Frank Layden has died at the age of 93. Layden coached the Jazz from 1981-89 and had 277 wins, third-most in franchise history. He’s the only coach in Jazz history to be named NBA coach of the year, earning the honor in 1984, when he also was honored as executive of the year.

TENNIS
— 38-year-old Novak Djokovic reached the semifinals of Wimbledon for a men’s-record 14th time with a 6-7, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 victory over No. 22 seed Flavio Cobolli to set up a showdown against No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner. Sinner beat 10th-seeded Ben Shelton 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.

MLB
— Major League Baseball plans to use its robot umpire technology for ball-strike challenges in Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Atlanta, another step toward possible regular-season use next season. Teams won 52% of their ball/strike challenges during the spring training test using the Automated Ball-Strike System. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said last month that the ABS system was likely to be considered for regular-season use by the 11-man competition committee.

— DJ LeMahieu was cut Wednesday by the New York Yankees with almost $22 million remaining on his contract, one day after the two-time batting champion got demoted to the bench. LeMahieu, who turns 37 on Sunday, was designated for assignment.  New York has seven days to trade or release LeMahieu, or send him outright to the minors, an assignment he would have the right to refuse in favor of free agency. The Yankees must pay him $6.6 million for the rest of this season and $15 million in 2026.

— The Detroit Tigers have the best record in the majors. Now they are tied for having the most All-Stars, too. Zach McKinstry was picked Wednesday to replace Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña, who has been dealing with a rib injury. McKinstry will join Detroit second baseman Gleyber Torres and outfielders Javier Báez and Riley Greene and staff ace Tarik Skubal, who also is among the candidates to start the All-Star Game on Tuesday night in Atlanta. The five All-Stars for Detroit is tied for the most with the Dodgers.

— Tampa Bay Rays slugger Junior Caminero announced Wednesday he will take part in the Home Run Derby on Monday in Atlanta, then learned hours later he will start at third base for the American League in the All-Star Game. Caminero, who turned 22 on July 5, leads all AL third basemen in homers during a breakout season. He is hitting .254 with 58 RBIs for the Rays.

MLB
— Jackson Chourio singled home the winning run in the 10th inning as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to beat the Dodgers 3-2 to complete their first home sweep of L.A. in franchise history. The Brewers’ only two previous sweeps of the Dodgers came at Los Angeles, in 2012 and 2017. Dodgers have lost six straight.

— Adrian Houser threw seven innings as the Chicago White Sox stopped Toronto’s 10-game winning streak, beating the Blue Jays 2-1. Chicago stopped the Blue Jays one win shy of their franchise record. Toronto has won 11 straight five times, most recently in 2015.

— Salvador Perez homered twice, while Jac Caglianone hit the longest measured homer by a Royals rookie, as Kansas City beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 to complete a three-game sweep.

— Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered twice and drove in four runs, while Cam Schlittler won his major league debut as the Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 9-6. Schlittler allowed three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts.

— José Ramírez homered for a third straight game as the Cleveland Guardians got a 4-2 win over the Houston Astros to complete a three-game sweep.

— Bryce Harper homered and doubled three times, while Jesús Luzardo struck out seven and gave up three hits in seven innings, as the Phillies defeated the Giants 13-0.

— Masataka Yoshida went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI in his season debut after undergoing shoulder surgery in October, as the Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep with a 10-2 win over the Colorado Rockies.

— Junior Caminero homered and scored twice as the Tampa Bay Rays beat Detroit 7-3 to end the Tigers’ winning streak at five games. Down 3-2 after five innings, the Rays scored four times in the sixth and Caminero led off the seventh with his 22nd homer.

— Andrew Abbott pitched seven innings of shutout ball a day after being named an All-Star, while Elly De La Cruz hit a pair of RBI doubles as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Marlins 7-2, snapping Miami’s franchise-record 11-game road winning streak. Abbott was named to the NL All-Star team on Tuesday, replacing Yoshi Yamamoto of the Dodgers.

— Ronald Acuña Jr. hit two home runs, including one to lead off the game against the Athletics, as the Atlanta Braves hit a season-high five homers in a 9-2 victory. The Braves had lost 13 consecutive games in the state of California.

— Arizona’s Geraldo Perdomo hit a grand slam, while All-Stars Eugenio Suárez and Corbin Carroll, as well as James McCann, also homered for the Diamondbacks in an 8-2 victory over the San Diego Padres.

— James Wood hit his 24th homer and Nathaniel Lowe added a three-run shot as the Washington Nationals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 to give interim manager Miguel Cairo his first victory. Cairo took over when Washington fired manager Dave Martinez on Sunday.

— Jorge Soler hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning, while Mike Trout went deep twice as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 11-8.
