MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball will be at SF Roosevelt on Thursday at 7 pm. Senior setter Addie Siemsen is just four assists shy of 1,000 for her career. The Kernels are 6-4 on the season with matches at Spearfish and vs. Douglas coming up on Saturday.

— Mitchell Kernels girls soccer ends the regular season at West Central on Thursday at 3:30 pm. The Kernels have a 4-9 record and are the 15th seed in AA.

— Mitchell Kernels boys soccer ends the regular season vs. James Valley Christian on Thursday at 5:30 pm. The Kernels have a 2-8-3 record and are 18th in seed points in AA.

— Mitchell Kernels football will be at Aberdeen Central this Friday night at 7 pm. Both teams are 1-4 on the season. Aberdeen Central is currently seventh in seed points, while the Kernels are 10th.

— Mitchell Kernels boys golf competes at the Class AA state tournament next week at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City on Monday and Tuesday. The Kernels finished seventh at the ESD conference meet on Monday in Brandon.

— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis competes at the Class AA state tournament in Sioux Falls on Thursday, October 9 and Friday, October 10. Mitchell finished second behind Harrisburg at the ESD conference meet earlier this week in Yankton.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Allison Meyerink has been named the GPAC’s Women’s Golfer of the Week for the second time this season. Meyerink placed first individually at the Mount Marty Invitational after shooting par during her second round and finishing the tournament at +5. Meyerink also placed 13th overall at the Mustang Invite in Marshall, Minnesota, against upper-level Division II competition with +11.

— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer won at Northwestern on Wednesday 3-1 to improve to 2-2-5 on the season. The Tigers host Doane on Saturday at 7 pm at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer was shutout on Wednesday 1-0 in a loss at Northwestern to fall to 4-6-1 on the season. The Tigers host Doane on Saturday at 5 pm at the Pepsi Cola Soccer Complex.

— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, (9-7 overall, 3-3 GPAC), hosts the College of St. Mary on Friday at 7:30 pm. The Tigers are in a four-way tie for fourth place in the GPAC with a 3-3 conference record.

— Dakota Wesleyan football is at Doane on Saturday at 1 pm. The Tigers, 1-4 on the season, are looking for their first conference win of the season with an 0-4 GPAC record. DWU has been outscored 137-36 in four GPAC games.

— Dakota Wesleyan women’s golf competes at the Mustang Derby at Whispering Creek Golf Club in Sioux City starting on Monday.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State volleyball will be at Denver on Thursday. The Jackrabbits are 7-3 overall on the season and 1-0 in the Summit League. The Jackrabbits opened conference play last week with a five-set win over Omaha. SDSU is three wins shy of reaching 1,000 in program history. Setter Rylee Martin enters the weekend four assists shy of reaching 1,500 for her career.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer host North Dakota on Thursday at 7 pm. SDSU’s unbeaten streak is at nine straight matches as the Jackrabbits have a 7-1-3 record and 1-0 in the Summit League.

— South Dakota State football starts Missouri Valley Conference play on Saturday with a road game at Youngstown State at 5 pm. The Jackrabbits are ranked No. 2 in the latest FCS media poll with a 4-0 record.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD football hosts Murray State on Saturday for homecoming at 2 pm.
— USD volleyball (9-5 overall, 1-1 Summit League) will be at Denver on Saturday at 2 pm.
— USD women’s soccer hosts North Dakota State on Thursday at 6 pm.

— Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored all the way home from first base on Austin Wells’ game-winning single in the eighth inning, as the New York Yankees extended their season Wednesday night with a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox in Game 2 of their AL Wild Card Series.

— Yoshi Yamamoto struck out nine as the Los Angeles Dodgers advanced to the National League Division Series with an 8-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The Dodgers broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning. Mookie Betts went 4 for 5 with three doubles. The Dodgers will face the Phillies in the NLDS starting Saturday in Philadelphia with Shohei Ohtani making his playoff debut on the mound. The teams last met in the postseason in 2009.

— Brayan Rocchio and Bo Naylor homered during a five-run eighth inning as the Cleveland Guardians evened their American League Wild Card Series against the Detroit Tigers with a 6-1 victory. George Valera also went deep as the Guardians forced a deciding game in the best-of-three series. The winner Thursday faces the Seattle Mariners in a Division Series. Javier Báez had two hits and an RBI for the Tigers, who were 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position and left 15 on base.

— Manny Machado hit a two-run homer, while the San Diego bullpen threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings as the Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 3-0 to send their NL Wild Card Series to a decisive third game. Dylan Cease struck out five in 3 2/3 innings before handing the ball to the bullpen.

NFL
— Rookie Dillon Gabriel will get his first NFL start on Sunday when the Cleveland Browns face the Minnesota Vikings in London. The Browns are benching Joe Flacco after he struggled to lead the offense in the first four games. Cleveland is 1-3 and ranked next-to-last in scoring, averaging 14 points per game. The team has scored 17 points or fewer in nine straight games. Gabriel will be the fifth different starting QB in 10 games. Gabriel was selected in the third round of April’s draft.

— Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has been medically cleared to return, paving the way for him to play Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. Coach Dan Quinn said Daniels was a full participant in the Commanders’ practice Wednesday. He was limited last week.

— The Baltimore Ravens remain tight-lipped about whether injured quarterback Lamar Jackson has a chance to play in Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. On Wednesday, Jackson did not practice because of a hamstring injury that he suffered in Sunday’s loss in Kansas City. Jackson has not missed a game with injury since the end of the 2022 season. Since 2018, Baltimore is 4-10 without Jackson.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— The Big Ten is exploring a groundbreaking $2 billion private equity deal that could reshape college sports. the deal would create a new entity, Big Ten Enterprises, to manage business ventures like media rights and sponsorships. In return, schools could receive massive upfront payouts, but they’d also agree to a 10-year extension of the conference’s grant of rights through 2046, ensuring league stability. While most schools support the move, Michigan and Ohio State are still in talks. A final decision is expected in the coming weeks.
