DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball has moved up five spots to No. 11 in the latest NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 poll. The Tigers are 8-1 on the season, with seven wins coming by sweep. DWU’s only loss came against No. 4 ranked Corban. The Tigers return to action Friday and Saturday at the Labor Day Classic in Omaha before opening GPAC play Sept. 9 against Dordt.
— Dakota Wesleyan is moving up its football home opener Saturday because of the heat. The Tigers will host Doane at 11 a.m. at Joe Quintal Field, two hours earlier than originally scheduled. The National Weather Service is forecasting a high of 95 degrees, with heat index values near 100. The game is the GPAC opener for both teams. DWU is coming off a 35-27 loss to Dakota State.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s golf will compete at the Siouxland Invitational in Sioux City on Tuesday and Wednesday.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer host Northern Iowa Area Community College on Wednesday at 5 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s golf returns to action September 14 at the Siouxland Invitational.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer hosts Nebraska Wesleyan on Wednesday, Sept. 16th at 6 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State volleyball fell to No. 1 ranked Nebraska in straight sets Wednesday night in Brookings, 25-18, 25-20 and 25-15. The match drew a state-record 5,113 fans to First Bank & Trust Arena. The Jackrabbits battled the national power throughout the first two sets. SDSU led 15-14 in the second set and was tied with Nebraska at 18 before the Huskers pulled away. South Dakota State’s 20 points in the second set were the most scored against Nebraska in a set this season. Sylvie Zgonc led the Jackrabbits with 12 kills, while Taylor Byl had a career-high five blocks. The Jacks host the SDSU Invitational this weekend as they take on Western Illinois and Northern Arizona on Friday, followed by Bradley on Saturday.
— South Dakota State’s men’s cross country has been picked to win its 11th consecutive Summit League championship. The Jackrabbits received five of seven first-place votes, finishing ahead of North Dakota in the preseason poll. SDSU’s women were picked second behind North Dakota. The Jackrabbit men are ranked 11th and the women 10th in the Midwest region.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer host Colorado College on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State football will be at Northwestern of the Big Ten on Saturday at 7 pm on the Big Ten Network.

— USD volleyball will host Utah Valley Thursday at 7 p.m. in its home opener.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run home run in the 12th inning, while Javier Báez added a bases-clearing double as the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 11-6 to salvage the final game of a three-game series. Brooks Lee had three hits and Josh Bell two for the Twins, who finished 4 for 21 with runners in scoring position, but scored three times in the eighth inning, two on a Royce Lewis single, to tie it at 5. The Twins start a three-game series in Chicago against the White Sox on Friday at 6:40 pm.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS
— Minnesota Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley says quarterback J.J. McCarthy is expected to be on the team’s Week 1 roster. McCarthy lost the starting job to Kyler Murray and appears to be third on the depth chart behind Murray and Carson Wentz. Teasley says McCarthy’s focus is to continue developing and supporting his teammates. The 2024 first-round pick has started just 10 games in his career and has dealt with multiple injuries.

— The NBA has suspended Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer for one year and fined the team $30 million for salary-cap circumvention. The Clippers must also forfeit five first-round draft picks from 2029 through 2033. Meanwhile, Kawhi Leonard was fined $700,000, while basketball operations president Lawrence Frank was suspended six months and business president Gillian Zucker was suspended one year. The NBA investigation centered on Leonard’s $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration. The Clippers strongly deny wrongdoing and say they will challenge the penalties.
GOLF
— Tiger Woods has had his driver’s license suspended for five years after reaching a plea deal in his Florida DUI case. Wood pleaded no contest to reduced charges of reckless driving and refusing a lawful test. He was also found guilty of careless driving and ordered to pay $1,500 in fines. Woods was arrested in March after his SUV clipped a trailer and rolled onto its side. He has not competed on the PGA Tour since July 2024.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is urging the SEC to take action against LSU if the Tigers roster former NFL players this season. Carr says the SEC should consider suspending or removing LSU from the conference. The dispute follows a Louisiana judge’s ruling blocking the SEC from punishing schools that use former NFL players. LSU plans to roster former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey is expected in court Thursday as the league challenges the ruling.
NFL
— Kirk Cousins will start at quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders when they open the season Sept. 13 against Miami. Head coach Klint Kubiak says Cousins earned the job after a strong offseason and training camp. The 15-year veteran signed a two-year deal with Las Vegas and will start ahead of rookie No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza.
— The Las Vegas Stadium Authority has approved $75 million in public funds for a $158 million upgrade at six-year-old Allegiant Stadium. The Raiders will cover the remaining cost. The project will improve access to the stadium’s north entrance with new pedestrian and event decks, a plaza and transportation improvements. Construction is expected to begin after the Raiders’ 2028 season, with completion targeted before the 2029 Super Bowl. The public money will come from surplus room tax revenue.

— Jackson Chourio homered as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 9-5, overcoming a shaky performance by Jacob Misiorowski. Misiorowski allowed five runs and five hits in four innings.
— Thomas Saggese hit a go-ahead, two-strike infield single in the 10th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-6. The Dodgers have lost six of eight. Shohei Ohtani struck out four consecutive times for the first time this season, including in the 10th with an automatic runner at third.
— Cam Schlitter gave up one run and two hits in eight innings as the New York Yankees scored five two-out runs in 10th in a 6-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
— Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a three-run homer and had a season-high five RBIs, while Dylan Cease scattered four hits over six innings and the Toronto Blue Jays routed the Cleveland Guardians 11-0. The Guardians remain in the third American League wild-card position, but their lead over Toronto, Baltimore and Texas was sliced to 1 ½ games.
— Jhonny Pereda had a two-run single as part of the second of Seattle’s two four-run innings on the day as the Mariners beat the Boston Red Sox 8-3.
— James McCann hit a solo homer in the eighth inning as seven Arizona pitchers combined for a shutout as the Diamondbacks avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0.
— Rookie Juan Brito hit his first career home run, while J.J. Bleday and Héctor Rodríguez also went deep as the Cincinnati Reds scored seven unanswered runs to beat the San Diego Padres 7-3.
— Brett Sullivan’s two-out, two-run single capped Colorado’s 11th-inning comeback, as the Rockies beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-5. Baltimore remains 1 ½ games back of Cleveland for the final AL Wild Card spot.
— Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a three-run homer to become the fastest player in major league history to reach 200 home runs and 200 stolen bases as the Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 9-0.
— Nelson Velázquez hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie, while Hayden Wesneski and two relievers combined on a three-hitter as the Houston Astros defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-0.
— Rookie Nick Morabito had a three-run double for his first major league hit helping the New York Mets beat the Tampa Bay Rays 10-4.
— Rafael Devers continued his hot hitting with his 32nd home run of the season as the San Francisco Giants scored twice in the 10th inning to defeat Pittsburgh 5-4.
— Henry Bolte had his first career multi-homer game, while Zack Gelof, Jonah Heim and Alika Williams also went deep as the Athletics scored nine unanswered runs to beat the Texas Rangers 9-2.
— Kyle Stowers homered and had an RBI single as the Miami Marlins beat the Kansas City Royals 9-6.
