MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell baseball, 9-6 on the season, hosts O’Gorman for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 5 pm. The pregame show starts at 4:45 pm on KORN News Radio FM 101.3/AM 1490 and KORNRadio.com.

— Mitchell track and field will host O’Gorman and Yankton on Tuesday at 4 pm at Joe Quintal Field.

— Mitchell Kernels softball, 4-4 on the season, had its game at Brookings on Monday postponed until Friday, May 16 The Kernels will host Yankton on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.

— Mitchell Kernels girls golf will be at the Pierre Invite at Hillsview Golf Course on Tuesday at 10 am.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s golf is tied with Doane at +68 after two rounds of the GPAC Championship in Cairo, Nebraska. Both teams have a 12-shot lead over third place Morningside. The Tigers Allison Meyerink is in first place individually at +11 and holds a one-shot lead. Junior Ashton Austreim sits in ninth place at +17. The third and final round of the GPAC women’s golf championships concludes later today.

— Dakota Wesleyan softball will be the No. 4 seed in the GPAC tournament and face No. 5 seed Concordia on Wednesday at 2 pm in Orange City, Iowa.

— Dakota Wesleyan baseball will be the No. 8 seed for the GPAC baseball tournament that starts on Wednesday. The double elimination format sees DWU play No. 1 seed Concordia at 6 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— The South Dakota State men’s golf team and Jackrabbit junior Tyler Seeling remain at the top of the team and individual leaderboards following the second round of the Summit League Golf Championship Monday in Mesa, Arizona. The Jackrabbits are six shot up on second place North Dakota State at -11. Seeling posted a 68 (-3) second round and holds a four-shot lead heading into the final day. The third and final round starts later this morning.

— South Dakota State freshman third baseman Nolan Grawe was selected Monday as the Summit League Baseball Player of the Week. Grawe recorded multiple hits in each of the Jackrabbits’ first five games in a busy week of action. He compiled a .480 batting average by going 12-for-21 with six RBI’s and seven runs scored.

— South Dakota State softball wraps up the regular season this weekend with a three-game series at North Dakota starting on Friday with a 2 pm doubleheader.

— South Dakota State baseball hosts Northern Colorado for a three-game series starting on Friday at 3 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD has announced a three-year contract extension for head volleyball coach Leanne Williamson that will run through the fall of 2030. Williamson, USD’s all-time wins leader, enters year 12 as the Coyotes head coach this fall and holds a career 231-101 record. Williamson led the Coyotes to their fifth Summit League Tournament Championship and fifth appearance at the NCAA National Tournament in 2024.

— USD softball ends the regular season with three home games vs. Kansas City starting on Friday.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Minnesota Twins had a season-high 17 hits, while Bailey Ober allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings as Minnesota rolled to an 11-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians. Six players had at least two hits, including Ryan Jeffers, who had a two-run homer and three RBIs. The Twins have won four straight and six of seven. Game two of the four game series is tonight at 5:10 pm in Cleveland.

NBA
— Jimmy Butler converted three free throws with 58 seconds left, grabbed the game-clinching rebound with 4 seconds to go and then made two more free throws on the way to 27 points in his return from a pelvic injury, sending the Golden State Warriors past the Houston Rockets 109-106 Game 4 to take a 3-1 lead in the first-round playoff series. Fred VanVleet missed a 3-pointer for Houston at the buzzer. The teams return to Houston for Game 5 on Wednesday.

— The Cleveland Cavaliers moved into Round 2 with the most lopsided series win in NBA playoff history. Donovan Mitchell scored 22 points, De’Andre Hunter added 19 as the Cavaliers led by as many as 60 points before beating the Miami Heat 138-83 on Monday night to sweep their Eastern Conference first-round series in four games. Cleveland won the series by a combined 122 points, one more than the previous record for series margin.

— Damian Lillard has a torn left Achilles tendon, confirming the Milwaukee Bucks’ worst fears after the seven-time all-NBA guard was helped off the court Sunday night. The Bucks announced the severity of Lillard’s injury after he had an MRI on Monday. The injury knocks Lillard out for the rest of the postseason and could put his status for next season in doubt as well.

NFL
— The Washington Commanders are set to return to the nation’s capital as part of an agreement between the organization and the District of Columbia government to build a new stadium as part of a project totaling nearly $4 billion. The District of Columbia and the Commanders reached an agreement to build a new football stadium in the city at the site the old RFK Stadium, the place the Commanders called home for more than three decades. It would open in 2030, with groundbreaking expected next year. The Commanders are contributing $2.7 billion, with the city investing roughly $1.1 billion over the next eight years for the stadium, housing, green space and a sportsplex on 170 acres of land. The stadium itself will take up just 16 of those acres.

— Saints quarterback Derek Carr has stated publicly for the first time that he has a shoulder injury. But Carr is stopping short of disclosing specifics about how or when it happened, or how it might affect his playing status this coming season. Carr was delivering a guest sermon at a Las Vegas church when he asserted that he has an MRI report to prove his shoulder is injured.

BASKETBALL
— Jimmer Fredette was announced Monday as the first managing director of USA Basketball’s 3×3 men’s national team, the same role that Grant Hill has with the senior men’s national team. Fredette, the former NBA lottery pick and 2011 AP college player of the year who retired as a player last week, will oversee the selection of players and coaches for major international competitions such as the FIBA World Cup and ultimately the Olympics.

MLB
— The Mets Brandon Nimmo hit a grand slam and matched a franchise record with nine RBIs, helping New York pound the Washington Nationals 19-5 on Monday. Nimmo also hit a three-run HR for his seventh career multi-homer game. The Mets have won nine of 11 overall to improve to a major league-best 20-9.

— Ryan O’Hearn hit a three-run home run off as the Baltimore Orioles held on for a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees. Aaron Judge, hitting a major league-leading .405, had two hits to extend his on-base streak to 25 games.

— Tommy Edman hit a two-run single in the 10th inning as the Dodgers blew a five-run lead before rallying to beat the Miami Marlins 7-6

— Jose Altuve hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning that sent the Houston Astros to an 8-5 win over the Detroit Tigers. Christian Walker also had a two-run shot in the fourth to begin Houston’s comeback from a 3-0 deficit.

— The Braves Bryce Elder pitched six innings, while Michael Harris II hit a tiebreaking double in the fifth as Atlanta beat the Colorado Rockies 6-3. Colorado has lost seven straight games and 15 of 16 to fall to 4-24, the worst record in the majors.

— Nick Martinez went six innings allowing just one run as the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 for their fifth straight win. Reds star Elly De La Cruz doubled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games, and Gavin Lux collected three hits, including two doubles, to run his hitting streak to a career-best 12.

— Tyler Soderstrom hit a two-run double as the Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 2-1.

— Right-hander Tyler Glasnow has been placed on the 15-day injured list by the Los Angeles Dodgers with right shoulder inflammation. Glasnow went on the IL one day after leaving his second straight start early due to shoulder discomfort on Sunday.
