STATE AMATEUR BASEBALL TOURNAMENT – MONDAY
— Alexandria advanced to the Class B state amateur baseball tournament quarterfinals with an 11-1, seven-inning win over Wynot (Neb.) on Monday night at Cadwell Park. Dakota Munger had a two-run homer in the first inning, while Ben Wilber and Pierce Smith added two-run doubles in the fourth inning to put Alexandria up 6-1. Preston Nedved from Platte added a three-run homer in the sixth as the Angels scored five more runs in the inning to take an 11-1 lead. AJ Wilber threw all seven innings for the Angels, allowing one run on four hits with eight strikeouts. The Angels improve to 17-3 and will face either Lennox or Volga in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Mitchell.
— Volga is moving on to quarterfinals after a 7-2 win over Lennox on Monday night. The Cormorants collected 12 hits and got seven innings from Trevor Olson, who allowed two runs while striking out seven. Austin Buysse had two hits and two RBIs, while Noah Puetz added three hits and an RBI. Volga improves to 16-7 and will face top-ranked Alexandria Thursday at 8 p.m. in Mitchell.

MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell High School graduate Olivia Prunty is one of two recipients of a $1,000 scholarship from the South Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and Daktronics. Prunty graduated with a 4.0 GPA at the top of her class and was a six-year varsity gymnastics letterwinner. She was the 2024 state vault champion, earned multiple state gymnastics placings and National All-American honors, and was twice named a KORN Elite Eight Athlete of the Year. Prunty will attend Dakota Wesleyan, where she’ll compete with the Cheer and Dance Team while pursuing a nursing degree.
— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis begins its regular season on Tuesday when they host Huron and Aberdeen Roncalli in a triangular scheduled for 10 am at Hitchcock Park.
— Mitchell Kernels soccer starts the season on Friday by hosting Huron. The girls match will be at 4 pm at Joe Quintal Field, followed by the boys match at 6 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan has been picked to finish third in the GPAC volleyball preseason coaches poll. The Tigers received 96 points, trailing defending national runner-up Northwestern with 120 points and Concordia with 109. Dakota Wesleyan went 20-12 overall and 10-6 in conference play last season, advancing to the NAIA final site. The Tigers return All-Americans Kayleigh Hybertson and Lizzie Tyler, along with all-conference performers Evy Knoblock and Karly VanDerWerff. DWU opens its season Friday at the Our Lady of the Lake Invite in San Antonio, Texas. The Tigers face Saint Francis (Ind.) at 9 a.m. and Montana Western at 5 p.m. Friday.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s soccer begins its season by hosting Manitoba on Thursday at 7 pm. SDSU finished 13-3-6 last season, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.
— South Dakota State volleyball will play an exhibition match at Iowa State on Friday at 4 pm. The Jackrabbits start the season at the Pepperdine Tournament in Malibu, California, on Friday, August 28th.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— Midco is giving $1.5 million to the University of South Dakota athletic department. The gift will transform the former Dome Club inside the DakotaDome into the new Midco Club. Upgrades will include windows that open to the stadium on gamedays, additional televisions, new furniture and refreshed finishes. Additional gameday seats will be available for purchase on a limited season basis.
— USD women’s soccer begins its season on Thursday at Northern Iowa at 4 pm. The Coyotes will be at Nebraska on Sunday at 1 pm.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Austin Martin had four hits including a home run, while Josh Bell also homered as the Minnesota Twins beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-5. Dean Kremer, in his second start with Minnesota since being brought over from Baltimore at the trade deadline, allowed one run and one hit in seven innings against his former team. He struck out seven. Martin led off the third with his solo homer to open the scoring. He singled in the first and reached on a bunt single in the seventh, part of a five-run inning for the Twins. Game two of the three-game series is Tuesday at 6:40 pm.
NFL
— The Dallas Cowboys and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams have agreed to a three-year, $105 million contract extension. The deal includes $101 million guaranteed and averages $35 million per year, second among NFL defensive tackles. Williams, who turns 29 this season, was acquired from the New York Jets last season. Dallas finished 7-9-1 in 2025 and missed the playoffs for the second straight year.
— Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy returned to training camp Monday, his first practice since his wife was shot at the couple’s Virginia home last month. Bieniemy’s wife, Mia, was shot July 26 and is in stable condition. The couple’s 27-year-old son, Elijah, has been charged with malicious wounding, firearm use in a felony and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. His court appearances have been delayed pending a mental health evaluation. Bieniemy returned to Kansas City earlier this year after previous stints with the Washington Commanders, UCLA and Chicago Bears.
— The Buffalo Bills are addressing concerns about partially obstructed views at their new $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium on a case-by-case basis. The concerns surfaced after fans attended the Bills’ first full practice at the new stadium Saturday. Some photos showed views blocked by railings, staircases and other structures. The Bills say they’ll review each complaint and make adjustments over the next six weeks before the Sept. 17 regular-season opener against Detroit. The stadium seats 60,108 fans.
MLB
— Major League Baseball has announced its 2026 postseason schedule, and barring rainouts, the World Series will finish in October for just the second time since 2020. The World Series opens Oct. 23, with a potential Game 7 scheduled for Oct. 31. The four best-of-three Wild Card Series will run Sept. 29 through Oct. 1. The Division Series begins Oct. 3, followed by the National League Championship Series Oct. 11 and the American League Championship Series Oct. 12.
— Tarik Skubal allowed three runs over five innings in his home debut for the Dodgers, while Shohei Ohtani scored the go-ahead run in the seventh as Los Angeles picked up a 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals. Skubal allowed four hits and struck out six in his second start for the Dodgers. Jac Caglianone homered and drove in all three runs off Skubal, who left trailing 3-2.
— Brandon Nimmo singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as the Texas Rangers beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 to snap a five-game road losing streak. Texas has won five of its last six overall and is a half-game behind AL West-leading Houston. The Rangers also lead the Twins and Tigers by 1 ½ games for the final AL Wild Card spot.
— Charles McAdoo homered and Jameson Taillon pitched four scoreless innings before leaving with an injury as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Boston 2-1 to hand the Red Sox their third loss in a row. Boston’s losing streak follows a nine-game winning streak that capped a franchise-record string of 27 victories in 30 games.
— Nolan Areando hit a grand slam in the first inning against his former team as the Arizona Diamondbacks jumped out to a big early lead for a 9-0 win over the Colorado Rockies. Arizona moved to eight games above .500 for the first time this season.
— Jackson Merrill hit a two-run homer to center field in the seventh inning, while Mason Miller earned his NL-leading 30th save to give the San Diego Padres a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. San Diego has won 13 of its last 17 games. The Padres remained a game out of the final National League playoff spot.
— Junior Caminero hit a three-run homer in an eight-run eighth inning as the Tampa Bay Rays rallied for a 10-6 victory over the Athletics. Caminero is second in the American League with 34 HR’s.
— Edmundo Sosa drove in three runs and Kyle Schwarber reached base four times as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5.
— Jeremy Peña hit a go-ahead single with none out in the 10th, while Isaac Paredes added a two-run double one out later as the Houston Astros rallied for a 6-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
— Brett Baty hit the first grand slam of his career as the New York Mets held off the Atlanta Braves 8-5 for their sixth win in seven games. Francisco Lindor was 3 for 5 with a home run.
