— Mitchell’s Asher Dannenbring leads the Warrior-Lynx Invite after Monday’s opening round at the Brandon Golf Course. Dannenbring shot a 1-under 70 and is the only golfer in the field under par. He had four birdies, including four of his first seven holes, and leads Sioux Falls Jefferson’s Trevor Rick by one stroke. The tournament concludes Tuesday at Willow Run Golf Course, with play starting at 2 p.m.
— Mitchell boys soccer hosts Spearfish on Friday at 4 p.m.
— Mitchell girls soccer hosts Spearfish on Friday at 6 p.m.
— Mitchell girls tennis, 3-1 in duals this season, returns home Monday to host Brookings at 10 a.m. and Sioux Falls Jefferson at 4 p.m. at Hitchcock Park.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer was picked to finish sixth in the 11-team GPAC preseason coaches’ poll. The Tigers received 58 points and finished 8-11 last season.
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball, 4-0 on the season, competes at the Siouxland Invitational this week. DWU takes on Corban (Ore.) on Friday at 10 am, followed by Mayville State at 4 pm in Sioux City.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer will host the University of Sioux Falls on Tuesday for an exhibition match at 3 pm at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer will be at Bellevue (Neb.) on Thursday at 5:30 pm to begin the regular season.

— South Dakota State women’s soccer hosts Washington State on Thursday at 7 p.m.

— USD women’s soccer will play at Green Bay on Thursday at 3 p.m.

— The South Dakota High School Activities Association says Rapid City Central High School is handling the aftermath of an altercation during an Aug. 14 soccer match against Brookings. Video shows a Rapid City Central player pushing, kicking and punching a Brookings player, leading to a 10-minute delay and an ejection. Executive Director Dan Swartos says Rapid City Central is conducting an internal investigation and will hold disciplinary hearings. Under state policy, an ejected player must miss the next contest.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Josh Bell’s two-run double started the scoring in a four-run first inning as the Minnesota Twins held on to beat the Atlanta Braves 4-2. The first six batters of the first inning reached against Atlanta starter Martín Pérez, with the first four in the order scoring. Royce Lewis and Kody Clemens followed with RBI singles. The Minnesota bullpen threw 4 2/3 shutout innings. Game two of the three-game series is Tuesday at 6:40 pm.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS
— The Minnesota Vikings have placed veteran safety and linebacker Jamal Adams on injured reserve after he suffered a right knee injury in Saturday’s preseason game. The three-time Pro Bowl selection is expected to have season-ending surgery. The Vikings signed cornerback Bryce Phillips to fill Adams’ roster spot.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Ohio State and Oregon are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the AP preseason college football poll, giving the Big Ten its first preseason 1-2 since 1961. The Buckeyes received 40 first-place votes, while Oregon had 14. Georgia, Notre Dame and Texas round out the top five, with defending national champion Indiana at No. 6. The SEC leads all conferences with nine ranked teams, including five in the top 10. The Big Ten has won three straight College Football Playoff championships and will seek an unprecedented fourth in a row.
NBA
— Los Angeles Lakers governor Jeanie Buss is legally challenging her siblings’ plan to sell the family’s remaining 17% stake in the team to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. Buss’ attorney says the sale cannot move forward without approval from the family trust’s co-trustees and argues the shares must maintain her minimum 15% ownership needed to remain controlling owner. The family says six siblings voted to sell the stake, with Buss reportedly the only sibling opposed. The deal would give Kushner and Iger about 83% of the Lakers if completed, but still requires NBA approval.
— The NBA has found no evidence that Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer funneled money through team sponsors to Kawhi Leonard to circumvent the salary cap. The league is instead examining whether the Clippers violated rules by introducing Leonard to team sponsors, including companies such as Aspiration and Daktronics. The 11-month investigation is ongoing, with the NBA and Clippers negotiating a possible resolution. Leonard’s trade from the Clippers to Toronto remains on hold because of the investigation.
PGA
— LIV Golf is ending its season one week early and canceling next week’s team championship in Michigan. The team champion instead will be crowned this week at LIV Golf Indianapolis, which begins Thursday. The 12-event schedule is the smallest in LIV history. Jon Rahm has already clinched his third straight individual season title. The league says it is preparing for a new version in 2027 after its Saudi funding ends this year. LIV says the new league could be player-owned and built around a sustainable business model.
NFL
— Von Miller is set to sign with his hometown Dallas Cowboys as the NFL’s active leader in sacks has agreed to a one-year contract for what will be his third team in three seasons. Miller is expected to arrive at training camp on Monday. Dallas has only two full practices remaining in its annual three-week California excursion. The Cowboys break camp before their second preseason game at Arizona on Saturday. Miller, who has 138 ½ sacks over 14 seasons, had nine sacks last year with Washington.
FLAG FOOTBALL
— The U.S. men’s flag football team won its sixth straight world championship Sunday, beating Italy 46-26 Germany. The U.S. women fell to Canada 27-20 in the women’s final, ending their run of three straight world titles. The tournament served as a qualifier for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The U.S. teams already qualified as the host nation, while Canada’s men and women and Mexico’s women earned Olympic spots through the tournament.
MLB
— MLB owners have unanimously approved the sale of the San Diego Padres to an investor group led by private equity billionaire José E. Feliciano and his wife and business partner. The deal values the Padres at a record $3.9 billion and is expected to close in the coming weeks. Padres CEO Erik Greupner and general manager A.J. Preller will remain in charge of day-to-day operations. Feliciano, who was born in Puerto Rico, will become baseball’s second Latino principal owner. Feliciano and Jones will hold an introductory news conference Aug. 24 at Petco Park.
— MLB’s first game at the Field of Dreams site in four years in Dyersville, Iowa, averaged 1.6 million viewers on Netflix on Thursday night, according to Nielsen. The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Minnesota Twins 7-1. This was the first year that Netflix has carried one of MLB’s special event games. Last year’s Speedway Classic in Bristol, Tennessee, between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds averaged 1.6 million viewers on Fox.
— Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his first career walk-off homer, a two-run shot in the 10th inning, as the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 7-5 win over the Chicago White Sox Monday night at Wrigley Field. It was the 30th homer of the season for Crow-Armstrong, one short of his career best from last year. With 31 stolen bases this year, he also has back-to-back 30-30 seasons.
— Willson Contreras and Mickey Gasper homered as all nine Boston starters drove in at least one run as the Red Sox defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-1. Boston, which scored in six straight innings, did not have a strikeout in the game and finished with 16 hits.
— Cristopher Sánchez struck out six over six innings and became baseball’s first 16-game winner as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Miami Marlins 6-5. Sánchez allowed one run on eight hits.
— Shohei Ohtani homered twice, while Blake Snell struck out five over six innings, as Los Angeles beat the Colorado Rockies 11-5. Max Muncy added a three-run homer for the Dodgers.
— Kevin McGonigle hit a two-run homer as the Detroit Tigers held off the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5 and moved into a three-way tie for the final AL wild-card spot with Texas and Baltimore.
— Right fielder Carson Benge threw out two San Diego runners at home plate on consecutive plays in the first inning, while fellow rookie A.J. Ewing cut down another from left field moments later as the New York Mets held on for a 2-1 victory vs. the Padres.
— Pinch-hitter Jonny DeLuca put the Rays in front with a two-run single in the seventh inning as Tampa Bay rallied for a 7-6 win over the Baltimore Orioles to avoid a four-game sweep.
— Elly De La Cruz had his first career walk-off hit in the 10th inning after Dane Myers hit a tying pinch-hit homer in the ninth as the Cincinnati Reds rallied past the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 to split a doubleheader. St. Louis won game one earlier in the afternoon 2-1.
— Bobby Witt Jr. had a two-run homer, an RBI double and scored four times, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 9-5 victory over the Athletics.
