MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell soccer will be at Brookings on Tuesday with the boys match at 4 pm, followed by the girls match at 6 pm. The Mitchell girls are 3-0 on the season with wins over Huron, Spearfish and Douglas, while the Mitchell boys are 2-1.
— Mitchell boys golf competes at the Pierre Invite on Tuesday starting at 10 am at Hillsview Golf Course.
— Mitchell girls tennis will compete at the Rapid City Invitational starting on Thursday at 1 pm. The Kernels are 7-2 in duals this season.
— Mitchell cross country will host the Mitchell Invite on Thursday at Wild Oak Golf Course at 4 pm.
— Mitchell volleyball starts its season on Friday at home vs. Sturgis at 5 pm. The Kernels will compete at the Huron Invite on Saturday with four matches on the schedule.
— Mitchell football starts its season on Friday at home vs. Brookings at 7 pm. The KORN Booth pregame show starts at 6 pm on KORN News Radio.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Allison Meyerink sits in first place after the first day of the Mt. Marty Invitational in Yankton. Meyerink shot a +3 (75) to hold a four-shot lead. The Tigers are seventh as a team at +68. Morningside at +42 has a five-shot lead over Concordia. The final day of the Mt. Marty Invitational begins Tuesday at 10 am.
— No. 16 ranked Dakota Wesleyan volleyball travels to Madison on Wednesday to face Dakota State at 7 pm. The Tigers are 7-1 on the season.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer will be at Bellevue (Neb.) on Saturday at 4:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer is back in action on Friday at Nebraska Wesleyan at 7 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan football starts its season on Saturday at Dakota State at 7 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s soccer returns home Thursday to host Western Illinois at 7 p.m.
— South Dakota State volleyball starts its season on Friday vs. Sacramento State at 5 pm CST. The Jackrabbits will play three matches as part of the Pepperdine Tournament. SDSU plays the host Pepperdine on Saturday at 7 pm CST, followed by Villanova on Sunday at Noon CST.
— South Dakota State football starts its season on Saturday vs. Stetson at 6 pm. The Jackrabbit pregame show starts at 4 pm on KORN News Radio.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s soccer will be at Northern Colorado on Thursday at 8 pm.
— USD volleyball starts its season on Friday at the Drake Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, facing the host Drake at 6 pm. The Coyotes take on Milwaukee on Saturday at 3 pm, followed by DePaul on Sunday at 11 am.
— USD football starts its season on Saturday vs. Central Connecticut State at 1 pm.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Zebby Matthews allowed six hits and one run over seven innings, while Josh Bell drove in three runs as the Minnesota Twins beat the Athletics 9-6. Byron Buxton had three hits and scored four times, rookie Kaelen Culpepper had four hits for the first time in his 14th game, and Ryan Kreidler homered to help the Twins snap a three-game losing streak. Twins closer Yoendrys Gómez allowed four runs in the ninth inning before Andrew Morris came in for the one out save. The Twins stayed two games back of Cleveland for the final AL Wild Card spot. Game two of the series is Tuesday at 8:40 pm.
NFL
— San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York has pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges in Ohio. York was arrested Sunday and originally charged with engaging in prostitution, but prosecutors amended that charge to disorderly conduct. He also was charged with possessing criminal tools for using his phone to respond to an undercover online prostitution advertisement. York was sentenced to one day in jail, credited with time served, and fined $1,150. The NFL says it will review the case.
— Deshaun Watson will be the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback to open the season, beating out Shedeur Sanders. Head Coach Todd Monken says he reviewed the entire offseason, training camp and preseason before deciding on Watson. Watson has started just 19 games for Cleveland since signing a five-year, $230 million contract. He has dealt with injuries and a season-long suspension. He has not played a full season since joining the Browns.
COLLEGE
— The SEC says athletes who leave college sports and sign professional contracts should not be allowed to return to college competition. The statement comes as former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright seeks to return to LSU after signing with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns. A Louisiana judge also cleared former NBA player R.J. Luis Jr. to play for LSU despite signing NBA contracts. The SEC says allowing professionals back creates competitive concerns and reduces opportunities for current college and high school athletes.
WNBA
— The Golden State Valkyries beat the Minnesota Lynx 80-66 Monday night for the first victory over Minnesota in franchise history. Golden State improved to 26-11, while Minnesota fell to 31-8. The Lynx had won 15 of their previous 16 games. Minnesota will be at Atlanta on Sunday.
— Angel Reese set a WNBA record on Monday night with 26 rebounds in the Atlanta Dream’s 78-71 win over the Los Angeles Sparks. Reese also broke the WNBA single-season rebounding record, reaching 458 rebounds this season. She leads the WNBA in rebounding at 12 per game.
TENNIS
— Roger Federer is returning to the U.S. Open this week, but the 20-time Grand Slam champion says he has no plans to return to professional tennis. The 45-year-old Federer will play an exhibition Tuesday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium, his first appearance at the U.S. Open since 2019. He’ll play one set of singles against Andy Roddick and a set of doubles with John McEnroe against Roddick and Andre Agassi. Federer retired in 2022 after a series of knee injuries. He says he hasn’t played a competitive singles set in about five years. Federer won five consecutive U.S. Open titles from 2004 through 2008.
MLB
— The Houston Astros and general manager Dana Brown have mutually agreed to part ways, despite the team being tied for first place in the American League West. Brown’s contract was set to expire after the season. He had been Houston’s general manager since January 2023 and helped the Astros win two division titles. Senior adviser Jeff Bagwell and assistant general managers Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey and Connor Huff will handle Brown’s duties, with owner Jim Crane overseeing baseball operations during the transition.
— Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo says three-time All-Star Ketel Marte could return to the lineup next week, roughly two weeks after his unexplained disappearance from the team. Marte has been on the 10-day injured list with mild inflammation in his left knee and took batting practice Monday. Lovullo says the team is targeting an Aug. 31 return. Marte has not explained his absence to teammates. Arizona is two games behind San Diego for the final National League wild-card spot.
— Corey Seager had three hits and three RBIs, while Jake Burger and Wyatt Langford homered to lead the Texas Rangers to an 11-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Texas moved a half-game ahead of Houston to take sole possession of first place in the AL West.
— Michael Conforto and Carson Kelly hit back-to-back homers, while Kevin Gausman gave up just three hits over seven shutout innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-0. The Cubs moved to 5 ½ games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL Central lead.
— Parker Messick pitched six innings of one-run ball and Austin Hedges hit a two-run homer in the Cleveland Guardians’ 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
— Boston’s Anthony Seigler hit a go-ahead triple in the ninth inning as the Red Sox beat the Miami Marlins 4-2. Boston has won 19 of 20 against teams with records of .500 or better.
— Cal Raleigh hit three home runs as the Seattle Mariners ended Philadelphia’s season-best nine game winning streak with a 9-2 victory over the Phillies. Julio Rodríguez launched a three-run homer in the first and Raleigh added a two-run drive to cap a five-run inning against Phillies ace Zack Wheeler
— Jonathan Aranda homered and Drew Rasmussen gave up three hits in six innings as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1. Tampa Bay had lost seven of its last 10, but never trailed against the Tigers, who have lost six straight and nine of 10.
— Nick Gonzales led off the 12th inning with an RBI single as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Diego Padres 3-2. San Diego’s eight-game home winning streak ended.
— Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer in the second inning as the San Francisco Giants snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Cincinnati Reds 5-0.
— CJ Abrams had the go-ahead RBI in a five-run fifth inning as the Washington Nationals defeated Colorado 13-3 to send the Rockies to their season-worst seventh consecutive loss.
