SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State’s Katherine Jones was selected as The Summit League Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Jones helped the Jackrabbits secure two shutout victories during the past week that saw SDSU play three away matches. Jones was a staple on the Jackrabbit back line in the Jackrabbits’ 2-0 win over Northern Colorado on Aug. 19, as well as in SDSU’s 3-0 victory Sunday at Wyoming.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Atlanta’s Matt Olson hit a three-run homer and a two-run double in the first two innings against the Twins Bailey Ober before the game was stopped by a thunderstorm, giving Max Fried and the Braves a 10-6 win over Minnesota. Fried endured the 86-minute delay for his first win since June 23, finishing five innings and allowing only one earned run. The Braves had a 9-1 lead after the top of the second inning before the weather delay. Game two of the three game series is tonight at Target Field at 6:40 pm.

NFL
— CeeDee Lamb’s monthslong holdout with the Dallas Cowboys is over as the All-Pro receiver is a close second to Justin Jefferson as the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Lamb and the Cowboys agreed Monday on a $136 million, four-year contract with $100 million guaranteed. Lamb missed all of training camp in California after also skipping mandatory minicamp in the offseason. The June absence at the club’s headquarters started a day after Jefferson agreed with the Minnesota Vikings on a $140 million contract that made him the highest-paid non-QB. The average annual value of Lamb’s extension is $34 million, which is roughly twice what the 25-year-old will make in the final year of his rookie deal this season.

— The Green Bay Packers on Monday traded a 2025 seventh-round draft pick to the Tennessee Titans for backup quarterback Malik Willis. Willis is expected to back up Jordan Love this season. The Packers held a summerlong competition between second-year pro Sean Clifford and rookie Michael Pratt to serve as Love’s backup. Willis would have been the No. 3 quarterback for the Titans behind starter Will Levis and backup Mason Rudolph. Willis was third round pick out of Liberty in 2022.

— Baltimore Ravens offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris died Sunday morning at the age of 70. D’Alessandris had been hospitalized for the past two weeks with what the Ravens had described as “an acute illness” that required ongoing treatment for an extended period. Ravens coach John Harbaugh said at the time that D’Alessandris had surgery early in the summer, and his illness was a complication from it. With a coaching career that spanned 45 years, D’Alessandris was Baltimore’s offensive line coach since 2017.

— Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris said he is hopeful a new stadium can open in time for the 2030 season. The team’s contractual obligations at Commanders Field end in 2027, but the Commanders can continue playing there indefinitely. Harris and his ownership group are hopeful the site currently occupied by RFK Stadium, in downtown Washington, will be under consideration, but the federal government must first sign off on transferring the land to the District of Columbia. The U.S. House of Representatives has given its approval, but the Senate has not.

MLB
— Former Blue Jays and current Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen didn’t just play for both teams in the same game, a first in Major League Baseball history. He played for both teams in the same inning. Jansen became the only player ever to appear on both sides of a baseball box score when he took the field for Boston on Monday in the resumption of a rain-delayed game he started for Toronto in June, before he was traded to the Red Sox. Playing for Toronto on June 26, Jansen fouled off the only pitch he saw from Boston’s Kutter Crawford in the second inning before the tarps were called out. On July 27, Jansen was traded from Toronto to Boston for three minor leaguers.

NASCAR
— NASCAR will take its Cup Series international for the first points-paying race outside the United States with a June stop in Mexico City. NASCAR and track officials have a Tuesday morning news conference to announce the June 15 race. NASCAR’s second-tier Xfinity Series and NASCAR Mexico Series will be part of the weekend. The Xfinity Series ran in Mexico City from 2005 to 2008. The Cup Series has never gone international in the modern era for anything besides exhibition races. NASCAR held exhibitions in Japan between 1996 and 1998, and once in Australia in 1988.

— Austin Dillon’s overly aggressive victory at Richmond Raceway won’t land him a spot in the Cup Series playoffs. A NASCAR appeal officer on Monday upheld the sanctioning body’s decision to revoke Dillon’s automatic postseason berth that came with his controversial win at Richmond on Aug. 11. Dillon intentionally wrecked Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano coming out of the final turn to take the checkered flag for his first victory in two years. Three days later, NASCAR announced that Dillon’s victory “crossed a line.” Richard Childress Racing appealed. A NASCAR “final appeal officer” upheld the penalties and said race data indicated “that more likely than not a rule violation did occur.”

TENNIS
— Coco Gauff’s U.S. Open title defense is off to a successful start. The 20-year-old American won her first round matchup 6-2, 6-0 in just 66 minutes on Monday. Gauff had lost two matches in a row on hard courts before arriving in New York, where she won last year’s championship for her first Grand Slam trophy.

MLB
— Salvador Perez hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs as the Kansas City Royals completed a doubleheader sweep of Cleveland, beating the Guardians 9-4 on Monday night to pull within one game of first in the AL Central. The Royals won the day game 4-3 as Bobby Witt Jr.’s 27th homer snapped a tie in the eighth inning. Kansas City was nine games back in early July, but the Royals have chipped away at Cleveland’s lead by posting an AL-best 22-13 record since the break. The Guardians, who have led the division since April 14, dropped to 0-8 in doubleheaders this season.

— Bryce Harper hit a game-ending RBI single in the 10th inning off Houston closer Josh Hader as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Astros 3-2 in a matchup of division leaders. Brandon Marsh homered for Philadelphia, which won its third straight. The Phillies entered leading the NL East by six games over Atlanta, while Houston began play 4 1/2 games ahead of Seattle in the AL West.

— Gleyber Torres hit a leadoff homer, while Aaron Judge made a spectacular defensive play as the Yankees beat Washington 5-2 to spoil the major league debut of Nationals prospect Dylan Crews. Judge added his 1,000th career hit as New York won for the fifth time in six games, moving two ahead of idle Baltimore atop the AL East. Crews, the third-ranked prospect in baseball, batted second for Washington and went 0 for 3 with a walk. The outfielder was drafted second overall last year out of LSU.

— Dansby Swanson hit a grand slam to cap an eight-run sixth inning as the Chicago Cubs had eight stolen bases, their most in a game in more than 100 years, on the way to an 18-8 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs last had eight steals in 1913. Rookie center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong led the way with three stolen bases as the Cubs won for the seventh time in 10 games.

— San Diego’s Manny Machado homered and drove in three runs, while rookie Jackson Merrill also had three RBIs as the Padres defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 in the opener of a four-game series.

— Seattle’s Randy Arozarena smacked a three-run homer against his former team, while Bryce Miller allowed two hits and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts over seven innings as the Mariners beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1.

— Toronto’s George Springer hit a three-run homer, his second of the day, to key a five-run fifth inning as the Blue Jays took two games from Boston by posting a 7-3 victory to send the Red Sox to their fifth straight loss. In the first game during the afternoon, seven Toronto pitchers combined on a four-hitter to beat the Red Sox 4-1 in the completion of a game that was suspended by rain in June.

— Spencer Torkelson hit a three-run homer during a five-run seventh inning as the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 to complete a four-game sweep and drop the majors’ worst team to 31-101. The White Sox have lost eight of nine and have four wins in their past 38 games.

— Ryan McMahon hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning as the Colorado Rockies (49-83)  beat the Miami Marlins (47-84) 3-2 in a matchup of the NL’s worst teams.

WNBA
— Indiana’s Kelsey Mitchell scored 29 points, including the clinching free throws with 5 seconds left, while Caitlin Clark added 19 points as the Fever disappointed a record Atlanta crowd by holding off the Dream 84-79. The game was moved to the home of the Atlanta Hawks and set an attendance record of 17,608, surpassing the crowd that attended the last game against the Fever (17,575).
