SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State enters the 2026 football season ranked No. 3 in the preseason FCS Top 25 poll. The Jackrabbits trail defending national champion Montana State and Montana after finishing 9-5 last season and making their 14th straight FCS playoff appearance. SDSU has now been ranked in 190 consecutive polls dating back to 2012. The Jackrabbits open the season Aug. 29 at home against Stetson and will face five ranked Missouri Valley Football Conference opponents during the regular season.
SWIMMING
— Mitchell swimmers wrapped up the long-course season with an impressive showing at the Futures Swim Meet in Madison, Wisconsin. Five of South Dakota’s 10 swimmers were from Mitchell, and each qualified for at least one championship final. Mitchell High School senior Colin Pickett led the way, setting four South Dakota state records while posting personal best times in all of his individual events. Pickett also earned two U.S. Open qualifying cuts and added to his Junior Nationals qualifying times. The Sioux Falls Swim Team men’s relay, anchored by three Mitchell swimmers, finished in the top eight in every relay event it entered.
YOUTH BASEBALL
— Platte-Geddes captured the South Dakota VFW junior varsity state baseball championship Sunday in Estelline, finishing the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record. Platte-Geddes defeated Corsica/Stickney 4-2 in the semifinals before edging Tri-Valley 1-0 in a championship game rematch. Salem also reached the semifinals after winning its pool before falling to Tri-Valley 14-9.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Minnesota Twins added bullpen help on Monday acquiring veteran reliever Jeff Hoffman from the Toronto Blue Jays. Minnesota sent three prospects to Toronto, including No. 7 prospect Dasan Hill. Hoffman owns a 3.94 ERA this season but has posted a 1.21 ERA since the start of June. The Twins also held onto catcher Ryan Jeffers and outfielder Trevor Larnach despite trade speculation, completing four deadline deals for pitching without moving any players from their big league roster. Minnesota starts a three-game series at Kansas City on Tuesday at 6:40 pm. The Twins start the week one game behind Cleveland for the final AL Wild Card spot.

— Major League Baseball’s trade deadline brought a flurry of moves on Monday. The Boston Red Sox landed All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from Baltimore, while the Philadelphia Phillies added three-time batting champion Luis Arraez. San Diego strengthened its rotation with Robbie Ray from San Francisco and Casey Mize from Detroit. Other notable deals included the Astros acquiring OF Daulton Varsho from Toronto, the Cubs landing SP Clay Holmes from the Mets, and the Yankees picking up outfielder Heliot Ramos from the Giants.
— Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says the team remains optimistic Aaron Judge will return this season but admits there’s no guarantee. Judge has been sidelined since early June with a stress fracture in his right first rib and has not yet resumed baseball activities. Cashman says the next imaging scan will determine when Judge can begin ramping up for a return. In the meantime, New York added first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. and outfielder Heliot Ramos at the trade deadline to help an offense that has struggled without Judge.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Miami head football coach Mario Cristobal has agreed to a long-term contract extension with the Hurricanes. The school has not announced details of the new deal, but Cristobal was entering the fifth year of a 10-year contract worth a reported $8 million annually. Cristobal has helped rebuild Miami’s program since taking over in 2022, leading the Hurricanes to the national championship game last season, where they lost to Indiana. Miami finished 13-3 in 2025. Cristobal is 35-19 in four seasons at his alma mater.
— A federal judge has clarified her ruling that gave some college athletes an extra year of eligibility, limiting the impact on the NCAA’s new “five for five” rule. U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney said her decision applies only to athletes who graduated high school in 2022 and missed out on the NCAA’s upcoming five-season eligibility rule. The ruling does not allow football players who signed professional contracts this summer to return to college. The NCAA has filed an appeal, saying the decision could create confusion across college sports. Teams are now weighing whether to bring back eligible athletes while the appeal moves forward

— U.S. Soccer has signed men’s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino to a new four-year contract that keeps him in charge through the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Pochettino guided the Americans to the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, where the U.S. won three matches and advanced from the group stage with a game to spare before losing to Belgium.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Notre Dame and Southern California have agreed to resume their college football rivalry starting in 2030. The schools announced Monday that they signed a four-game home-and-home agreement. The series will kick off August 31st, 2030, in Los Angeles, with USC traveling to South Bend the following year. Games in 2032 and 2033 will also take place during the first three weeks of the season. The annual series, which dates back to 1926, was put on hold after the 2025 season following USC’s move to the Big Ten.

— Seiya Suzuki, Carson Kelly and Kevin Alcántara each hit a two-run homer as the Chicago Cubs handed the Los Angeles Dodgers their fourth consecutive loss with a 10-5 victory. Michael Busch also drove in three runs.
— Alec Burleson hit three two-run homers, including one that capped a seven-run eighth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees 13-7 after blowing a six-run lead.
— Toronto’s Alejandro Kirk homered as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Houston 3-1, snapping the Astros’ six-game winning streak.
— Philadelphia’s Derek Hill hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning and Bryce Harper added a two-run shot to lift the Phillies to their third straight win, 6-3 over the Washington Nationals.
— Spencer Horwitz hit a three-run double as the Pittsburgh Pirates extended their dominance over the Brewers this season, beating Milwaukee 4-3 in the opener of a four-game series. Pittsburgh has won six of seven games against the NL Central-leading Brewers this season.
— Arizona’s Tim Tawa hit a three-run homer and Brandon Pfaadt carried a shutout into the seventh inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 5-1 in the opener of a 10-game homestand. The victory moved the Diamondbacks two games ahead of San Diego in the NL wild-card race. Arizona is tied with Philadelphia for the final two NL playoff spots.
— Junior Caminero hit two home runs, while Jonathan Aranda had four hits as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Colorado Rockies 13-9 . Ian Seymour allowed two runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts in six innings.
— Jung Hoo Lee hit two solo homers and drove in three RBIs, while Logan Webb pitched six shutout innings as the San Francisco Giants beat the Texas Rangers 5-1. The Rangers have lost a season-high six straight games and haven’t held a lead in the last 40 innings. They trail first-place Houston by 2 ½ games in the AL West and are two games out in the wild-card race.
