MITCHELL
— Mitchell is holding an Activity Meeting on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center. The meeting will cover important topics like the code of conduct, expectations, academic requirements, physical forms, travel expectations, and out-of-season training. All students in grades 6 through 12, as well as their guardians, who want to participate in any activity are encouraged to attend.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State football is ranked third in the preseason FCS media poll released on Monday. SDSU has now been ranked in the top 25 for the past 175 weeks dating back to October of 2012. SDSU is scheduled to face five teams ranked in the preseason top 25 during the upcoming 2025 season, starting with a home game against No. 15 Sacramento State on Aug. 30. North Dakota State collected 54 of the 56 first-place votes, while Montana State received one first-place vote to finish second. USD came in fourth, while fellow Missouri Valley Football Conference team Illinois State is sixth.

CLASS B AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL STATE TOURNAMENT
Parkston 11, Groton 6 –
Parkston scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Carter Sommer went 3-for-5 with three RBI’s, while Kash Neugebauer had a pair of hits, two RBI’s and two walks for Parkston. Taite Klumb threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits with seven strikeouts. Parkston finished runner-up during last season’s Legion baseball tournament.

Dakota Valley 14, Dell Rapids 8 – Dakota Valley scored six runs in the fourth inning to knock off the defending champion Dell Rapids.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Kerry Carpenter homered in a three-run sixth inning as the Detroit Tigers rallied for a 6-3 win over the Minnesota Twins. Wenceel Pérez and Dillon Dingler also homered for the Tigers, while Ryan Jeffers, Trevor Larnach and Matt Wallner had homers for Minnesota. Detroit has won six of its last eight games since losing 12 of 13. The Twins have lost five of six. Game two of the three game series is tonight at 5:40 pm.

 MLB
— Kyle Schwarber homered twice, including a grand slam in Philadelphia’s eight-run sixth inning, as the Phillies pounded the Baltimore Orioles 13-3. Schwarber finished with six RBIs, running his major league-leading total to 94 on the season. The Phillies increased their NL East lead to 1 1/2 games over the Mets, who lost 7-6 to Cleveland in 10 innings.

— Josh Jung hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning, after Joc Pederson’s tying pinch-hit homer in the ninth, as the Texas Rangers beat the New York Yankees 8-5 for their seventh consecutive home win.

— Pete Alonso hit his 251st career homer to pull within one of Darryl Strawberry’s New York Mets franchise record, but the Cleveland Guardians earned a 7-6, 10-inning win after squandering a five-run lead.

— Isaac Collins hit a three-run homer, while Quinn Priester allowed just two hits over seven innings as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1.

— TJ Friedl hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh inning as the Cincinnati Reds held off the Chicago Cubs for a 3-2 win. Dansby Swanson hit his 17th homer for the Cubs, who fell three games behind NL Central-leading Milwaukee.

— Pinch-hitter Yohel Pozo delivered a tiebreaking RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning, as the St. Louis Cardinals hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sonny Gray allowed just one hit over seven innings for the Cardinals.

— Jarren Duran hit a three-run homer and Brayan Bello pitched six innings, allowing an unearned run and six hits, helping the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 for their sixth consecutive victory.

— Bo Bichette homered twice and drove in six runs, while Ernie Clement had a career-best five of Toronto’s season-high 25 hits as the Blue Jays beat the Colorado Rockies 15-1. Toronto (66-48) is tied with Detroit for the best record in the American League.

— Jason Alexander pitched six scoreless innings, while Jeremy Peña doubled twice as the Houston Astros used a five-run fourth inning to beat the Miami Marlins 8-2.

— Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. each drove in two runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 6-2. Tyler Locklear and Alek Thomas each hit a solo homer for Arizona.

— Jo Adell hit a two-run homer, while Yusei Kikuchi allowed four hits in six innings as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1.

— Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s fielder’s choice scored Jack Suwinski with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Texas holds the top spot in the USA Today preseason coaches football poll released on Monday. The Longhorns received 28 of the 67 first-place votes. Defending national champion Ohio State is No. 2 after receiving 20 first-place votes as the Buckeyes are followed by No. 3 Penn State, No. 4 Georgia and No. 5 Notre Dame. Texas leads nine Southeastern Conference teams in the poll. Clemson is the top team from the Atlantic Coast Conference at No. 6, with No. 7 Oregon, No. 8 Alabama, No. 9 LSU and No. 10 Miami. Arizona State is the highest-ranked Big 12 team at No. 11. Boise State, at No. 25, is the only Group of Five team in the poll. The Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll will be released on Aug. 11.

— Former University of Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley has announced his 2026 Republican bid for the U.S. Senate in Georgia. He is running against Democratic incumbent Jon Ossoff. Dooley has never held elective office and plans to run as a political outsider. Dooley’s candidacy has already faced criticism for his lack of conservative credentials.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— The NCAA has decided not to expand the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments beyond 68 teams in 2026. Discussions about possibly expanding to 72 or 76 teams for the 2027 tournaments remain ongoing. NCAA President Charlie Baker believes adding teams could enhance the tournament’s value. He mentioned having productive talks with TV partners CBS and Warner Bros. Their current deal, valued at about $1.1 billion annually, runs through 2032.

NFL
— Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley has declined an invitation to join Donald Trump’s council on sports, fitness, and nutrition. The council is being revitalized under an executive order that also reestablishes the Presidential Fitness Test for American children. Barkley explained Monday that he declined due to a busy schedule.

— Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman was released from police custody Monday afternoon and will not face criminal charges after he was arrested Friday on a felony weapons charge. The 32-year-old Perryman had been held without bail since Friday night after police pulled him over for vehicle code violations. During a search of his vehicle, police discovered five firearms in his car, including two assault-style rifles. Perryman was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, but the Los Angeles District Attorney decided not to file criminal charges.

— The Cleveland Browns are signing quarterback Tyler Huntle, adding depth with multiple passers nursing injuries. Cleveland is holding a quarterback competition among four players: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. However, all but Flacco have recently been sidelined because of injuries. Pickett hasn’t practiced fully since injuring a hamstring July 26, and Gabriel was limited Monday because of hamstring tightness. Sanders was held out of team drills Saturday because of arm soreness but returned to full participation Monday.

— Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane says that he isn’t sure how long the contract standoff with James Cook will last after the running back declined to participate in practice for a second straight day. This marks the second day Cook has not participated in practice in the fourth-year player’s next step in escalating his bid to extend the final year of his contract.

MLB
— Aaron Judge could be back in the New York Yankees’ lineup as early as tonight when he is eligible to come off 10-day injured list. He hasn’t played since July 25 because of a flexor strain in his right elbow. Judge hit off Yankees minor league pitchers at the team’s complex in Tampa for the second day in a row Monday, then was in Texas for the series opener. Manager Aaron Boone says the Judge will be the designated hitter when he returns.

NBA
— San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox has agreed to a four-year, $228 million contract extension. Fox has career averages of 21.5 points and 6 assists over eight NBA seasons. He is currently under contract for the final year of his five-year, $163 million deal. The extension starts in the 2026-27 season.
