COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Indiana is the College Football National Champion after completing an undefeated season with a 27–21 win over Miami on Monday night. Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza delivered the defining moment, diving into the end zone on a fourth-and-four quarterback draw late in the fourth quarter. Indiana finished 16–0 in just the second season under head coach Curt Cignetti, completing one of the most improbable championship runs in college football history. Miami rallied behind two touchdowns from RB Mark Fletcher Jr. and had a late drive, but Indiana’s defense sealed the win with a game-ending interception with just under a minute left.
NFL
— The Buffalo Bills have fired head coach Sean McDermott after the team again failed to reach the Super Bowl in his nine seasons. The move came two days after the Bills were eliminated in a 33-30 overtime loss at Denver in the divisional round of the playoffs. The Bills went 12-5 in the regular season. Buffalo became the first NFL team to win a playoff game in six consecutive years but not reach the Super Bowl.
— The Tennessee Titans have agreed to hire Robert Saleh as their next head coach. Saleh spent this season as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator, his second stint in that job after spending three-plus seasons as coach of the New York Jets. He did not have a winning season with the Jets and was fired after a 2-3 start in 2024, going 20-36 overall.
— The Miami Dolphins and Jeff Hafley have reached an agreement to make the former Boston College head coach and Packers defensive coordinator their coach. Hafley replaces Mike McDaniel, who was fired after going 35-33 in four seasons. Hafley spent two seasons in Green Bay. He met with the Dolphins for a second interview earlier Monday before he was offered the job.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— Arizona is the unanimous No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll for the first time. The Wildcats received all 61 votes from a media panel in Monday’s poll. Arizona (18-0) won both of its games last week to remain among the three undefeated men’s teams. Iowa State dropped seven spots to No. 9 after losing to Kansas and Cincinnati last week. Nebraska moved up a spot to No. 7, its highest ranking ever as the Huskers are now 18-0.
— Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self did not travel with the Jayhawks to Boulder for their game tonight at Colorado after being taken to a hospital in Lawrence on Monday. Kansas’ athletic department said that Self was feeling under the weather and went to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. Self felt better after receiving IV fluids. It was not immediately clear if Self would attempt to travel for the game or if an assistant would run the bench. Self, 63, missed the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments in 2023 because of a heart condition.
