MLB
— St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker staged a dramatic comeback to defeat hometown favorite Kyle Schwarber and win the 2026 Home Run Derby on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park. Walker erased Schwarber’s total of 11 home runs in the final round by hitting six consecutive homers on six swings, becoming the first Cardinals player to win the event. Major League Baseball debuted a new swing-based Derby format this year, replacing the timed rounds. Schwarber finished as runner-up for the second time in his career. The Derby, held in Philadelphia for the first time since 1996, was sold out and streamed live on Netflix.
— Major League Baseball’s All-Stars are pushing back against the league’s proposed salary cap, but players say there is still time to avoid a labor dispute that could impact the 2027 season. Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes, New York Mets star Juan Soto and Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper are among players who say they will not support a salary cap. MLB owners proposed a cap for the first time since the league’s 1994-95 strike. The current labor agreement expires Dec. 1, and MLB is expected to lock out players after that date. A more significant deadline could come in late February or early March if the league decides whether to delay opening day. The proposal would limit spending in 2027 to about $245 million and establish a payroll floor of about $171 million. Players argue the system would restrict earning potential.
— Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper says he did not know a personalized video he recorded through Cameo would be used by FanDuel as a reward for a high-volume gambler who later sued the sportsbook. A FanDuel customer, Terry Thompson, wagered $18.5 million with the company and received a video message from Harper as a VIP reward. Thompson later filed a lawsuit alleging FanDuel and DraftKings took advantage of his gambling addiction. Harper said he recorded the video through Cameo, an app where fans pay celebrities for personalized messages, and was unaware of any connection between the request and FanDuel’s VIP program. Harper said if he had known FanDuel’s intent or the details of Thompson’s situation, he would not have made the video. He also said FanDuel did not have permission to use the recording.
— The Athletics have dismissed pitching coach Scott Emerson following a nine-game losing streak heading into the All-Star break. The team announced bullpen coach Dan Hubbs will take over as interim pitching coach for the remainder of the season. Oakland entered the break with a 41-55 record and sits fourth in the American League West. The Athletics have the second-worst team ERA in Major League Baseball at 5.21, ahead of only the Colorado Rockies. The move came after a 9-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, extending the team’s losing streak to nine games.
NCAA TOURNAMENT
— The NCAA women’s basketball tournament is making a major change to its bracket format beginning next season. The top 16 teams will now be placed in the bracket according to their true overall ranking, regardless of conference affiliation. Previously, the selection committee separated top teams from the same conference into different regions to prevent them from meeting before the Final Four. The change allows teams to remain in the spots they earned through the selection process. The adjustment could have the biggest impact on conferences such as the SEC, ACC, Big Ten and Big 12, which have regularly placed four or more teams in the tournament. The men’s tournament will continue separating top seeds from the same conference into different regions.
NFL
— Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has been named the NFL’s top quarterback entering the 2026 season in a preseason poll conducted by The Associated Press. Allen received five first-place votes from a panel of eight AP pro football writers, beating out Patrick Mahomes, who had held the top spot in the poll the previous three seasons. Mahomes finished second after an injury-shortened season in which he suffered a torn ACL late in the year. Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, the reigning NFL MVP, was third. Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson ranked fourth, while Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow rounded out the top five.
— Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has been voted the NFL’s top coach by The Associated Press for the fourth consecutive year. Despite last season’s struggles, Reid remains one of the most successful coaches in NFL history. He has won three Super Bowls with Kansas City and ranks fourth on the league’s all-time wins list with 307 victories. Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay finished second, while Seattle’s Mike Macdonald, who led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl championship last season, placed third. San Francisco’s Kyle Shanahan was fourth, and Denver’s Sean Payton rounded out the top five.
