PALACE CITY LEGION BASEBALL
— The No. 1 seed and tournament host Rapid City Post 22 is an automatic qualifier for the Class A state tournament. Teams will play in a best-of-3 series to determine the eight-team field for the state tournament on July 28-Aug. 1. Palace City takes No. 11 seed Rapid City Post 320 in game one on Wednesday at 7:30 pm. Game two follows on Thursday at 4 pm, with a potential game three at 6:30 pm.

— Palace City Junior Legion will take on No. 5 seed Watertown in its region series later this week. Game one of the best of three is Wednesday at 6 pm in Watertown. Game two will be Thursday at Noon, followed by a potential game three at 2:30. Post 18 enters region play as the No. 12 seed with an 8-11 record vs. Class A teams. The seven region winners qualify for the state tournament next week in Sioux Falls.

— Two sudden-death playoffs decided the South Dakota Golf Association’s Sanford Series championship finals on Monday at Sutton Bay Golf Club with Brookings’ Tyson Lunn and Watertown’s Brynn Roehrich finishing first. Lunn captured the boys title after edging out Brandon’s Cooper Shuman in extra holes following an even-par 72 in regulation. In the girls division, Roehrich outlasted Aberdeen Central’s Olivia Braun after both opened with a +1 73. Mitchell’s Asher Dannenbring place fifth, just one shot behind the leaders with a +1 73. Dannenbring finished third in the overall season point standings.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Cleveland’s Petey Halpin and Rhys Hoskins each hit a pair of home runs and the Guardians matched a home franchise record by hitting seven home runs in their 13-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Bryan Rocchio, Travis Bazzana and Patrick Bailey also homered for Cleveland. Minnesota starter Joe Ryan tied a major league record and set a franchise mark by allowing six homers. Ryan gave up eight runs and a career-high 10 hits in four innings, raising his ERA from 2.85 to 3.38. Game two of the four game series is Tuesday at 5:40 pm.
WORLD CUP
— Spain’s World Cup champions returned home to a hero’s welcome Monday, with an estimated 1.8 million fans lining the streets of Madrid. Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time Sunday for its second men’s World Cup title and first since 2010.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— University of Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel will step down at the end of 2026 after agreeing to a buyout of the final three years of his contract. The move follows investigations into the athletic department and former football coach Sherrone Moore’s relationship with an executive assistant. Michigan’s Interim university President said a culture review found concerns with leadership accountability, organizational structure and employees’ ability to raise concerns. Manuel led Michigan’s athletic department for a decade, overseeing four national championships, including football in 2023 and men’s basketball this year.
— SEC Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey says conversations about the SEC breaking away from the rest of college sports are real, but not the league’s preferred path. Speaking at SEC football media days, Sankey said frustrations over NIL rules, lawsuits, player eligibility, congressional legislation and the future of the College Football Playoff have fueled those discussions. He said the SEC still sees value in remaining part of a national governing body but wants the NCAA to function more effectively. Sankey also called for stronger national NIL standards and greater transparency in athlete compensation while the SEC remains opposed to expanding the College Football Playoff beyond its current 12-team format.

— The attorney for Arizona Cardinals director of college scouting Ryan Gold, who was suspended indefinitely last week for violating the NFL’s gambling policy, called the league’s accusations “blatantly false” and said his client is appealing his suspension. The NFL on Friday said its investigation determined that Gold provided confidential, nonpublic inside information regarding 2026 draft selections by the Cardinals before the picks were announced and that Gold also participated in parlay bets on NFL and college games. The league didn’t say to whom Gold had provided the information.
WNBA
— Kayla McBride made six 3-pointers and scored 33 points, while rookie Olivia Miles had 32 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as the Minnesota Lynx beat the Seattle Storm 105-102 on Monday night for their sixth straight victory. The Lynx improved to a league best 21-6 on the season.
TENNIS
— The Women’s Tennis Association is introducing one-off mandatory gene-testing for all players effective Tuesday, a requirement to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The WTA updated its women’s eligibility policy to include gender screening “based on biological sex” this week “to preserve the integrity of women’s professional tennis and maintain fair competition conditions for all players.” The new policy takes the organization in line with the eligibility policy introduced by the International Olympic Committee in March.

— A vintage jacket bought at an Oregon thrift store for just $3 has sold at auction for nearly $90,000. 19-year-old Quinn Brown spotted the Los Angeles Lakers warmup jacket in a Portland Goodwill bargain bin earlier this year. Sotheby’s later verified the jacket belonged to NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain and photo-matched it to the Lakers’ 1972 championship run and the 1972-73 season, Chamberlain’s last in the league. On Monday, the jacket fetched $89,600 at auction.
MLB
— Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is expected to throw off a mound later this week, but there is no timetable for his return to the pitching rotation. Ohtani missed his scheduled start against Philadelphia after left knee irritation kept him out of the All-Star Game. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says the issue has not worsened, but has not improved enough for Ohtani to return. The four-time MVP last pitched July 3.
— Major League Baseball unveiled throwback uniforms for both the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies ahead of the August 13th “Field of Dreams” game in Dyersville, Iowa. Minnesota will wear all-white pinstripe jerseys featuring their original 1961 “Minnie and Paul” sleeve patch. The Phillies are throwing it back to their 1939 road look with gray jerseys and a replica patch commemorating baseball’s centennial anniversary. It marks the third edition of the Field of Dreams game and the first since 2022.
— Boston’s Caleb Durbin hit a tiebreaking homer over the Green Monster with two outs in the eighth inning as the Red Sox extended the second-longest winning streak in team history to 14 games, beating Baltimore 6-5 to snap the Orioles seven game winning streak. The Red Sox would match a team record with a win Tuesday night. Boston won 15 straight in 1946.
— Trea Turner hit two homers, including the 200th of his career, and drove in five runs, while Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh also went deep as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-7. Mookie Betts homered twice and had two singles for the Dodgers, who have lost seven of its last eight games in Philadelphia.
— Cooper Pratt hit his first major league homer and had his first career three-hit game as the Brewers defeated the New York Mets 8-3. Joey Ortiz had a three-run homer and Andrew Vaughn launched a two-run shot for the Brewers, who won their fourth straight. Milwaukee ace Jacob Misiorowski struck out six and allowed one unearned run while throwing 65 pitches over four innings in his first appearance since July 7.
— Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered in consecutive at-bats and drove in five runs, leading the New York Yankees to an 8-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
— Cal Raleigh hit his sixth career grand slam, while George Kirby and three Seattle relievers combined for a three-hitter as the Seattle beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-0.
— Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run single in Detroit’s three-run 10th inning as the Tigers defeated the Chicago Cubs 8-6. Dillon Dingler connected for two solo homers as Detroit improved to 12-4 in its last 16 games.
— Nick Loftin’s squeeze bunt with one out in the ninth inning scored Josh Rojas to give the Kansas City Royals a 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
— Cedric Mullins, Victor Mesa Jr. and Nick Fortes hit solo homers, while Nick Martinez pitched six innings of one-run ball as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-1.
— Bryce Elder pitched six innings, allowing just two runs in leading the Atlanta Braves to a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres. Michael Harris II and Ozzie Albies homered for the Braves.
— Vaughn Grissom drove in the tying run with a one-out double in the ninth inning and Jo Adell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Los Angeles Angels a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
— Andrew Benintendi hit a go-ahead three-run double in the fifth inning as the Chicago White Sox beat the Texas Rangers 10-3.
— Houston’s Jeremy Peña hit a grand slam, Yordan Alvarez homered twice as the Astros snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-5 win over the Miami Marlins.
— Jeff McNeil drove in the go-ahead runs with a pinch-hit single in the seventh inning as the Athletics beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2. Athletics rookie Tommy White went 4 for 5 in his third major league game.
— Andrés Chaparro, Jacob Young and CJ Abrams homered to lead the Washington Nationals past the Colorado Rockies 7-3.
