MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell activities director Cory Aadland has been named the 2026 South Dakota High School Athletic Director of the Year by the state coaches association. Aadland has led the Mitchell School District’s activities programs since 2016. Officials with the coaches association praised his decade of leadership, pointing to his focus on education-based athletics and expanding opportunities for both student-athletes and coaches. During his time with the district, Aadland has spearheaded several major facility upgrades. Those projects include installing artificial turf, opening a $12 million performing arts center, and helping pass a $17 million bond to complete the new high school’s athletic facilities. Beyond local improvements, Aadland is active in sports administration at both the state and national levels. He serves as coordinator for the state athletic administrators leadership training institute and holds a seat on the board of directors for the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

Alexandria 5, Platte 2 – Alex Mizsak threw eight innings for the Angels, allowing two runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts. Jordan Gau added a solo home run.
Parkston Rays 8, Parkston Mudcats 6 – The Rays overcame a 6-0 deficit after two innings. Nolan Dvorak with a home run and three RBI’s., while Landon Sudbeck added three RBI’s. Carter Sommer got the win in relief, throwing seven shutout innings, allowing three hits with nine strikeouts. Gunnar Wilhelm led the Mudcats with a pair of hits and three RBI’s.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Minnesota Twins start a three-game home series against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday at 6:40 pm. The Twins are 53-54 on the season and are just one game back of Cleveland for the final Wild Card spot in the American League. Minnesota is also just three games back of the Chicago White Sox for first place in the AL Central. Meanwhile, Kansas City is in last place in the division at 45-62. Taj Bradley gets the start for the Twins after throwing seven innings on Thursday at Cleveland, allowing one run and two hits. Bradley is 9-4 on the season with a 3.69 ERA.

— Veteran safety Jamal Adams has agreed to terms with the Minnesota Vikings on the eve of training camp. Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley was part of the front office that brought Adams to the Seattle Seahawks in a trade prior to the 2020 season. The Vikings have been awaiting word on the future of longtime safety Harrison Smith, who is contemplating retirement, but Adams has played primarily a linebacker in the latter stages of his career. With the Las Vegas Raiders last season, he played all 448 of his defensive snaps at linebacker. At one point in Adams’ career, he was one of the best safeties in the league. He was selected by the Jets with the sixth overall pick of the 2017 draft and was named first-team All-Pro in 2019.

— The son of Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy has been arrested and charged with the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy, the wife of the Kansas City offensive coordinator, authorities in Virginia said Monday. Deputies responded late Sunday to a shooting in Ashburn, Virginia, where the couple still had a home from Bieniemy’s time coaching with the Washington Commanders. They found the 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy with multiple gunshot wounds, and she was transported to a hospital where she was in stable condition. Elijah Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of the couple, was arrested early Monday in connection with the shooting.

— New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger will be sidelined for four to six weeks with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. Bellinger was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday, a day after he got hurt running the bases during a win at Philadelphia. The loss of Bellinger is another major injury for a Yankees team already playing without reigning MVP Aaron Judge, who has been out since May 31 because of a fractured rib. Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton has been sidelined since April 24 because of a strained right calf.

— FIFA President Gianni Infantino lashed out at critics following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, accusing them of spreading “hate and false rumors” about the tournament in a lengthy statement posted to Instagram and FIFA’s website. Infantino defended the tournament’s organization and FIFA’s handling of several high-profile controversies, including the entry of Iran’s team into the United States, visa denials for certain fans, high ticket prices, and FIFA’s decision to defer a one-game suspension for U.S. forward Folarin Balogun following a red card. The statement comes as FIFA faces heightened media tension and renewed scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers over its ties to the Trump administration.

— North Carolina football general manager Michael Lombardi has been placed on paid administrative leave. The school didn’t provide details as to the reason, noting that employees and athletes aren’t permitted to address the topic “as is standard procedure with personnel matters.” Lombardi joined Bill Belichick in making the NFL-to-college move when the school hired the former New England Patriots coach in December 2024. Lombardi’s career as an NFL executive had included being the GM of the Cleveland Browns in 2013.

— Joc Pederson homered twice to drive in four runs as the Texas Rangers defeated the Seattle Mariners 7-3. Texas took three of four in the series to stretch their AL West lead to 2 ½ games. The Rangers at 54-52 are the only AL West team with a winning record.
— Griffin Conine hit a walkoff run-scoring single to lift the Marlins past the Philadelphia Phillies 8-7 and end Miami’s franchise record 12-game losing streak.
— Ali Sánchez hit a three-run shot for his first career homer as the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 9-5 in the opener of a four-game series.
— Brandon Lowe singled home Billy Cook in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
— Jackson Holliday had four hits as the Baltimore Orioles hit three home runs in an 8-5 win against the Detroit Tigers. Detroit lost its third straight game to fall to 50-57 on the season.
— Francisco Lindor homered twice and tripled, driving in six runs as the New York Mets pulled away for a 14-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
— Alex Bregman had a homer, two doubles and drove in two runs to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 7-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
— Ceddanne Rafaela hit his first major league grand slam as the Boston Red Sox beat the Athletics 4-2 after being held without a hit through five innings.
— Grant McCray hit his first major league home run in almost two years and Tyler Mahle pitched into the seventh inning as the San Francisco Giants beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0.
— LaMonte Wade Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk that forced home the go-ahead run in a four-run ninth inning as the Houston Astros came back to beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-4. The Astros rallied in their final at-bat on a hit, two walks, two errors and two hit batters to hand the Angels their ninth loss this season when leading after eight innings.
— Luis Urías homered, while Myles Straw had a double and a run-scoring single as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Washington Nationals 3-2.
— The opening game of the three-game series between the Cleveland Guardians and Reds in Cincinnati was postponed Monday night due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday. The first game will begin at 12:40 p.m. CST. First pitch of the regularly-scheduled game is set for 6:10 p.m.
