AMATEUR BASEBALL
— The Mitchell Aces (2-18 on the season) is now scheduled to participate in the Class A district playoffs, starting on Friday.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s soccer will host its Blue vs. Yellow scrimmage on Thursday at 7 pm, followed by an exhibition vs. Nebraska on Tuesday, August 5. SDSU officially starts the season at Missouri on Thursday, August 14 at 7 pm.

YOUTH BASEBALL
— Mount Vernon/Plankinton won the 17U state title on Sunday over the host Gregory, 9-8 in eight-innings in the Bravo Division.

— The Platte/Geddes 17-and-under baseball team won a state title at home on Sunday with a 3-2 win over Garretson in the Charlie Division.

GOLF
— Watertown swept the titles at the South Dakota Golf Association’s season-ending Sanford Series Championship in Sioux Falls on Tuesday with Gabi Olson winning the girls’ title in a four-hole playoff after shooting a 1-under-par 71. On the boys’ side, Ty Lenards shot a tournament-best 2-under 70 to win by one stroke.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— Brooks Lee hit a two-run single off Jordan Hicks in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox after a 90-minute rain delay Monday night. Game two of the series is tonight at 6:40 pm.

— The AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers acquired starting pitcher Chris Paddack from the Minnesota Twins in a three-player trade on Monday to fill an injury-created vacancy in their rotation. The Tigers announced right-hander Reese Olson will miss the remainder of the regular season with a strained shoulder suffered during his most recent bullpen session. The Twins sent Paddack and right-hander Randy Dobnak to Detroit for 19-year-old minor league catcher Enrique Jimenez. The 29-year-old Paddack went 3-9 with a 4.95 ERA in 21 starts for the Twins this season. Paddack will make his debut for Detroit on Wednesday against Arizona. Dobnak was sent to Triple-A Toledo.

MLB
— Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg, who became one of baseball’s best all-around players while starring for the Chicago Cubs, has died. He was 65. Sandberg announced in January 2024 that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and then said in August 2024 that he was cancer-free. But then announced on Dec. 10 that his cancer had returned and spread to other organs. Sandberg hit .285 with 282 homers, 1,061 RBIs and 344 steals in 15 years with Chicago. He made 10 All-Star teams and was a nine time Gold Glove winner.

— Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of a Major League Baseball investigation into sports betting. Clase, a three-time All-Star, becomes the second Cleveland pitcher to be placed on leave in connection with a sports gambling probe. Luis Ortiz also is on non-disciplinary leave through Aug. 31. It was unclear if the cases were related in any way. The Guardians said in a statement they “have been informed that no additional players or club personnel are expected to be impacted.”

— Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred and Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper had a spirited exchange during a question-and-answer session between the commissioner and the team last week Phillies slugger Nick Castellanos previously confirmed some details from the meeting in interviews with ESPN. Manfred met with the Phillies and Red Sox during their series last week in Philadelphia. The session with the Phillies lasted more than an hour.

— Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez hopes he avoided major injury when he was hit in the right index finger by a pitch late in a 5-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers last night. Suárez is a candidate to be traded to a contender by Thursday trade deadline. Suárez says “the X-rays were negative” and he’s scheduled for more tests on Tuesday. He has 36 homers this season.

— All-Star pitcher Kris Bubic of the Kansas City Royals will miss the rest of the season with a strained rotator cuff. The 27-year-old lefty is 8-7 with a 2.55 ERA this season, earning his first All-Star selection. He left Saturday’s game against Cleveland after allowing three earned runs and four walks in 2 2/3 innings.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders says he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer, but after surgery his oncologist has considered him cured, so he plans to coach this season. Doctors at the Cancer Center at the University of Colorado says Sanders had his bladder removed. The 57-year-old Sanders spoke on the eve of fall camp as he enters his third season as Colorado head coach. He brought his medical team with him to discuss his diagnosis. It was revealed that a section of his intestine was reconstructed to function as a bladder. His doctors say he won’t need radiation or chemotherapy.

NBA
— An autographed pair of Adidas shoes that Kobe Bryant wore in his first Los Angeles Lakers start have sold for $240,000 at auctions, the second-largest sum ever paid for a pair of his sneakers. Photo-matching company Sports Investors Authentication matched the shoes to “being worn by Kobe Bryant on January 28, 1997 — Bryant’s first career NBA game as a starter.” Both shoes are signed, and both autographs include letters of authentication.

— Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan has signed a multiyear contract extension with the franchise. The team announced that an extension had been reached, but it did not reveal the length or financial terms of the contract. Donovan will enter his sixth season in Chicago with 800 NBA games coached over his career. He is 195-205 in his five years in Chicago.

WNBA
— A 55-year-old Texas man who told police he was in “an imaginary relationship” with WNBA star Caitlin Clark was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison after pleading guilty to stalking and harassing. Michael Lewis, from Denton, Texas, reached a deal with prosecutors in which he pleaded guilty to one felony count of stalking and one misdemeanor count of harassment. Lewis was arrested in January after authorities alleged he sent hundreds of “threats and sexually explicit messages” to Clark between Dec. 12, 2024, and Jan. 11, 2025.

MLB
— Andrew Vaughn, Sal Frelick and Christian Yelich homered as the Milwaukee Brewers overcame a shaky start from Jacob Misiorowski to beat the Chicago Cubs 8-4 to take sole possession of first place in the NL Central. Misiorowski gave up three hits and three runs in four innings. He walked two and struck out seven while throwing 11 pitches of 100 mph or more.

— Ronald Acuña Jr., Marcell Ozuna and Austin Riley homered as the Atlanta Braves snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals, who equaled a club record by walking 14 batters. It was the fourth time the Royals walked 14 and the first since 2006.

— Andre Pallante allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 7-1. Pallante retired the first 10 batters before allowing a walk in the fourth. Graham Pauley singled in the sixth for the Marlins’ only hit against Pallante.

— Shohei Ohtani extended his hitting streak to nine games with a two-run double as the Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-2. Dodgers’ right-hander Yoshi Yamamoto went seven innings and struck out nine. Reds rookie Chase Burns had his third straight game with 10 strikeouts, but is still seeking his first win in the majors. The right-hander gave up three runs in 5 2/3 innings.

— Elías Díaz singled with two outs in the ninth inning to bring in Jose Iglesias with the winning run, as the San Diego Padres beat the Mets 7-6 to end New York’s seven-game winning streak.

— Luis Castillo allowed a run in seven innings, while the new acquired Josh Naylor hit his first home run for the Mariners as Seattle beat the Athletics 3-1.

— Junior Caminero hit a two-run homer as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 4-2 in the opener of a four-game series.

— Riley Adams hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the seventh inning to give the Washington Nationals to a 2-1 win over the Houston Astros. The Astros have dropped a season-high five straight games after being swept in a four-game series by the Athletics this weekend. The AL West leaders have dropped 10 of their last 11 home games and managed just one run for a third straight game.

— Rookie Troy Melton pitched seven scoreless innings in his second career start, as the Detroit Tigers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1.

— Luis Robert Jr. and Colson Montgomery homered to help the Chicago White Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 The last-place White Sox need two more wins to match their total from all of last year, when they went 41-121.

— Ramón Laureano homered and drove in three runs as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 11-4.

— Kevin Newman, Taylor Ward and Luis Rengifo homered to help the Los Angeles Angels beat Texas 6-4, snapping the Rangers’ six-game win streak.

— Andrew McCutchen hit a go-ahead homer as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat San Francisco 6-5 for their third straight win on a night when Giants top pitching prospect Carson Wisenhunt made his major league debut.

— Tyler Freeman singled home the go-ahead run as Colorado scored four times in the ninth inning, rallying the Rockies to an 8-6 victory over the Cleveland Guardians after the first pitch was delayed 2 1/2 hours by rain.
