All six runs in the game came off homers, with Texas’ Joc Pederson delivering a two-run shot in the third. Buxton has homered in six of his past nine games to get within one of major league leaders Yordan Alvarez of Houston and Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber. Four Twins relievers held Texas to one hit over the final 4 1/3 innings. Game two of the three-game series is tonight at 7:05 pm.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Quarterback Brendan Sorsby plans to enter the NFL supplemental draft and will not play for Texas Tech this fall, according to ESPN. Sorsby’s decision comes amid ongoing legal and eligibility issues related to NCAA rules after he admitted to betting on college sports, including thousands of wagers over a four-year span while at multiple schools. He had recently been granted a temporary injunction that would have allowed him to play in 2026 despite an NCAA ineligibility ruling. The NCAA had appealed the injunction and is seeking an expedited ruling before the start of the season. Sorsby will now attempt to enter the NFL supplemental draft, a rarely used system that allows teams to bid future draft picks on players whose eligibility status changes after the regular draft.

TENNIS
— Serena and Venus Williams are reuniting on the doubles court at Wimbledon. The All England Club announced Tuesday that the Williams sisters have received a wild card entry into the Wimbledon doubles tournament, which begins in less than two weeks. Serena Williams, 44, recently returned to competition after nearly four years away from professional tennis. Venus Williams, who turns 46 on Wednesday, has continued to compete on a limited basis. The sisters have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together, including six Wimbledon championships. The Williams sisters last teamed up at the 2022 U.S. Open. Wimbledon begins June 29 in London.

WORLD CUP
— Iran’s national soccer team says it was ordered to leave the United States immediately after its 2-2 World Cup draw with New Zealand on Monday night at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The team had planned to stay overnight in the Los Angeles area for recovery before returning to its training base in Tijuana, Mexico, but was told after the match to depart right away. The team has also faced lengthy travel delays and visa issues. Iran’s World Cup preparations have been complicated by heightened political tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel. FIFA previously rejected Iran’s request to move its U.S.-based group-stage matches to another country. On the field, Iran rallied from two deficits to earn a 2-2 draw with New Zealand. Iran’s next match is Sunday against Belgium, also at SoFi Stadium.

NBA
— The Chicago Bulls are finalizing a deal to hire Tiago Splitter as their next head coach. Splitter, who served as interim head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers this season, led the team to a 42-40 record and a first-round playoff appearance. The Bulls are coming off a 31-51 season and missed the playoffs for the fourth straight year while ranking 28th in scoring defense. Splitter would replace Billy Donovan, who resigned after six seasons.

OLYMPICS
— The U.S. women’s national flag football team is entering a more youthful phase ahead of the world championships in Germany, as the sport continues to expand globally and builds momentum toward its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. At a training camp in California, the roster has an average age of 26, nearly two years younger than just three seasons ago, with several players under 21 competing for spots on the final roster. Flag football participation among girls has surged in recent years, with tens of thousands now playing at the high school level, and the sport is being considered for NCAA championship status.

— Applications for roughly 60,000 volunteer positions for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games will open July 14, exactly two years before the Olympic opening ceremony. Volunteers will be needed across both the Olympic period, running from March through August 2028, and the Paralympic period from August through September 2028. Most volunteer positions will be based in the Los Angeles area, though additional sites will be used across the United States, including San Diego; Oklahoma City; New York; St. Louis; Columbus, Ohio; Nashville, and San Jose, California.

PGA
— Players arriving early for this week’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills are increasingly doing so to avoid slow and crowded practice rounds, as golfers adjust their preparation routines for major championships. Top players including Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth noted that practice rounds at majors have become longer and more congested, with tee time reservations, larger groups, and limited pace of play making it difficult to complete nine holes in less than three hours.

MLB
— Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Strider will be shut down from throwing for four weeks due to inflammation in his right elbow, the team announced Monday. Strider, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday, experienced elbow and shoulder soreness during Friday’s loss to the New York Mets. The right-hander has a history of arm issues, including Tommy John surgery in 2019 and a UCL repair in 2024. He is 4-2 with a 5.31 ERA in eight starts this season after returning from an earlier oblique injury.

— Pete Crow-Armstrong became the first major league player to hit for the cycle this season as the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Chicago trailed 4-3 in the ninth inning.

— Colt Keith had three home runs and six RBIs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Houston Astros 9-3. Kevin McGonigle and Spencer Torkelson also homered for Detroit.

— Dustin May took a perfect game into the seventh inning before finishing a one-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 3-0. May struck out nine and walked one in his first complete game in 71 major league starts.

— Eugenio Suárez homered twice and drove in a career-high six runs, including a grand slam in the second inning as the Cincinnati Reds rolled to a 12-0 victory over the New York Mets.

— Washington’s Luis García Jr. hit a go-ahead single, while Dylan Crews added a three-run homer as the Nationals scored five times in the fifth inning to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3. Washington has won seven of 10 and moved three games over .500 for the first time since 2019, when they won the World Series.

— Zack Wheeler struck out nine in six scoreless innings of two-hit ball, while rookie Gabriel Rincones Jr. homered for his first career hit as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Miami Marlins 7-0.

— Nick Kurtz hit two homers and drove in five runs, while Jeff McNeil also went deep and knocked in four as the Athletics beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-2.

— Pinch-hitter Miguel Rojas hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers erased an early deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3. Kyle Tucker also had a three-run HR for L.A.

— Arizona’s Pavin Smith hit a tiebreaking solo homer off the right-field foul pole, while Ryne Nelson allowed two runs over seven innings as the Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3.
