NFL
— The Cleveland Browns have traded two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in a deal that sends pass rusher Jared Verse and multiple draft picks to Cleveland. Garrett led the NFL with 23 sacks last season and broke the single-season sack record. The Eagles will receive a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick in return for the three-time Pro Bowl receiver. Brown, 28, departs Philadelphia after three seasons in which he topped 1,000 receiving yards each year and helped the Eagles win a Super Bowl during the 2024 season.

TENNIS
— Tennis legend Serena Williams is returning to professional competition at age 44, accepting a wild-card entry into a doubles event nearly four years after her last match in 2022. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion will begin her comeback in doubles next week in London, with speculation building that she could also appear at Wimbledon later this month and potentially the U.S. Open. Williams won seven Wimbledon singles titles and six U.S. Open crowns before stepping away from the sport, has not competed since the 2022 U.S. Open.

NBA
— Hall of Fame coach Rick Adelman, one of the NBA’s most successful and respected leaders who won more than 1,000 games and guided two teams to the Finals, has died at age 79. Adelman, the father of Denver Nuggets coach David Adelman, won 1,042 games over a coaching career that ranked 10th in NBA history with Portland, Golden State, Sacramento, Houston and Minnesota. He led the Trail Blazers to two NBA Finals appearances in 1990 and 1992 and led Sacramento to success in the early 2000s. Adelman also guided Houston to a 22-game winning streak in 2008.

MLB
— The head of the Major League Baseball Players Association said the union “has never been broken and never will be” as it prepares to fight Major League Baseball’s proposal for a salary cap, raising the possibility of a lockout when the current labor agreement expires Dec. 1. Interim executive director Bruce Meyer said Monday the players will resist any system that limits payrolls, arguing it would fundamentally alter the sport’s economic structure and reduce player compensation. Major League Baseball has proposed its first salary cap system since the 1994-95 labor dispute, alongside a payroll floor, setting up a potential confrontation similar to past work stoppages in the sport. Meyer said the union remains unified and strongly opposed to the idea, noting baseball is the only major North American sport without a salary cap and calling that structure essential to maintaining player freedom in the market.

— Brice Turang ended an 0-for-21 slump by going 2 for 2 with a double and triple in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 16-2 blowout of the San Francisco Giants. Milwaukee’s 16 runs and 18 hits were season highs, though the Brewers had no homers. The Brewers walked 11 times to match a season high.

— Dillon Dingler hit two of Detroit’s season-high five homers, while Riley Greene was a triple shy of the cycle as the Tigers held off the Tampa Bay Rays 10-9. Dingler had four hits and drove in four runs. Greene was 3 for 4 with a walk and three RBIs.

— Seattle’s Cole Young hit a game-winning single in the 10th inning as the Mariners beat the New York Mets 3-2 for their season-high seventh straight victory. The walk-off win was Seattle’s third in four games as the Mariners improved to a season-best three games over .500.

— Jacob deGrom threw five scoreless innings to earn his 100th career win as the Texas Rangers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1.
