MITCHELL KERNELS
— No. 7 Mitchell Kernels girls basketball will host No. 10 Spearfish at 6 pm on Friday in the Class AA SoDAK 16. Coverage starts at 5 pm with the KORNer Booth on KORN News Radio. Both teams finished the regular season with a 12-8 record. Spearfish defeated Mitchell on February 7, 61-55. The winner advances to the state tournament in Rapid City, March 12-14. Mitchell would face the winner between No. 2 O’Gorman/No. 15 Rapid City Central on Thursday, March 12, at 6 pm CST.
— No. 12 Mitchell Kernels boys basketball will be at No. 5 Watertown at 6 pm on Saturday in the Class AA SoDAK 16. Pregame coverage starts at 5:45 pm on KORN News Radio. Mitchell opened the season with a 59-55 overtime loss at Watertown on December 16.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball will host the first and second rounds of the 2026 NAIA National Championship at the Corn Palace on March 13-14. This marks the first time DWU has hosted national tournament games since the field expanded to 64 teams in 2022. Each opening-round site features four teams in a single-elimination format, with winners advancing to the final site in Sioux City, Iowa, March 19-24. DWU is ranked No. 9 in the latest NAIA coaches poll and is 14-1 at the Corn Palace this season.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball will be at No. 1 Dordt on Tuesday night at 7 pm in the GPAC tournament final. The Tigers lost to Dordt 65-59 on February 18 at the Corn Palace.
— Dakota Wesleyan baseball travels to Tucson, Arizona, this weekend with five games on the schedule.
— Dakota Wesleyan softball heads to Tucson, Arizona, this weekend with 10 games on the schedule. The Tigers face Indiana Wesleyan on Friday at 1 pm, followed by William Penn (Iowa) at 3:30 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State volleyball will host Nebraska for a regular-season matchup on Wednesday, September 2, at First Bank & Trust Arena in Brookings. SDSU comes off a 23-5 season and a perfect 16-0 conference record, while Nebraska finished 2025, 33-1 and ranked third in the final top 25 poll. Tickets for the Nebraska match are not included in the season ticket package, but season ticket holders will get first access to purchase them at a discounted price. Season ticket renewals for 2026 open March 10, with a deadline of May 26.
— South Dakota State’s Brooklyn Meyer has been named the final Summit League Player of the Week of the season. This is Meyer’s seventh weekly honor this season and her 13th career award, moving her into second place all-time. Meyer became SDSU’s Division I single-season scoring leader with 662 points, including 33 points in her final home game against USD on Saturday.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— Duke remains No. 1 in the latest AP men’s college basketball poll for the second straight week. The Blue Devils dominated last week with lopsided wins over Notre Dame and No. 11 Virginia, clinching the top seed for the ACC Tournament. Arizona holds the No. 2 spot, followed by Michigan, UConn, and Florida. The Big 12, Big Ten, and SEC each now have five ranked teams, leading all conferences.
— UConn remains the unanimous No. 1 team in the AP women’s Top 25 heading into the postseason. The Huskies are 31‑0 this season, including 47 straight wins, and received all 31 first-place votes. Following UConn are UCLA, South Carolina, and Texas, with Vanderbilt, LSU, Oklahoma, Michigan, Iowa, and TCU rounding out the top 10. The SEC leads all conferences with eight ranked teams, followed by the Big Ten with seven.

— The Houston Texans are acquiring running back David Montgomery in a trade with the Detroit Lions for offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and two draft picks. The Lions will receive a fourth-round draft pick this year and a seventh-round pick next year. Montgomery had 2,506 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns in three seasons with the Lions. He signed with the Lions in 2023 after four seasons with the Chicago Bears.
WNBA
— The WNBA sent a new CBA proposal to the players’ union Sunday night that includes allowing some of its young stars like Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers a chance to earn a maximum salary quicker. The new offer would allow players on rookie contracts who were first or second team all-league to become eligible to sign a maximum contract in their fourth year and would not be eligible for a franchise tag designation following that extension.
NBA
— San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet is urging the Atlanta Hawks to cancel their upcoming promotion with Atlanta’s Magic City adult entertainment club. Kornet says the March 16 event, “would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community” and could contribute to the objectification and mistreatment of women. Kornet added that while the industry varies, many workers face abuse, harassment, and violence, and the promotion conflicts with creating a family-friendly environment where fans of all ages can safely enjoy the game.
— Jamal Murray scored 45 points and made the go-ahead free throws with 31 seconds remaining to help the Denver Nuggets hold off the Utah Jazz 128-125. Nikola Jokic had 22 points and 12 rebounds.
— Alperen Sengun had 32 points and 13 rebounds, while Kevin Durant scored 30 as the Houston Rockets beat the Washington Wizards 123-118. Washington’s Trae Young was ejected from the game after leaving the bench to come on the court to complain to a referee, days before he is expected to make his Wizards debut. Durant made all 11 free throws and added seven assists and six rebounds.
— Payton Pritchard scored 25 points as the Boston Celtics beat Milwaukee 108-81 to spoil Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s return from a right calf strain. Antetokounmpo had 19 points and 11 rebounds in 25 minutes in his first action since getting injured on Jan. 23. The Bucks went 8-7 during his absence.
— Kawhi Leonard had 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists as the Los Angeles Clippers erased a 17-point deficit to beat the Golden State Warriors 114-101.
