MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell baseball will face Rapid City Stevens on Friday and Saturday in a best two-out-of-three series with the winner advancing to next week’s state tournament in Sioux Falls. First pitch on Friday in Rapid City is set for 9 pm CST, and the first game Saturday will be at 1:30 pm CST. A potential third game would be played at 4 pm CST. The winner of the series advances to the Class A state baseball tournament at Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24. Mitchell is the No. 9 seed and Rapid City Stevens the No. 8 seed. Mitchell just swept Stevens in a doubleheader at Drake Field on Saturday, 1-0 and 6-4.
— Mitchell boys tennis continues play at the ESD conference meet in Watertown starting at 8 am.
— Mitchell Kernels girls takes on Yankton in the annual Marchand Cup on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Lakeview Golf Course.
— Mitchell Kernels softball hosts Harrisburg on Tuesday at 5:30 pm. Mitchell is 5-8 on the season and currently the No. 12 seed in Class AA. Harrisburg is 12-2 overall and the currently No. 1 seed. The Kernels will be at Brookings on Friday and end the regular season vs. Tea Area next Friday, April 23.
— Mitchell High School and the Athletic Booster Club will host its annual Athletic Banquet at the Corn Palace on Wednesday at 6:30 pm. The event is for all Mitchell student-athletes in grades 9-12 who participated in a high school sport as well as students in grades 7-8 who participated in a high school varsity sport. Student-athletes need to check their school email to sign up for their free meal ticket. Parents, siblings, grandparents, and family are invited to attend the banquet. Sports Director Travis Kriens will present the KORN/Tom Maxwell Mitchell Coach of the Year.
— Mitchell track and field will compete at the ESD track and field meet takes place on Saturday in Harrisburg.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan’s Allison Meyerink will tee off at 3:30 pm CST on Tuesday at the NAIA Women’s Golf National Championship in Michigan. After Wednesday’s second round, the field will be cut, reducing the field to the top 15 teams (plus ties) and six individuals who have not already made the cut with their teams (plus ties).
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State baseball won two out of three games over the weekend vs. Omaha, winning on Sunday 14-3 in seven innings. SDSU ends the regular season with four games vs. Oral Roberts with a Thursday doubleheader at Noon.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD hosts the Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Vermillion starting on Thursday and running through Saturday. Qualifiers will compete at the NCAA West Regional at College Station, Texas May 28-31.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— Nebraska and Oklahoma men’s basketball will play at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls on Saturday, November 15. Nebraska finished last season 21-14, winning the inaugural College Basketball Crown tournament, while Oklahoma went 20-14 and made the NCAA Tournament as a No. 9 seed, losing in the first round to Connecticut. This will be Nebraska’s third straight year playing at the Sanford Pentagon. Ticket sale details will be announced later.
HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
— Team White defeated Team Blue 93-80 in a South Dakota all-star girls basketball game on Sunday at the Pentagon. Mya Kochuten of Spearfish had a game-high 21 points, while Reagan Rus of Mt. Vernon/Plankinton had six points.
— Team Blue defeated Team White 116-107 in a South Dakota all-star boys basketball game on Sunday at the Pentagon. Rapid City Christian’s Julius Frog finished with a game-high 26 points, while Rapid City Central’s Gilbert White Jr. added 20 points.
NBA
— Anthony Edwards scored 30 points for his second straight 30-point performance, while Julius Randle had 31 points as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Golden State Warriors 117-110 for a 3-1 lead in their Western Conference playoff series. Now, it’s back home to Minneapolis for the Wolves with a chance to clinch the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series in Game 5 on Wednesday. The Warriors will still be without Stephen Curry, who sat out his third game in a row and is scheduled to have his strained left hamstring re-evaluated that day.
— Jalen Brunson had 39 points and 12 assists as the New York Knicks pushed the defending champion Boston Celtics to the brink of elimination with a 121-113 win Monday night in Game 4. Boston’s Jayson Tatum was carried off the court with a lower right leg injury with 2:58 remaining. He buried his face in a towel in obvious pain while grabbing at his leg above the ankle after the non-contact injury. Tatum scored 42 points. An MRI is scheduled for today.
— The Dallas Mavericks won the NBA draft lottery on Monday night, giving them the No. 1 pick in next month’s draft as they are expected to pick Duke freshman Cooper Flagg. Dallas had just a 1.8% chance of getting the No. 1 overall pick. San Antonio will pick second. Philadelphia will pick third, and Charlotte will pick fourth.
— Michael Jordan is joining NBC Sports as a special contributor to its NBA coverage when the 2025-26 season begins. NBC made the announcement on Monday morning during its upfront presentation at Radio City Music Hall previewing the networks offerings during the upcoming television season. NBC returns to carrying the NBA after a 23-year absence. It had NBA rights from 1990 through 2002 and carried all six of Jordan’s championships as a member of the Chicago Bulls.

— The Philadelphia Eagles will start defending their Super Bowl title at home on Thursday, Sept. 4 against division rival Dallas Cowboys. The matchup for the annual regular-season kickoff game was revealed by the NFL on Monday in the first in a series of announcements this week ahead of the full schedule release. The Eagles are also featured in a Saturday doubleheader on Fox on Dec. 20 against Washington and on Nov. 28 on Amazona Prime Video’s Black Friday game against Chicago.
TENNIS
— Novak Djokovic is splitting with coach Andy Murray, just two weeks ahead of the French Open. Murray’s representatives said in a statement Tuesday that the two former No. 1-ranked players will “no longer be working together.” Murray thanked Djokovic for the “unbelievable opportunity to work together.” Djokovic said “I really enjoyed deepening our friendship together.” Djokovic and Murray joined forces ahead of the Australian Open in what initially was seen as an unlikely pairing. After Murray retired last year, Djokovic reached out with the coaching proposition.
MLB
— Bobby Witt Jr. and Jonathan India each drove in two runs to help Michael Wacha and the Kansas City Royals beat the Houston Astros 7-5. Wacha allowed two runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
— Gabriel Arias had a three-run double in the fourth inning, while José Ramírez stole three bases as the Guardians beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0. Ramírez moved into third place in Cleveland history for stolen bases.
— Pete Alonso hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the ninth inning as the New York Mets took advantage of a costly error by shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3.
— Gleyber Torres homered and drove in three runs as the Detroit Tigers cruised to a 14-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Trey Sweeney also homered and leadoff hitter Kerry Carpenter scored three times in the first three innings for the Tigers, who improved to an AL-best 27-15.
— Masyn Winn homered in the seventh inning to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 for their ninth consecutive win.
— Trent Grisham hit a pair of home runs, including one during New York’s six-run fifth inning, as the Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 11-5. The win was overshadowed by Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera needing to be taken off the field in an ambulance after he got hurt in the ninth inning. Cabrera got hurt on an awkward slide when he scored on a sacrifice fly. He appeared to injure his left leg when he reached back for the plate.
— Dansby Swanson and Seiya Suzuki homered in the fifth inning to help the Chicago Cubs beat the Miami Marlins 5-2. Miguel Amaya went 3 for 3 for Chicago, and Kyle Tucker hit an RBI triple.
— Taylor Ward hit a grand slam to cap a six-run ninth inning, as the Los Angeles Angels beat the San Diego Padres 9-5.
— Corbin Carroll hit two homers off Justin Verlander as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1. Carroll hit his HR’s in the third and fifth innings.
— Wyatt Langford hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning for Texas to end a no-hit bid by the Colorado Rockies as the Rangers went on to a 2-1 victory. The Rockies fell to 7-34 with their ninth loss in 10 games.
— Atlanta’s Alex Verdugo’s single off Andrew Chafin drove in Eli White from second base in the bottom of the ninth as the Braves recovered after blowing a two-run lead to beat Washington 4-3 and hand the Nationals their sixth consecutive loss.
— The Minnesota Twins start a three-game series at Baltimore tonight with first pitch at 5:35 pm. The Twins have won eight games in a row and are 21-20 on the season. They sit in fourth place in the AL Central, three games behind Cleveland and Kansas City.
