— Mitchell Kernels track and field competes at the Class AA state meet starting Thursday in Sioux Falls.
— Mitchell Kernels girls golf competes at the ESD conference meet on Tuesday in Aberdeen.
— Mitchell Kernels softball takes on the No. 3 seed Sioux Falls Washington in the SoDAK 16 on Tuesday at 5 pm at the Sanford Sports Complex.
— Mitchell placed seventh at the Class AA state boys tennis tournament on Friday in Rapid City. The Kernels finished with 200 team points, just behind Rapid City Stevens. Mitchell was led by fourth-place finishes from Simon Wiese (Weese) at No. 5 singles and Dayton Adams at No. 6 singles. Wiese reached the semifinals after wins over Sioux Falls Washington and Watertown before falling in the third-place match. Adams also advanced to the semifinals with two straight-set victories before taking fourth. Dawson Adams added a fifth-place finish at No. 4 singles, while the doubles team of Wiese and Dayton Adams placed fourth in Flight 3 doubles O’Gorman won the Class AA team title with 484 points, edging Harrisburg by two points in the final standings. Sioux Falls Lincoln finished third.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State baseball earned the Summit League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and was placed in the Lincoln Regional on Monday, where they will face No. 13 national seed Nebraska on Friday at 3 p.m. SDSU is 24-31 overall and making just its second NCAA Tournament appearance, the first since 2013. Nebraska is 42-15 and defeated the Jackrabbits 5-4 during the regular season. The regional also includes Ole Miss and Arizona State, with all four teams competing in a double-elimination format. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
SIOUX FALLS STAMPEDE
— The Sioux Falls Stampede are USHL champions for the first time since 2019 after a 4-3 double-overtime win over the Muskegon Lumberjacks in Game 4 of the Clark Cup Final Saturday in Muskegon, Michigan. Joey Macrina scored the championship-winning goal at 6:43 of double overtime to seal the 3-1 series victory and secure the franchise’s fourth Clark Cup title.

— Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian/White Lake scored four runs in the sixth inning to rally past Vermillion, 4-3, on Monday in the Class B state baseball quarterfinals in Brookings. The fifth-seeded Honkers trailed 2-0 before breaking through in the sixth on RBI singles from Kenyon Kuiper and Hayes DeVries, along with a bases-loaded walk by Isaac Leader. Keaton Christensen allowed two runs on five hits over six innings with five strikeouts. Kuiper earned the save, giving up one run in the seventh.

— Munetaka Murakami homered, while Anthony Kay pitched six innings as the Chicago White Sox stopped Minnesota’s four-game win streak with a 3-1 victory over the Twins. The White Sox have won seven in a row against the Twins for the first time since 1995. The opener of the four-game series was the first meeting of the AL Central teams this season. Brooks Lee homered for Minnesota, which had won six of seven overall. Game two of the series is Tuesday at 6:40 pm.

— Karl Anthony-Towns had 19 points and 14 rebounds, while OG Anunoby scored 17 as the New York Knicks routed the Cleveland Cavaliers 130-93 Monday night to complete a four-game sweep of the Eastern Conference finals and advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. Landry Shamet scored 16 off the bench while Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson had 15 apiece for the Knicks, who became the fourth team to have an 11-game winning streak during their postseason run. The last to do it was Golden State, which had a 15-game run en route to its second title in three seasons in 2017. All but one of the Knicks’ wins have been by double digits, with an average margin of victory of 23 points.
— Victor Wembanyama scored 33 points with eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 103-82 in Game 4 Sunday night, evening the Western Conference finals at two games apiece. Game 5 is Tuesday in Oklahoma City.

— Wander Franco has been declared criminally responsible for sexual and psychological abuse of a minor but will not serve a prison sentence, according to a ruling Monday in the Dominican Republic. The court said Franco had a relationship with a 14-year-old and transferred money to the mother. Franco was arrested in January 2024. His attorney said the court found circumstances that exempted him from punishment, though he was still found criminally responsible. Major League Baseball said it is reviewing the decision. Franco’s full sentencing is scheduled for June 16.

— Tatsuya Imai combined with relievers Steven Okert and Alimber Santa on the 17th regular-season no-hitter in Houston Astros history, while Christian Walker and Yordan Alvarez homered in a 9-0 win over the Texas Rangers. It was the first no-hitter in the major leagues since Sept. 2024.
— Anthony Volpe answered Bobby Witt Jr.’s go-ahead homer in the eighth with a two-run single in the ninth for New York, sending the Yankees to a 4-3 victory over Kansas City extending their winning streak to 12 vs. the Royals.
— Jacob Misiorowski matched a career high with 12 strikeouts and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1. Misiorowski threw 57 pitches of at least 100 mph, while allowing one run, two hits and one walk in seven innings. His ERA improved to 1.83.
— Henry Davis hit a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their ninth straight loss with a 2-1 victory.
— Colton Cowser hit a two-run game-winning homer in the 13th inning, his second straight walk-off HR, to give the Baltimore Orioles a 9-7 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Cowser becomes Baltimore’s first player to hit walk-off homers on consecutive days since 1985.
— Kyle Schwarber hit his major league-leading 21st home run to send the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-0 win against the San Diego Padres.
