MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels girls golf team finished third on Monday at the Sioux Falls Invitational at Willow Run Golf Course. The Kernels shot a 333, finishing behind champion Aberdeen Central at 310 and runner-up O’Gorman at 322. Maddie Childs led Mitchell with a 78, good for eighth place individually. Anna Eliason carded an 81 to finish 10th. Aberdeen Central’s Olivia Braun finished first with a 73. Mitchell continues its busy stretch Tuesday at Bakker Crossing Golf Course in Sioux Falls, competing in a quadrangular with Lincoln, Jefferson and Yankton starting at 9 am.
— Mitchell Kernels boys tennis team split a home triangular Monday at Hitchcock Park, defeating Pierre 9-0 before falling to Yankton 7-2. The Kernels moved to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in ESD conference play. Mitchell will host Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Harrisburg in a triangular Tuesday at Hitchcock Park starting at 11 am.
— Mitchell Kernels softball came up just short in a back-and-forth game Monday, falling 11-9 at Watertown. The Kernels jumped out early with a five-run second inning, including a two-run homer from Kinsley Herges, and led 6-4 after three innings. But Watertown answered with a five-run third. Mitchell drops to 1-8 and returns home Tuesday to face Sioux Falls Jefferson.
— Mitchell baseball hosts Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Tuesday for a 5 pm doubleheader at Drake Field. Mitchell is 9-8 overall on the season and currently 10th in Class A seed points. SF Roosevelt is 5-10 on the season, but No. 8 in seed points. The KORN pregame show starts at 4:45 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan softball placed four players on the All-GPAC First Team, the league announced Monday. Sophomore pitcher Alison Ernsberger, senior catcher Jordyn Blogg, junior outfielder Alessandra Ciurca and sophomore infielder Avery Perkins earned first-team honors after helping lead the Tigers to a 35-17 record and a tie for third place in the GPAC standings. Ernsberger posted a 16-8 record with a 2.59 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 157 innings. Ciurca led DWU with a .409 batting average, 56 hits and 24 stolen bases. Perkins hit .348 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs, while Blogg batted .341 with six home runs and 32 RBIs while handling most of the catching duties. Sophomore infielder Ashlen Johnson and junior outfielder Macy Moore were named to the All-GPAC Second Team.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— North Dakota State surged into the lead after round two of the Summit League Men’s Golf Championship in Arizona Tuesday. The Bison fired the only under-par team round of the day, led by Gabe Benson’s five-under 66, to build a six-shot lead. USD enters the final round in third place, seven strokes shy of the Bison. South Dakota State slipped to seventh place after shooting 15-over as a team. The final round tees off Tuesday morning, with an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
— South Dakota State softball takes on North Dakota State in the opening round of the Summit League tournament on Wednesday in Minneapolis at 4 pm.
— South Dakota State baseball returns home this weekend to host St. Thomas in their final home series of the season.

— USD, the No. 4 seed, will face No. 5 seed Kansas City in the opening round of the Summit League softball tournament Wednesday in Minneapolis at 1 pm.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Minnesota Twins start a three-game series at Washington on Tuesday night starting at 5:45 pm. The Twins are coming off a four-game split vs. Toronto over the weekend. Meanwhile, the National are a major league worst 4-12 at home this season. Minnesota is 15-20, 2.5 games out of first place in the AL Central.
NBA
— Anthony Edwards scored 18 points in his unexpected return from injury as the Minnesota Timberwolves held on to beat the San Antonio Spurs 104-102 in the opener of the Western Conference semifinals on Monday night. Edwards was expected to miss at least the first two games of the series after suffering a bone bruise and hyperextending his left knee on April 25 against Denver. Victor Wembanyama had 11 points and 15 rebounds and set an NBA playoff record with 12 blocks. Game 2 is Wednesday in San Antonio.
— Jalen Brunson scored 27 of his 35 points in the first half as the New York Knicks defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 137-98 on Monday night in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Knicks became the first team in NBA history to win three straight postseason games by at least 25 points. OG Anunoby added 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting, while Karl Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges both had 17. Game 2 is Wednesday night.
— The Orlando Magic fired head coach Jamahl Mosley on Monday after five seasons, following a third straight first-round playoff exit. The move came after Orlando blew a 3-1 series lead and was eliminated by the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference playoffs Sunday. The Magic also lost Game 6 at home after holding a 24-point second-half lead. Mosley was under contract for two more seasons after signing an extension in 2024.
— The Detroit Pistons have signed head coach J.B. Bickerstaff to a contract extension following the team’s first-round playoff series win over Orlando. The Pistons announced the deal Monday but did not disclose the length or financial terms of the extension. Bickerstaff has led Detroit to a 104-60 record in regular-season games since taking over prior to the 2024-25 season, guiding the franchise to two consecutive playoff appearances. This year, the Pistons finished 60-22, the best record in the Eastern Conference, and advanced past the first round for the first time since 2008.

COLLEGE BASEBALL
— The NCAA Baseball Rules Committee has approved a robot umpire challenge system for balls and strikes for use in the Southeastern Conference Tournament, the NCAA announced Monday. The experimental system will allow teams to challenge ball and strike calls using automated pitch tracking technology, similar to systems used in Major League Baseball. Each team will receive three challenges per game. If a challenge is successful, the team retains it; if the call is upheld, the challenge is lost. The system will debut at the 2026 SEC Baseball Tournament, scheduled for May 19-24. The NCAA said other conferences could adopt the system for their tournaments if they follow the same guidelines.

— Two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal will undergo surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow after being scratched from Monday’s start against the Boston Red Sox, the Detroit Tigers announced. Skubal felt elbow discomfort Sunday, less than a week after a prior injury scare. Tests revealed the issue, though the surgery has not yet been scheduled. There is no official timetable for his return, but recovery from similar procedures is typically two to three months. The left-hander is 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in seven starts this season, with 45 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings. He is set to become a free agent after next season.
— Pinch-hitter Michael Conforto capped a two-run ninth inning with a solo homer as the Chicago Cubs rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 for their sixth straight victory. Chicago improved to 23-12 with their 16th win in 19 games. The Cubs have won 12 in a row at home.
— J.P. Crawford hit a go-ahead homer to cap a five-run sixth inning as the Seattle Mariners rallied from four down to defeat the Atlanta Braves 5-4. Braves 1B Matt Olson hit his 300th home run, making him the 166th player to reach the milestone.
— Michael Wacha needed only 79 pitches to get through seven innings as Bobby Witt Jr. homered to spark a four-run fourth as the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-2.
— Aaron Judge put New York ahead in the first inning with his 14th home run as part of a four-RBI night as the Yankees routed the Baltimore Orioles 12-1 for a four-game sweep and their 14th win in 16 games.
— Munetaka Murakami hit his 14th homer of the season as the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-0. Murakami is now tied with Aaron Judge for the major league lead in home runs. Davis Martin allowed five hits in seven shutout innings, with 10 strikeouts. He improved to 5-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.64.
— Payton Tolle pitched seven innings of two-run ball, while Jarren Duran hit a three-run home run as the Boston Red Sox used a five-run seventh inning to beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4.
— Kyle Tucker homered and drove in two runs against his former team to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 8-3 win over the Houston Astros.
— Bryce Harper had a homer, double and single, while Aaron Nola worked six shutout innings as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 1-0. The Phillies improved to 6-1 under interim manager Don Mattingly.
— Trevor McDonald pitched seven innings in his season debut as the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 3-2. McDonald, called up from Triple-A earlier in the day, matched his career-high of seven innings and allowed one run and two hits with eight strikeouts.
— Carson Benge homered leading off the sixth inning for New York’s first hit against Tomoyuki Sugano as the Mets beat the Colorado Rockies 4-2 in a game moved up three hours to avoid potential wet weather. Colorado has dropped five straight, and six of seven.
— Kyle Leahy pitched 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball and Iván Herrera drove in three runs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3.
— Ryan Vilade hit a three-run homer in the first inning, as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1. Tampa Bay has won four straight games and 10 of its last 11.
