MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels girls golf won the SF Washington Invite on Monday with a team score of 306, while Maddie Childs finished first overall shooting a -2 (70). Childs finished with six birdies on the day at Prairie Green Golf Course. Aberdeen Central finished in second place, 13 shots back. Mitchell competes at the Huron Invite on Thursday at Broadland Creek Golf Course starting at 10 am.

— Mitchell Kernels boys tennis swept a home quadrangular at Hitchcock Park on Monday defeating Pierre and Vermillion 9-0, and Yankton 5-4. Mitchell improves to 13-5 on the season in duals and will be in Harrisburg today to face the Tigers and SF Roosevelt at 11 am.

— Mitchell baseball enters the final week of the regular season with six games remaining and three doubleheaders. It starts on Tuesday at 5 pm when Mitchell hosts SF Washington for two games. The pregame show starts at 4:45 pm on KORN News Radio FM 101.3/AM 1490 and KORNRadio.com. Mitchell is currently the No. 8 seed in Class A baseball with the top eight seeds hosting a best two-out-of-series playoff series next Friday and Saturday to qualify for the state tournament in Sioux Falls.

— Mitchell Kernels softball travels to face Rapid City Stevens on Friday at 2:30 pm CST, followed by two games on Saturday vs. Sturgis at 11:30 am CST and at Spearfish at 3 pm CST.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State’s Tayler Baker was named the Summit League Softball Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Baker was 2-0 over the weekend at North Dakota, allowing just two earned runs, five hits and 16 strikeouts over the two games.

— South Dakota State shortstop Carter Sintek was named the Summit League Baseball Hitter of the Week after putting up big numbers in the Jackrabbits’ series win over Northern Colorado. Sintek had three hits in each of the three games, posting a .643 batting average by going 9-for-14 with three RBI and six runs scored.

— South Dakota State softball faces the winner between USD and Kansas City in the Summit League Tournament. First pitch is at 1:30 pm in Brookings.

— South Dakota State baseball starts a three-game series at Omaha on Friday at 6 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD softball will face No. 6 seed Kansas City on Wednesday at 3:30 pm in Brookings in the first round of the Summit League Tournament.

MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL CONFERENCE
— The Missouri Valley Football Conference has approved a new governance structure that enhances its partnership with multi-sport conferences like the Summit League. This change comes as part of preparations for the retirement of Missouri Valley Commissioner Patty Viverito, who has held the role for 40 years. Jeff Jackson will take over as Missouri Valley Commissioner on July 1. Josh Fenton, Summit League Commissioner, will serve as the Executive Advisor for the MVFC.

MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Minnesota Twins start a three game home series vs. the Baltimore Orioles tonight at 6:40 pm. The Twins took two of three game in Boston this past weekend over the Red Sox.

 NBA
— Nikola Jokic had 42 points and 22 rebounds, and Aaron Gordon hit a 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds to give the Denver Nuggets a 121-119 comeback win over the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinals series. Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 33 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for the Thunder, who hadn’t played in more than a week after sweeping the Memphis Grizzlies.

— Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby each scored 29 points before Mikal Bridges stole the ball from Jaylen Brown with a second left in overtime as the New York Knicks stunned the Boston Celtics 108-105 in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinals series on Monday night. New York lost all four games against Boston during the regular season and trailed by 20 points in the second half. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown both had 23 points for the Celtics, who had an NBA playoff-record 45 missed 3-pointers.

— Cleveland’s Kenny Atkinson was named the NBA Coach of the Year on Monday as he led Cleveland to a 15-0 start to the season, one of three winning streaks of at least 12 games this season this season, and led the Cavaliers to the best record in the Eastern Conference.

NFL
— The Baltimore Ravens announced Monday they’ve decided to release longtime kicker Justin Tucker, months after reports that he was accused of inappropriate sexual behavior by massage therapists. A five-time All-Pro, the 35-year-old Tucker has played his entire 13-year career with Baltimore. He’s considered one of the best kickers in NFL history, although 2024 was his worst season.

— Cleveland Browns linebacker Devin Bush was charged with harassment and misdemeanor simple assault over the weekend after allegedly chasing a woman through his house in suburban Pittsburgh and smashing her cellphone. Officers said they responded to a 911 call on Sunday from the home, where a woman identified only as Bush’s girlfriend alleged he assaulted her, took her car keys and broke the phone to prevent her from calling for help. Bush is a former first-round draft pick who spent four seasons with Pittsburgh and one in Seattle before signing with the Browns last year.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Michigan is expected to suspend head football coach Sherrone Moore for two games next season to address allegations that he failed to cooperate in the NCAA’s sign-stealing investigation during the 2023 season. Moore is expected to miss Michigan’s third and fourth games, home against Central Michigan on Sept. 13 and at Nebraska a week later, and all athletic-related duties during those weeks.

MLB
— AJ Smith-Shawver took a no-hitter into the eighth inning as the Atlanta Braves beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-0. Santiago Espinal led off the eighth with a single to center field for Cincinnati’s only hit. Atlanta’s Matt Olson drove in two runs with an inside-the-park homer in the third.

— Bobby Witt Jr. scored the first run and drove in the second to back five shutout innings and 11 strikeouts from Cole Ragans as Kansas City stayed hot with a 3-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. The Royals have won three straight and 11 of 13.

— Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman homered as the Dodgers defeated the Miami Marlins 7-4.

— Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Houston Astros 5-1. Milwaukee broke a scoreless tie by getting three runs in the third inning.

— Ian Happ homered and drove in three runs, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 9-2. Carson Kelly also went deep, sparking Chicago’s five-run sixth inning.

— Willson Contreras hit a go-ahead home run in a four-run sixth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3.

— Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer and Pete Alonso launched a two-run shot as the New York Mets held on late to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4.

— San Diego’s Manny Machado hit a two-run double and Xander Bogaerts followed with a two-run single in an eighth-inning comeback as the Padres rallied past the New York Yankees 4-3 for their sixth straight win.

— Jacob Wilson singled home the winning run in the 11th inning to give the Athletics a 7-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
