MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell senior setter Addie Siemsen has been named to the All ESD volleyball team, while senior outside hitter Audrey Miller earned honorable mention recognition for the Kernels. Siemsen has been a steady force for a Mitchell team that finished the regular season 15-8 and enters the postseason as the No. 8 seed in the SoDAK 16. Siemsen leads the Kernels with 543 assists this fall and surpassed the 1,000-career assist milestone earlier this season in a road match at SF Roosevelt. Siemsen ranks second on the team with 170 kills, 46 aces, 70 blocks, and 231 digs.  Joining Siemsen on the ESD honors list, Miller earned honorable mention after leading the Kernels with 198 kills this season.

— A trip to the Class AA state volleyball tournament is on the line Thursday night when the No. 8 seed Mitchell Kernels host the No. 9 seed Spearfish Spartans in the SoDAK 16. The winner advances to the Class AA State Volleyball Tournament, set for November 20–22 in Rapid City. Mitchell enters the postseason at 15-8, its best record since 2018 — the same year the Kernels last qualified for state. They’ll look to replicate their performance from October 4, when they swept Spearfish 3-0 on the road. Since 2007, Mitchell has dominated the series, winning 20 of 24 matchups against the Spartans. Match time is to be determined.

Iowa was ranked 21st in the most recent Coaches Top 25 Rankings.

MLB
— Major League Baseball said its authorized gaming operators will cap bets on individual pitches at $200 and exclude them from parlays, a day after two Cleveland Guardians were indicted and accused of rigging pitches at the behest of gamblers. MLB said Monday the limits were agreed to by sportsbook operators representing more than 98% of the U.S. betting market. The league said in a statement that pitch-level bets on outcomes of pitch velocity and of balls and strikes “present heightened integrity risks because they focus on one-off events that can be determined by a single player and can be inconsequential to the outcome of the game.”

— Athletics slugger Nick Kurtz is a unanimous choice for American League Rookie of the Year, and Atlanta Braves catcher Drake Baldwin is the winner of the National League honor. The 22-year-old Kurtz hit .290 with 36 homers and 86 RBIs in 117 games this year. The 24-year-old Baldwin hit .274 with 19 homers and 80 RBIs in 124 games for Atlanta.

NFL
— Jalen Hurts threw a 36-yard pass to DeVonta Smith for Philadelphia’s only touchdown as the Eagles’ defense led the way to a 10-7 win over the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. Brandon McManus’ attempt at a game-tying, 64-yard field goal as time expired fell several yards short. Green Bay’s second straight loss dropped the Packers to third place in the NFC North with a 5-3 record.

— The New York Giants have fired coach Brian Daboll. The move was made a day after the Giants blew a late lead and lost 24-20 against the Chicago Bears to fall to 2-8 on the season. New York has lost four in a row since upsetting defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia at home in prime time. Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was named as the interim coach.

— Joe Burrow has returned to practice with the Cincinnati Bengals. His appearance on Monday opened the 21-day window for him to return to the lineup. Burrow is eligible to be activated during the three-week window. However, coach Zac Taylor says Burrow won’t return for Sunday’s game at Pittsburgh. The Bengals have lost six of seven since Burrow suffered a toe injury in mid-September that required surgery.

— Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton recently underwent surgery for testicular cancer. He played against the Raiders just four days after learning of his diagnosis. He will miss the upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs but hopes to return soon.
