His kickoff return for TD was the first by a Jackrabbit since 2017. For the game, Johnson had 114 yards on two kickoffs and added 42 rushing yards on three carries en route to a single-game career-high 156 all-purpose yards.

— South Dakota State center Gus Miller received Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week honors after anchoring a Jackrabbit unit that paved the way for numerous season highs in a Hobo Day victory last week. A senior from Brookings, Miller graded at 90 percent and recorded five pancake blocks as SDSU rushed for 404 yards in a 63-13 victory over Youngstown State on Oct. 12. The Jackrabbits totaled 557 yards of offense and allowed only one tackle for loss in the game en route to averages of 16 yards per rush and 13 yards per play.

— Next Saturday’s Interstate Series football game between SDSU and USD will be played under the lights at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Officials from the Missouri Valley Football Conference and ESPN announced Monday that kickoff for the in-state rivalry game has been set for 6:30 p.m., with the game televised before a national audience on ESPNU. Both team enter the week ranked in the top five of the two major Football Championship Subdivision polls.

MLB
— Juan Soto homered during New York’s three-run third inning, while Carlos Rodón got his first postseason win as the Yankees took advantage of Cleveland’s wildness in a 5-2 victory in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series. Cleveland became only the second team to throw a pair of run-scoring wild pitches in a postseason inning and tied a playoff record with five wild pitches overall. Guardians pitchers walked six in a nine-batter span and nine overall. Giancarlo Stanton added his 13th career playoff homer for the Yankees.

— Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos homered as the New York Mets ended the Dodgers record-tying playoff scoreless streak in a 7-3 victory, tying the NL Championship Series at a game apiece. Lindor hit a leadoff homer in the first inning, while Viento hit a grand slam during New York’s five-run second inning. Before Lindor went deep, Los Angeles had a string of 33 consecutive scoreless innings. Game three is Wednesday night in New York.

MLB PLAYOFFS – AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians, Game 2 on Tuesday, 6:30 pm on TBS

NFL
— Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills overcame a Hail Mary touchdown by Aaron Rodgers as the first half ended to beat the New York Jets 23-20 and take control of the AFC East. Allen threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score and Tyler Bass made up for an earlier miss by kicking a go-ahead 22-yard field goal with 3:43 left to help the Bills snap a two-game losing streak. The loss was the third in a row for the Jets.

— After suffering the worst home loss of his time as Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager, 47-9 to Detroit on Sunday, Jerry Jones supported his head coach, Mike McCarthy. When reminded about the previous in-season coaching change he made in 2010 when he fired Wade Phillips and named Jason Garrett as interim coach after a 1-7 start, Jones became terse. McCarthy is in the final year of his contract. Despite his posting three straight 12-5 finishes, the Cowboys’ lack of playoff success put McCarthy’s future in question entering the season. Dallas hasn’t advanced beyond the divisional round of the playoffs and has lost two playoff games at home since he was hired in 2020. The Cowboys are 3-3 after the loss to the Lions, heading into their bye week.

— Detroit Lions star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson underwent successful surgery Sunday night at a Dallas-area hospital to repair his fractured tibia and fibula in his leg. Hutchinson will return to Detroit this week and is expected to make a full recovery. Hutchinson’s season is over, as his injury typically carries a recovery of six to eight months. A rod was placed in Hutchinson’s leg during the surgery.

— Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said he expects quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to play again this season, although he didn’t have an exact date for his return. Tua has spent the past four weeks on injured reserve with a concussion he suffered on Sept. 12 and isn’t eligible to return until the Dolphins’ game against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 8. McDaniel did not commit to Tua returning when he’s eligible next week, but for the first time since his injury, he did offer some optimism into the quarterback playing again this season.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

— Kansas is No. 1 in the AP Top 25 preseason men’s basketball poll ahead of Alabama and two-time defending national champion UConn. The Jayhawks got 30 of 60 first-place votes while Alabama received 14 and UConn got 11. Houston and Iowa State round out the top five, followed by Gonzaga, Duke, Baylor, North Carolina and Arizona. The Big 12 has half of the top 10 teams but the SEC has the most in the Top 25 overall with nine.

NBA
— Philadelphia 76ers prized free agent acquisition Paul George left Monday’s preseason game against Atlanta with a hyperextended left knee. There was no immediate update how much time George might miss following his injury. A nine-time All-Star, George’s knee buckled on a defensive play in the second quarter. The Sixers have been cautious with their star players and shut down All-Center Joel Embiid on Sunday for the rest of the preseason for what the team called left knee management.
