After losing the first set 16-25, SDSU rallied to win the next three sets 25-20, 25-20, and 25-18. SOUTH DAKOTA

— USD volleyball secured a five-set victory over North Dakota State on Saturday, led by Lauren Medeck 18 kills. Kamryn Farris recorded 21 digs, just one shy of 1,000 career digs, while setter Avery Van Hook had her fourth straight double-double with 48 assists and 10 digs. The Coyotes dominated the first two sets, winning 25-17 and 25-13, but NDSU responded by taking the third (27-25) and fourth sets (25-23). In the decisive fifth set, the Coyotes overcame an 8-5 deficit with a 7-0 run to win 15-12.

— USD women’s soccer lost at North Dakota State on Sunday 4-2 to fall to 3-7-5 on the season. The Coyotes host Oral Roberts on Thursday at 6 pm in Vermillion.

MLB
— Resale tickets for the World Series opener at Dodger Stadium against the New York Yankees started at $1,358 on Monday night on StubHub. Sales for Games 3-5 in New York are 40% higher than for Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 in Los Angeles. Vivid Seats, another resale outlet, said its average price of tickets sold for this year’s Series was $1,368, about double the $685 last year for the Texas Rangers-Arizona Diamondbacks matchup.

WNBA
— The WNBA players union has decided to opt out of the current collective bargaining agreement, two years before its expiration. The league and players union had the option to do so before Nov. 1. The early opt-out marks a crucial juncture for the league. The WNBA signed a historic 11-year media rights deal worth $200 million a year. The league had record attendance and viewership this year that culminated in the WNBA Finals that saw New York beat Minnesota in overtime on Sunday in a decisive fifth game. The current CBA will still cover the 2025 season so the two sides have a year to negotiate a new agreement.

NFL
— Lamar Jackson threw for 281 yards and five touchdowns, helping the Baltimore Ravens overcome an early double-digit deficit and extend their winning streak to five games with a 41-31 victory Monday night over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs lost their top two receivers, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, to injuries. Godwin suffered an ankle injury that appeared to be severe in the final minutes with the game out of reach. Jackson improved to 23-1 against NFC teams, the best mark by a quarterback against an opposing conference in NFL history.

— Kyler Murray ran for a 44-yard touchdown and led the Cardinals on a drive that set up Chad Ryland’s 32-yard field goal as time expired, as Arizona rallied for a 17-15 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Cameron Dicker kicked five field goals for the Chargers, and his 40-yarder gave the Chargers a 15-14 lead with 1:54 left. But the Cardinals quickly moved into field goal range, aided by an unnecessary roughness penalty. James Conner’s 33-yard run eventually set up Ryland’s short field goal. The Chargers gained 395 yards but couldn’t find the end zone.

— Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa spoke publicly for the first time on Monday since being diagnosed with his third NFL concussion. He expressed frustration about being sidelined for the past four games and dealing with ongoing questions about his health, stating he doesn’t want to be defined by traumatic brain injuries but acknowledges the reality of the situation. Tua, who has a history of head injuries, was cleared by medical experts to return to football after meeting with several specialists. He still needs to be cleared from the NFL’s concussion protocol but is expected to start against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday if everything goes well in practice.

— Less than 24 hours after wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk injured his right knee against the Kansas City Chiefs, the San Francisco 49ers got the bad news they were expecting. Aiyuk tore the ACL and MCL ligaments in his right knee, which will require surgery and end his 2024 season after just seven games. What’s more, the illness that limited wideout Deebo Samuel to four snaps against the Chiefs is technically a form of pneumonia. Samuel has some fluid buildup in his lungs and remains in a local hospital after checking in Sunday night.

— Deshaun Watson won’t finish the season as Cleveland’s starting quarterback for the second straight year. Watson ruptured his right Achilles tendon in the first half of Sunday’s loss to Cincinnati. His collapse triggered some Browns fans to cheer as he laid on the ground. The team says an MRI confirmed the rupture. The Browns said Watson will have surgery and that he is expected to make a full recovery. It’s his second significant injury in two seasons. He broke a bone in his throwing shoulder last year. The Browns signed Watson to a $230 million contract in 2022 as he dealt with accusations of sexual assault brought by two dozen women in Texas.

NBA
— Denver Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon agreed to a four-year, $133 million contract extension. Gordon averaged 13.9 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 55% from the field last season. After spending the first 6½ years of his career in Orlando, Gordon was acquired by the Nuggets at the 2021 trade deadline.

— Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun has agreed on a five-year, $185 million rookie extension. The 22-year-old Sengun blossomed into an All-Star candidate last season and earned a third-place finish in Most Improved Player voting, by averaging 21.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5 assists per game for Houston.

— Jalen Suggs has signed a five-year contract extension with the Orlando Magic worth an average of about $30 million per season. Suggs is coming off a breakout year averaging 12.6 points and shooting nearly 40% from 3-point range last season, on his way to earning a second-team All-Defense honors and being tied for 10th in defensive player of the year voting.

— The Atlanta Hawks and Jalen Johnson agreed to a rookie contract extension on Monday for $150 million and five years. Johnson, the No. 20 overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft, emerged as a prominent scorer and rebounder last season. He set career highs with his averages of 16 points and 8.7 rebounds.

NBA
— If LeBron James and his son, Bronny, make NBA history Tuesday night by playing in the same game for the Los Angeles Lakers, Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. will be there to witness it. The first father-son duo to play in Major League Baseball plans to be in attendance at the Lakers’ season opener.

Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks, 6:30 pm on TNT
Los Angeles Lakers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves, 9 pm on TNT

NFL
The bumpy start to Jameson Williams’ career continues, as the Detroit Lions wide receiver is facing a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy. The 23-year-old Williams has the team’s second-most receiving yards (361) and touchdowns (3), behind All-Pro wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown. As the No. 12 pick out of Alabama in the 2022 draft, Williams missed the first 11 games of his rookie season because of an ACL injury he suffered in college, then was suspended four games for violating the NFL’s gambling policy in his second season
