MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball hosts Huron tonight at 7 pm at the high school gym. The Kernels have won eight of their past nine matches, but have lost 10 of their past 11 meetings with Huron. Mitchell is currently seventh in Class AA seed points with four matches left in the regular season.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball picked up a five-set win over No. 24 ranked Dakota State on Monday night during Senior night. The Tigers won 25-12, 25-12, 23-25, 22-25, 15-8 to improve 15-10 on the season. Evy Knoblock had a team-high 21 kills on 66 attempts, while freshman Madisyn Grimsrud added 15 kills. Setter Kayleigh Hybertson had a season-high 55 assists, while Lizzie Tyler led the defense with 37 digs. DWU will be on the road for their final two matches for the regular season starting on Wednesday at Dordt at 7:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan quarterback Jed Jedson was named the GPAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after throwing for five touchdowns in a 33-14 homecoming win on Saturday vs. Waldorf. Jenson is the first Dakota Wesleyan quarterback to be named conference player-of-the-week since Shaye Slaughter in 2018.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball starts its season tonight at the Corn Palace when they host Grand View at 6 pm. The Tigers start their second season under head coach Sam Nicholson. Nicholson finished 20-10 during his first season. DWU was picked to finished seventh in the GPAC out of 11 teams in the conference preseason poll.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer ends the regular season vs. Morningside on Wednesday at 5 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer ends the regular season vs. Morningside on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— Kickoff for the Nov. 8 football game between South Dakota State and USD has been set for 3 p.m., officials from the Missouri Valley Football Conference and ESPN announced Monday. The game, which will be played at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, will be televised nationally for the second year in a row on ESPNU. SDSU enters the week 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Jackrabbits, who host Indiana State on Saturday, are tied for fourth in this week’s top 25 media poll and fifth in the coaches’ rankings. USD holds a 5-4 overall record and a 3-2 mark in league play ahead of Saturday’s home game against North Dakota.
— South Dakota State football hosts Indiana State on Saturday at 1 pm.
— South Dakota State volleyball will be at Omaha on Thursday at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer will be the No. 3 seed in the Summit League Tournament that starts this weekend at home sites. SDSU hosts No. 6 Omaha on Saturday at 5 pm.

— Freddie Freeman homered leading off the bottom of the 18th inning and Shohei Ohtani went deep twice as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 in 18 innings to take a 2-1 series lead. Freeman connected off left-hander Brendon Little to finally end a game that lasted 6 hours, 39 minutes, and matched the longest game by innings in playoff history. Shohei Ohtani homered twice and tied a 119-year-old major league record with four extra-base hits in Game 3 of the World Series. Ohtani drew five consecutive walks becoming the first major leaguer in 83 years to reach base nine times in any game. Game 4 of the World Series is tonight in L.A. at 7 pm on FOX.
— The Baltimore Orioles have hired Craig Albernaz as their manager. Albernaz, who turns 43 on Thursday, was previously an associate manager with the Cleveland Guardians. He was promoted to that role after serving as bench coach in 2024. Albernaz takes over a young Baltimore team that still has plenty of potential despite sliding to 75 wins this year and a last-place finish in the AL East. The Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde in May.

— Patrick Mahomes threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Washington Commanders 28-7 on Monday night. Kareem Hunt found the end zone twice for Kansas City. One of Mahomes’ TD passes was to Travis Kelce, giving him 83 scores to tie Priest Holmes for the Chiefs career record. The Chiefs have won four of five to move to 5-3. The Commanders fell to 1-4 on the road and 3-5 overall.
— Former NFL running back Adrian Peterson remained jailed on Monday after being arrested a day earlier in a Houston suburb on charges of driving while intoxicated and unlawfully carrying a weapon. Peterson was taken into custody Sunday morning. It’s the second DWI arrest in seven months.
— Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is expected to return from a right hamstring injury and start Thursday night’s game at the Miami Dolphins. Jackson has been sidelined the past three games, including Sunday’s 30-16 win over the Chicago Bears.
— Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II is expected to miss multiple games with a left pectoral strain and could be a candidate for injured reserve. Surtain was injured while making a tackle with 22 seconds left in the first half of Sunday’s home win over the Dallas Cowboys when his left arm and shoulder twisted awkwardly. Surtain will not play Sunday against the Texans in Houston. The Broncos will approach Surtain’s status on a “week-to-week” basis but believe he will miss multiple games.

— The NBA has started a review to protect the integrity of the game, players, and coaches following the arrests of Miami guard Terry Rozier and Portland head coach Chauncey Billups. They were allegedly involved in gambling schemes. The league sent a memo to all teams, highlighting the need to reassess sports betting regulations. Nearly three dozen people, including Rozier and Billups, were arrested last week. The NBA is focusing on injury reports, which can be exploited by bettors. The league seeks to ensure players and coaches understand the risks of gambling and is seeking input from teams on how to proceed.
— Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will miss at least one week with a strained right hamstring after he was sidelined by the injury in the opening minutes on Sunday night. Edwards underwent an MRI exam on Monday that revealed the strain, after he was removed a little more than 3 minutes into Minnesota’s 114-110 win over Indiana. Edwards will miss at least three games, including the start of a three-game road trip at Charlotte on Saturday.
— Jamal Murray scored 23 of his 43 points in the third quarter and Nikola Jokic had another triple-double as the Denver Nuggets beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 127-114. Jokic finished with 25 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists for his third triple-double in three games this season. He now has 167 career triple-doubles, third on the NBA’s all-time list.
— Isaiah Hartenstein had 16 points and 12 points and scored Oklahoma City’s only two field goals of the final 8:28, as the Thunder withstood a late Dallas rally to beat the Mavericks 101-94 to improve to 4-0. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 23 points to lead the Thunder. Anthony Davis had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Mavericks, playing their fourth straight home game to open the season.
— Victor Wembanyama had 24 points and 15 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs remained unbeaten with a 121-103 victory over the Toronto Raptors. San Antonio is 4-0 for the first time since 2017.
— Utah’s Lauri Markkanen scored a career-high 51 in a 138-134 win over the Phoenix Suns. He becomes the first Jazz player to have a 50 point game since Karl Malone in 1998.
— The Portland Trail Blazers pulled away from the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers 122-108 despite 41 points from the Lakers’ Austin Reaves.
— Anfernee Simons made six 3-pointers and scored 25 points as the Boston Celtics earned their first victory over the season by pulling away to beat the New Orleans Pelicans 122-90. The Celtics outscored the Pelicans 31-4 in the final 9:14 after they led by just five.
— Donovan Mitchell scored 35 points in just 29 minutes as the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Detroit Pistons 116-95 for their third straight victory.
— Tari Eason scored 22 points and Alperen Sengun added 21 points, six rebounds and six assists as the Houston Rockets beat the Brooklyn Nets 137-109 for their first win of the season.
